ERWIN NATHANIEL Gklswow Dean and Charles Stebbins Fairchild Professor of Law EAN GR1SlX7OLD was born in 1904 111 East Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Oberlin College, receiving both an A.B. and A.lVl. in 1925, and went on to Harvard Law School where he became President of the Law Review. He was graduated in 1928 and was awarded an S.,l.D. the following year. After practicing for a short time in Cleveland, Ohio, Dean Griswold served as an attorney in the Office of the Solicitor General of thc United States and as Special Assistant to the Attorney General from 1929 to 1934. ln the latter year he was appointed to membership on the Faculty of the Harvard Law School, in June of 1946 he was named Dean. Dean Griswold's contributions to legal literature have been principally in the fields of the ConHict of Laws, Federal Taxation, and of Trusts. He is the author of Spendthrift Trusts, of which a second edition has just been pub- lished and of various articles. He compiled nCases on Federal Taxation and is a co-editor of Cases on Conflict of Laws. Dean Griswold has been an Advisor to the Restatement of Trusts, Restitution and of Judgments. In 1942, he was consulting expert to the United States Treasury Deparinent. This year he is conducting classes in Federal Taxation. RESIDENT CONANT was born in Dorchester, Mass., in 1893. He was graduated from Harvard College in 1913 and received his Ph.D. degree in 1916. From 1916 until 1917 he was Instructor in Chemistry at Harvard, Assistant Professor from 1919 until 1925, Associate Professor from 1925 until 1927, Professor from 1927 until 1929 and Sheldon Emery Professor of Organic Chemistry until 1933. In June of that year he was elected President of Harvard University succeeding A. Lawrence Lowell. A member of the board of scientific directors of the Rockefeller Institute since 1930, President Conant is an honorary fellow of Emmanuel College, Cam- bridge. He served as a lieutenant in the Sanitary Corps of the United States Army in 1917 and as a major in the Chemical Warfare Service in 1918. From 1941 to 1946 he was Chairman of the National Defense Research Committee. In 1946 President Conant became a member of the General Advisory Com- mittee to the United States Atomic Energy Commission. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, the Imperial Academy of Science fHallel, the Royal Society flilnglandj , and the Royal Society of Edinburgh fEnglandJ . L1v1NcsroN HALL BIEMBER of the Law School Faculty since 1932, Professor Hall was appointed Vice- Dean in 1939. His earlier experience include pri- vate practice in New York City and service as As- sistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. On leave of ahsence during the war years he acted as Regional Attorney for the O.P.A. in the Boston area, and from 1943 to 1945 was Chief of the Operations Analysis Sections with the Thirteenth and Twentieth Air Forces and the Far East Air Forces in the Southwest Pacific, hold- ing the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His published writings include numerous con- tributions to legal periodicals, and a casehook on Crilninal Law co-edited with Professor Glueck. He has taught Torts, Agency, and Criminal Law. Born: 1903 in Chicago, 111.3 Ph.B., 1923, Univer- Vice-Dean and Professor of Law N 1906 Professor Seavey became theshead of the Law School of Pei Yang University, China. From 1912 to 1920 he served consecutively at Har- vard and on the faculties of the Universities of Oklahoma, Tulane and Indiana. During W'orld War 1, he was a captain in the A.E.F. and in 1919 became Director of theiCollcge of Law, A.E.F. University. From 1920 to 1926 he was Dean of the Law School at the University of Nchraskag in 1926 he was Pro- fessor at the University of Pennsylvania, and in 1927 returned to Harvard. He has edited casehooks in Torts and Agency and is a Reporter for the Restate- ments of Agency, Restitution fPart 11. Torts and Judgments. Professor Seavey now teaches Torts and Agency.
