And reach for the heavens and hope for the future and all that we can be and not what we are. Dear Class of 1984, As a Class, you are entering into the middle of one of the most scientifically and technically advanced decades of modern civilization. As you enter into this hi tech society, I am hop- ing that you do not lose sight of the impor- tance of touch and humanity in general. There is no doubt that the robot and the com- puters can replace much of what people are doing today; however, neither a computer, or a robot can understand the fragile mind or the tender personality. You, as future Americans and as the future leaders of society, must re- serve the right for touch and regulate hi tech . We've been drilled and tested to the point where our frustrations peaked. But, always, we came through. And now, as we look towards graduation and our futures, we can reflect upon our years here and remember all the great times we've had together. Although the purpose of this institution is to instruct us in academic areas, Harrison High School has also provided us with great memories and even better friendships. We finally made it through and are all the better for it. As we look at this book in later years, we will always remember and cherish the times we've had as a class. The Reminiscence staff would like to wish the class of 1984 all the best in the future. Since last )une, the officers and several class members have been planning to insure that our prom is exciting and successful. In addition, several other activities have been planned. This is one senior class that's going to do it all with style. JUNIOR CLASS The junior Class has had a very successful year so far. Our main concern this year is fundraising, and we again had a lollipop sale. In the planning are several activities including a baseball game, a Broadway play, and a ski trip. We hope that all activities will be a great success. SOPHOMORE CLASS The Sophomore Class has been busy with activities and fundraising this year. We began our fundraising with a candy sale at It's Great to Live in Harrison day and soon followed with an election day bake sale. We've planned a ski trip as well as several other activities. We also organized the class ring sale. In short, we look forward to a great year. FRESHMAN CLASS This year, the Freshmen class has planned several fundraisers to get us off to a great start. We have held the annual magazine sale and hope to raise a lot more money. We also hope to have great class participa- tion in all activities. The Class of 1987 is ready for success at HHS. Continuing a policy of strict meeting attendance and oper- ation, we have had great attendance and participation at our meetings. We have had great success with our Hal- loween party and square dance. An aggregate of school spirit, we donned the heads of HHS with Rack Rye Up hats and continued the sentiment by hiring a plane to fly the message over the field. Though we still have yet to fulfill our plans of complete and total world domination, a permanent mark of brilliance has surely been left by this administration. These are the trials and tribulations of the yearbook, Reminiscence 1984. It's one year mission: to explore strange new graphic techniques, to seek out new styles and new ideas. To boldly go where no student has gone before ... (theme music). Captain's Log — Stardate: 031984; Each year in mid-August, the more dedicated yearbook editors spend three concentrated days at St. Bona venture University. It is here that the yearbook is bom. Themes are dreamed up and tossed out while everyone ponders over the cover. The cover must relate to the theme, not be ostenta- tious, and most of all it must be better than last year's cover. After three days we know how well we get along with each other, Genie beats Stephanie with moccasins, while everyone puts their dinner scraps in Genie's salad. (I wonder why Mr. Byrwa isn't eating with us anymore?). All in all we've got a good group just as long as we avoid all Pondarosa restaurants (we only had a little food fight!) It is at this point that Mr. Byrwa and the two main editors decide who is going to do what and who we should recruit to do everything else. Recruitment is a difficult process. People have to be screened, commitments must be given, and The Test must be taken. Anyone who finds their way to the Yearbook Room three days in a row and can also be productive has passed The Test . Each editor and staff person has their own personality which gives the book a personal touch, but also tends to lead to humorous episodes we will look back upon years from now and laugh at. We would like to share some of them with you. Our Underclassmen Editors, Karin and Lynn, were quite a pair. One thing that set them apart was the fact that Lynn ate everything that moved and Karin was allergic to anything that Lynn ate. In fact, Karin is the only person that we know who can get drunk on Pepsi. One thing we all will remember is the green birthday cake Karin bought for Lynn. No one actually said that it was bad, but then again not many had seconds. I think it was the fact that we ate it off of paper towels. One last cautious note on Karin, and Lynn, don't let Karin get too dose to unsturdy wall of any sort. She has the habit of knocking down soda walls which could seriously injure innocent people. Both did a splen- did job and who could ask for anything more? Eva, on the other hand, was our quiet Faculty Editor. She silently did her work which was usually on time. The faculty section is more difficult than one may think, espedally when your teachers blackmail you into putting a good picture of them in. Notorious for getting attached to her work, Eva once found herself sticking to posters she was hanging up in the faculty hangout. When it comes to business, we have definitely had an interesting year. After two years of Warren, we didn't know if we could deal with anyone else. Louis volunteered his services as Business Editor. His