A native son, President Conant was born in Dorchester in 1893. He specialized in chemistry at Harvard College, graduating in three years with high honors in 1913. Re- ceiving his Ph.D. in 1916, he served as In- structor in Chemistry until 1917. During World W' ar I he Worked with the govern- ment, and later was commissioned a Major in the Chemical Warfare Service. Returning to Harvard in 1919 as an Assistant Professor, he became an Associate Professor in 1925, a Professor in 1927, and in 1929 Sheldon Emery Professor of Organic Chemistry. In June, 1933, he was elected President of Harvard University. War ser- vice called him again in 1940 and until 1946 he was Chairman of the National Defense Page sixteen JAMES BRYANT CONANT President of Harvard University Research Committee. He became a mem- ber of the General Advisory Committee to the United States Atomic Energy Commis- sion in 1946. Among President Conant's other honors, he is an honorary fellow of Emmanuel Col- lege, Cambridge, a member of the Ameri- can Chemical Society, the American Acad- emy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, the Massachusetts Historical Society, the American Philosoph- ical Society, and the Royal Society of Edin- burgh and England. He is one of the out- standing authorities, and in the last year has published a new book on education, Educa- tion in a Divided World.

ERWIN N ATHANIEL GRISWOLD Dean and Charles Stebbens Fairchild Professor of Law Born in East Cleveland, Ohio, in 1904, Dean Griswold received both an A.B. and an A.M. degree from Oberlin College in 1925. At Harvard Law School he compiled one of the highest averages ever attained and served as President of the Law Review. He was graduated in 1928 and was awarded an S.J.D. in 1929. After practicing in Cleveland, Dean Gris- wold served as an attorney in the Office of the Solicitor General of the United States and as Special Assistant to the Attorney General from 1929 until 1934 when he was appointed to the Harvard Law School Fac- ulty, becoming Dean in 1946. Dean Griswold teaches Federal Taxation and has taught Trusts, Conflict of Laws and Administrative Law. He is highly rec- ognized in these fields, having written two editions of Spendtbrift Trusts and various articles. He compiled Cases on Federal Taxation and co-edited Cases on Conflict of Laws. In 1942 he was consulting expert to the Treasury Department and he has been an adviser to the Rcstatemcnts of Trusts, Restitution, and judge-ments. Page seventeen
