Language Department Lays Groundwork For Cultural Understanding Current foreign magazines are always accessible in the language rooms. Mary Hyde, a French student, glances through a copy of Life, translated into Spanish. Daily practice and review is necessary for first year stu- dents. - S2 of Harrison students interested in languages and customs of foreign lands may choose to study German, French, Latin, or Spanish. New teachers and new equipment have brought many changes in the language department. Participation and under- standing of a language are increased through the use of audio-visual aids provided by the new lan- guage labs. Miss Jeanne Sabo often relates her experience in Spain with the use of many authentic souvenirs. 25

Students Display Interest In Math The capable teachers and outstanding textbooks employed by I-larrison's mathemat- ics department make for success. At Harrison, building general knowledge, as well as a foun- dation tor further studies, is emphasized in the basic courses. Understanding and achieve- ment of problems in matrix, geometric pro- gressions, trigonometry, and calculus are stressed in the more advanced courses. Advanced students are often interested in extra puzzles outside of their class work. Randy Stewart demonstrates his exceptional ability to solve one of these problems.

Business Department Acquires New Equipment For many students, training received in high school is the only training they will receive. To accommodate these students and to prepare them for initial employment Harrison has enlarged and modernized its Business Department. Two typing rooms are used to train beginning and advanced students. A wireless steno-trainer enables the shorthand student to select his own speed and to work on an individual basis. The office machines room contains a variety of machines found in most business offices. With the wide variety of courses offered, both for personal and vocational use, and the many facilities available, the business student may select courses which will adequately prepare him for the many job opportunities that await him in the world of business.