infamous phrases such as Nobody wants to take out ads these days and I'm going skiing , will be eternally engraved in the year- book walls. Louis' energies were exerted early in the year. Diane helped out later by getting ads galore. Business is the most impor- tant part of any yearbook we were told at St. Bonnie's, so we are glad to have Chris. After Louis graced us with his presence for a whole month (that's four weeks), he decided to go skiing for a long time. Chris kindly took over the section and built an empire out of it. In the beginning of the year we selected our part time Senior Editor, lackie Spindola. lackie had the neatest layouts out of every- one. She did her section well until the Senior Directory came along. We soon found out that lackie hates typing. (You'll notice how long 184 — Reminiscence Student Life — 185 Opposite page: Above left Bdl Rossi This page: Above left Michele CamardeOa; Above center Lynn Wetdberg; Above right Jennifer McDonugh; Below left Karin Fakigno; Below right Eva Permutt 186 — Reminiscence Reminiscence Staff — First row Dianne Faup, Michele Camardella, Stephanie (The Chief) Rossi, Genie (Click) Contrata. Missing from this momentous event: Michelle Walt her I, Jennifer McDonough, Christopher G. Robinson, Louis (Why Me?) Rizzo, Mr. Larry Byrwa the Directory is.) No one will ever forget )ackie. She was one of a kind. Seeing as Stephanie did such a top-notch job on the Sports section last year we gave the section to her brother, Billy. (Thinking the talent for sports layouts ran in the family.) Oh, what a mistake! We soon found out that Stephanie could do a topnotch job two years in a row. Billy is one for stalling and giving his work to other people such as Michele Camardella or Jennifer McDonnough. When Billy went out for Winter Track we became worried that he wouldn't get his work done. So he was injected with a special formula of Ruffle's potato chips and C C Cola (a deadly combina- tion). This formula caused Billy to dislocate his hip, taking him out of the season and giving him the nickname of Gimpy Genie Contrata, yes, yes. Genie took almost all of our senior candids for the section. She was always seen with a camera in hand until SENIORITIS set in (as our Delmar Representative George Geer says). Genie has a very short temper. She used her high temper to get even the shyest person in front of her camera. Thanks to Genie, we had almost no repetitions in the Senior Section. Our Copy Editor, Michelle Walther was one of a kind. No matter what mood anyone was in she always made everyone laugh. Especially when she did her Matt Dillion impression. Her famous line, Stay gold PonyBoy will al- ways be remembered. A woman of high character and unusual dressing habits, Michelle and her Peter Pan haber- dashery will live in infamy. Stephanie and Chris, an interesting duo, sometimes compared to Abbott and Costello. They were dangerous when they were together. Known as the sharpshooters of the proportional wheels; they were locked up in separate rooms so they couldn't hurt anyone. They were the Moth- er and Father hens of the yearbook staff. The dynamic duo kept all intruders out of the yearbook room so that their children could work without being interrupted. Strug- gling through trips to the city to pickup the cover artwork and fignewton imitations, Chris and Stephanie seemed to have put out a good book (despite their eccentricities). Of course they could not have done it without the preceding editors and the upcoming advisors to whom the staff prob- ably owes their life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Our friend and representative, Mr. George Geer, will be very dearly missed. His words of wisdom and kind consid- eration was and always will be appreciated. He is a man who watches out for and cares about everyone. The yearbook would not and could not be possible without him. Thank heavens we have a life time contract with him! Mr. Lawrence Byrwa, the man, the teacher, the friend. He is an unbelievable person. Always giving unstingingly of his time. Mr. Byrwa will be missed by the seniors (two students in particular). He's the kind of person the mold is broken after he is bom. You only have one of a person like him every million years. Thank you all for a wonderful time. Good luck next year. - the Captain Student Life — 187 Chorus Chorus Officers: (Left to Right) Vicki Morey (Secretary), Jackie Schottenfeld (President), Ricky Strauss (Treasurer), Kim Stephens (Vice President), Mr Kellogg Select Chorus: First row Jamie Mayer, Lynn Weidberg, Frankie Ann Pezzella, Lisa Goldstein, Kim Stephens, Lisa Montenaro, Denise Peliaan, Jackie McGowan, Terri Gambino. This line in many ways describes Mr. Edward Garrity. He was a quiet man, but his reticence was not indicative of a person who desires solitude; on the contrary, Mr. Garrity's warmth and friendliness showed in his eyes and in his attentiveness to the people around him. Coupled with this warmth was enormous strength of character. He never complained, but looked on the bright side of life. Some will remember him as the coach ; others, as one of the best teachers at Harrison High School; and still others, as a gentle but strong man who bore his destiny with patience, with courage, and with faith. The Marching Band and Color Guard worked diligently to provide Harrison fans with an outstanding half-time program, recognized as one of the finests in the county. While this year's band boasted several fine musicians and All-County selections, the color guard produced a new program, surpassing routines of previous years. Both groups participated in It's Great to Live In Harrison Day and the annual Rye Pep Rally, adding to the spirit of the occasions. Majorettes — Under the direction of Mrs. Paula Tarantino, the Majorettes began choreographing their routines in late July, devoting many hours to perfecting their program. Join- ing the Marching Band and Color Guard, they entertained audiences at Varsity Football