Connie Cooper, Jermaine Bryant The 1950-51 Season Considering the fact that the Hartley Girls’ Basketball team had only one reg- ular (Neola) back from last year, they really put up a do-or-die fight. This year’s sche- dule was one of the toughest ever played by a Hartley sextette. The Hartley Hawkettes finished their season with a record of eight victories and eleven defeats, scoring 781 points to their opponents’ 836. A thriller diller of a ball game came when Neola Rasmussen and Ella Boernsen teamed up to hold Wachtel, the Sanborn scoring machine, to 1 5 points in the Sectional Tourney. Wachtel had previously beaten us single-handedly with a splurge of 45 points. Some notable victories were over Pocahontas, 47-44; Gruver, 53-45; Albert City, 42-39; and Hartley’s surge of scoring power over Arnolds Park, 76-29. Neola was selected on Jack North’s third team (All-State) this year. Jermain? and Corene won the Sectional free throw contest, but lost out in the District. Letter winners were: Neola Rasmussen, Ella Boernsen, Ruth Mayer, Alma Walker, Jermaine Bryant, Corene Fahrenkrog, Connie Cooper, Violet Walker, and Lois Kranninger. Gary Ahrenstorff and Cloy Olhausen received second all-conference ratings; and Maurice Schmoll, Don McCarty, Dan Mc- Carty, and Cass Curtis received honorable mention.
