Because the new home economics wing was not yet completed, ho- memaking classes were held in a temporary room in the gymnasium. The foods and nutrition section usu- ally included in homemaking courses was not offered because of lack of facilities, but excellent instruction in the areas of clothing, home improve- ment, home management, and self improvement provided variety for in- terested girls. Brenda Shephard, Carol Orbison, and Linda Drury use the Commons to do their homework for home economics. Students Prepare For Careers As Homemakers Sharon Law and Joan Harper receive help from Miss Darlene Thomas, student teacher. 28

Drivers Education Movie Emphasizes Speed Kills The traffic problem is one which must be directly and forcefully at- tacked. By 1970, four million young people will reach the legal driving age each year. Under the guidance and instruction of Mr. Donald Hansen, Harrison's Driver Education course prepares students to drive efficiently and safely. This year, classes practiced driving in a 1968 Plymouth Fury provided by Perkins Motor Company. ,p I A Drivers education students Juan Collazo, Jeff Laser and George Scott intently watch the factual movie Signal One. Artists Apply Contemporary Techniques to Classical Ideas Mr. George Burnett and Mrs. Mildred Bay- less instruct the comprehensive courses in art at Harrison. Individual projects selected by the students broaden their creative ability. Clay sculptures, mosaics, stained glass, and block printing were among the most popular pro- jects chosen by the students. For a concen- trated Christmas project Mrs. Mildred Bay- less's classes centered their efforts on making six-foot long cards for the Harrison alumni in Viet Nam. Felis Rivera uses her artistic talent for one of the many projects in art, Christmas cards for Harrison alumni in Viet-Nam. A display of current art projects was in the display case for many weeks. Sketches. modern collages and metal work were among the most interesting.

One ofthe duties of Audio-visual students is keeping the equipment in good working condition. Dwayne Greiss, Dave Sacchetta and Mike Parker replace a bulb in a movie projector. A.V., Mechanical Drawing And Shop Head Tlge Vocational Studies Harrison's audio-visual facilities were greatly increased and im- proved. ln order to keep the equip- ment properly maintained and ready for use, a new class. Audio- Visual, was introduced. Students interested in drawing were able to choose between ar- chitectural and mechanical drawing. Training in the proper use of equipment and techniques was stressed in these vocational cour- ses. Shop classes included facilities for wood and metal courses. Stu- dents learned valuable skills and techniques that will help them in later vocational work. i Steve Tesner uses the T-square and triangle to produce an effective drawing 29