games and pep rallies as well as local functions. The squad is presently preparing for regional competitions, and hopes for the repeated success of past competitions. Varsity Cheerleaders — Harrison's Varsity Cheerleaders, under advisor Marie Dinisio, spent many hours promoting school spirit both on and off the field. Their enthusiasm during games and pep rallies added greatly to the intensity of fall and winter games. Topping off their activities, the squad competed at the Westchester County Center and proudly brought a trophy back to Harrison. Varsity Football — Despite a disappointing loss to Rye, the 1983 Huskies had an exceptional season, boasting a league championship and a number one ranking in Westchester. While competing against the larger teams in Conference A, the small squad, led by several outstanding players, was strong and extremely competitive. Congratulations to Co- Captains Joe Chiera and Vinny lanucci and senior David Massi for their outstanding work. 308 — Reminiscence Cross-Country — This season marked the final coaching year of Mr. Peter Lopuch, and the team worked hard to make it a success. Continuing a training program begun last year, each team member strove to make this season a winning one. Though collectively the squad was unable to attain a successful season, many individual members had outstanding moments on the course, especially senior Tony Fedele and sophomore Ida Dupont. Varsity Soccer — Under the direction of Mr. Mike Liber- tella. While playing with many skilled strong individuals, the Varsity Soccer team had a very disappointing season. Com- peting in an extremely tough conference, the squad proved competitive and a challenge to all opponents, yet unable to attain the winning edge. Congratulations are extended to senior John Hammer and junior Scott Tolchin for their excel- lent play. Varsity Tennis — This year, the promise of several returning players propelled the team to their best season in recent years. Though the team will miss graduating seniors Carol Friedman and Jodi Rappaport, many young players will most likely continue in the program and seriously contend for a conference title. Varsity Field Hockey — The Varsity Field Hockey team, under the direction of Ginger Wentink, has continued to improve over past seasons, playing in a division dominated by the region's largest schools. Though the team was unsuc- cessful on the scoreboards, the returning of several strong and experienced players, including high-scorer Mary Ellen Carino, will certainly strengthen the Harrison program. Varsity Swimming — The Girls Varsity Swimming team, under coach Kathi Hochberg, improved over last years re- Winter Sports Summary cord, adding to the returning swimmers, senior newcomer Lynne Albertelli had a good season. Varsity Volleyball — Though starting out with an unremar- kable season, the Varsity Volleyball squad began to slowly improve with time. A small team, and often inexperienced, the members worked hard to claim a respectable record. Though the squad will miss senior Lynda Mustacato, the return of underclassmen will enable coach Marc Delzio to improve on team skills. Bowling — Harrison's Bowling team, under the direction of Mr. William Frondi, had an exceptional season. The team, consisting mostly of freshmen, not only had a fine win-loss record collectively, but also boasted several outstanding individual bowlers in Dee Snyder and Todd Alpert. Con- gratulations to the entire team for their fine season. Varsity Basketball — Under new coach, Mr. Rich Caputo, the Boys' Varsity Basketball Team had a difficult season. Facing tough competition in a large league, they were un- able to gain a great number of wins. However, the team played consistently and competitively. The return of high- scorer Scott Tolchin and several promising underclassmen will be greatly anticipated next year. Boys Wrestling — While collectively, the team did not have its greatest season, the individual efforts of several of the wrestlers are to be commended. Senior Victor Arcara did well in his weight class and broke many school records. Gymnastics — Harrison's Gymnastic team, under new coach Judy Ankers fared quite weil this year. Senior Steph- anie Singer's continued success in the conference mark her as the foremost gymnast in the region. Several underclass- men, including Anne Morgenroth, boosted not only Harri- son's confidence, but our scores as well. Congratulations to the entire squad for a fine season. Varsity Girls Varsity Basketball — The Harrison girl's bas- ketball team ended its season with an 8-13 record. Led by the soft touch of Lynda Mustacato and the agility of Rox- anne DiBuono, the Co-Captains, the Husky squad enjoyed some very well earned victories. Rounding out the team are seniors Cathy Prendergast and Dawn Motta and Kathy Quadagno. A controversial win for the Huskies was a 54-52 overtime thriller against Saunders in which Judy Green led all of the Huskies with 20 points. Congratulations to all of the team members. Boys Varsity Swimming — Under Coach Jerry Curran, the Harrison Varsity Swimming team got a great boost from the efforts of several individual competitors. Seniors Marc D'Antonio and Tim Ellis were strong in several events in- cluding the_________relay. Senior Tim Ellis continually fin- ished high in his events and qualified for regional and state competitions. In the conference, the Harrison squad was strong and competitive, and all team members are to be congratulated in their efforts. Winter Track — This year's team had a terrific start with its incredible enrollment of 25 boys and girls who accepted the challenge of winter track. However as was expected, many were disillusioned and soon realized that track is hard work. The combination of weather and hard work gave many members cold feet. But, for all these reasons, I feel that it would be fitting to congratulate those diehard runners who finished the season with flying colors. Congratulations on a job well done.
