JAMES BRYANT CONANT President of liar-vrzrzl U zziivzfrsity NATIVE son, President Conant was born in Dorchester in 1893. In 1913 he was graduated from Harvard College. Receiving his Ph.D. in 1916 he served as an Instructor in Chemistry until 1917. In that year he served as a lieutenant in the Army Sanitary Corps and in 1918 he was promoted to major in the Chemical VVarfare Service. Returning to Harvard in 1919 as an Assistant Professor he became an Associate Professor in 1925, a Professor in 1927, and in 1929 Sheldon lfmery Professor of Organic Chemistry. In June 1933 he was elected President of Harvard University. VVar service called him again in 19-11 and until 1946 he was Chairman of the Na- tional Defense Research Committee. In 1946 President Conant became a member of the General Advisory Committee to the United States Atomic lfnergy Commission. Among President- Conant's other honors, he is a member of the board of scientific directors of the Rockefeller Institute, an honorary fellow of lfmmanuel College, Cam- bridge, a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, the Imperial Academy of Science CHallej, the Royal Society flinglandj, and the Royal Society of lidinburgh fling- landl. He is also the author of many important volumes oi Organic Chemistry, a field in which he is one of the outstanding authorities. 17

I .-- ., .Li ERWIN NATHANIEI, GRIswoLD Dean and Charles Stebbins Faircliilzl Professor of Law ORN in East Cleveland, Ohio, in 1904, Dean Griswold received both an A.B. and an A.M. degree from Oberlin College in 1925. At Harvard Law School he compiled one of the highest averages ever attained and served as President of the Law Review. He was graduated in 1928 and was awarded an S.J.D. in 1929. After practicing in Cleveland, Dean Griswold served as an attorney in the Oflice of the Solicitor General of the United States and as Special Assistant to the Attorney General from 1929 until 1934 when he was appointed to the Harvard Law School Faculty, becoming Dean in 19-16. Dean Griswold teaches Federal Taxation and has taught Trusts, Conflict of Laws and Administrative Law. He is highly recognized in these fields having written two editions of Spendthrift Trusts and various articles. He compiled Cases on Federal Taxation and co-edited Cases on Conflict of Laws. In 1942 he was consulting expert to the Treasury Department and he has been an advisor to the Restatements of Trusts, Restitution, and Judgments. 18
