HENRY MELVIN HART, JR. Professor of Law After receiving his S.,I.D. degree in 1931, Professor Hart served for a year as secretary to Mr. Justice Brandeis, returning in 1932 as a member of the Harvard Law Faculty. In the year 1937-38 he was on leave of absence to act as attorney in the office of the Solicitor General, in 1940-41 he was special assistant to the Attorney General attached to the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Professor Hart was Associate General Counsel for Price in the O.P.A. from 1942 to 1945 and General Counsel in the Office of Economic Stabilization in 1945-46. He is the author of numerous articles in the field of public law and is now teaching Federal Jurisdiction and Legis- lation. He also holds a seminar in Legislation. Born: 1904 in Butte, Montana. A.B., 1926, LL.B., 1930, S.,I.D., 1931, Harvard. MARK DeWOLFE HOWE Professor of Law From 1933 to 1934 Professor Howe was secretary to Mr. justice Holmes, and then entered practice in Boston. He was with the Law School of the University of Buffalo from 1937 to 1943, first as professor and later as Dean. Professor Howe served as Colonel in World War II with the American Military Government and with the Civil Aifairs Division of the War Department. Upon his discharge in 1945, he returned to Harvard. He was editor of the Holmes-Pollack Lriirrs 119411 and Touched with Fire 09461. He teaches Admiralty, American Legal History, and Con- stitutional Law. Born: 1906 in Boston, Massachusetts. A.B., 1928, LL.B., 1933, Harvard. BENJAMIN KAPLAN Professor of Law Professor Kaplan practiced law in New York from 1933 to 1942, engaging chiefly in Appellate Court cases. He entered the Army in 1942 and in 1945 joined the office of the Assistant Secretary of War for duty with Mr. Justice Jackson, United States Chief of Counsel for the Prosecution of Axis Criminality. He joined the Harvard Law School Faculty in the spring of 1947 and was appointed Professor early in 1948. Professor Kaplan is now teaching Procedure and Contracts. Born: 1911 in New York, New York. Professor Freund now teaches Constitutional Law and a seminar in PAUL ABRAHAM FREUND Professor of Law Professor Freund began his legal career as secretary to Mr. justice Brandeis for the 1932-33 term. For the next two years he was a member of the legal staffs of the Treasury Department and of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. For the next four years his work was in the offices of the Solicitor General of the United States and as special assistant to the Attorney General. He returned to Harvard in 1939 as a lecturer and was appointed Professor in 1940. From 1942 to 1946 he was on leave with the Department of Justice. He is the author of the recently published On Understanding the Suprenze Court f1949j. Constitutional Litigation. GEORGE KNOWLES GARDNER Professor of Law Professor Gardner began the practice of law in Boston in 1914 and remained actively occupied in the profession for a period of fourteen years. From 1921 until 1928 he served as an Instructor in Law at Northeastern University, becoming a member of the Harvard Law Faculty in the latter year. From 1942 to October, 1946, Professor Gardner practiced law in Boston and acted as Assistant Treasurer and Secretary of Taunton Coating Mills, Inc., of Taunton, Mass. He is the editor of Cases and Materials on Contracts and author of several articles in legal periodicals. This year he is on leave from the Law School. Born: 1891 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Born: 1908 in St. Louis Missouri LL.B., 1931, S.J.D., 1932 Harvard l Page twenty-four SHELDON GLUECK Professor of Criminology Professor Glueck came to the Law Faculty in 1929 after several years' teaching in the Social Ethics Department at Harvard. He has been Adviser to the American Law Institute in the drafting of the Youth Correction Authority Act, member of the U. S. Supreme Court's Advisory Committee on Rules of Criminal Procedure, and United States Delegate to the International Prison Congress in Prague. Professor Glueck has published many research works done with the collaboration of Mrs. Glueck QDr. Eleanor T. Glueckj, including 500 Criminal Careers, 1000 juvenile Delinquents, 500 Delinquent Women, Later Criminal Careers and others. Some of his other works are Crime and justice QLoWell Lecturesj, War Criminals: Their Prosecution and Punishment, and The Nuremberg Trial and Aggressive War. He teaches Criminal Law and Criminology. WALTER BARTON LEACH Professor of Law After graduation from Harvard, Professor Leach served as secretary to Mr. Justice Holmes for the year 1924-25. Returning to Boston in 1925 he combined private practice with teaching in Northeastern Uni- versity's Law School. In 1929 he joined the Harvard Law School faculty. Professor Leach is the author of several articles on Perpetuities. He acted as an adviser on the Restatement of Property and Reporter for the part dealing with Powers of Appointment. He is the editor of case- books on Future Interests, on Wills, and on Hrst year Property. An infantry private in 1918, Professor Leach served in World War II as a Colonel in the Air Corps. Since his return he has taught Property I and Property II. Born: 1900 in Boston, Massachusetts. A.B., 1921, LL.B., 1924, Harvard. JAMES ANGELL MacLACHLAN 1 1 Professor of Law j Professor MacLachlan began the practice of law in Chicago in 1916. N From 1917 to 1919 he served as captain in the Field Artillery. On receiving his discharge he resumed his Chicago practice and in 1924 , joined the Harvard Law School faculty. The author of several law review articles, Professor MacLachlan edited Cases on Federal Anti-Trust Laws, and his Casebook on Creditors' Rights and Statutory Supplement have been completely revised in the 1949 edition. During World War II he served in Washington, D. C., as special counsel for the OPA, Assistant Solicitor of the XVar Relo- cation Authority, and Contract Renegotiator for the U. S. Maritime Commission. He is at present a member of the Council of the Atlantic Union Committee. Professor Maetaehlan is teaching Creditors' Rights, Mortgages and Suretyship. Born: 1891 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. A.B., 1912, University of Michigan, LL.B., 1916, Harvard. JOHN MacARTHUR MAGUIRE Professor of Law Professor Maguire joined the Harvard Law School Faculty in 1923 after twelve years of practice in Boston. During YX'orld War I he was a member of the War Emergency Division of the Department of Justiceg in 1938 and again in 1943 he was consulting expert for the United States Treasury Department. Professor Maguire was vice-chairman of the American Bar Asso- ciation Committee on Jurisdiction and Law Reform. He is at present one of the Special Consultants on the Income Tax Project of the American Law Institute. He is co-editor with Professor Morgan of a casebook on Evidence and co-editor with Professor Magill CColumbiaj of Cases on Taxation.
