Every year the graduating class selects a Harrison High School faculty member who, they feel, has contributed something special to the students and the school. The Class of 1968 is honored to recognize Mr. Starritt by dedicating the '68 Panther to him. Chief's way of understanding and communicating, bridges the generation gap. ln the positions of Athletic Director, past Student Council advisor and Letter- man's Club sponsor, he has been involved with students and their activities . Graduating represents a gain, but also a loss . For our class the loss is of a personality, a style, an individual, an example, and a friend. It is to Mr. Starritt then, that we dedicate the 1968 Panther . May it represent to him an occasional reminder of our appreciation, as he will ever remind us of H.H.S . 15 STUDY, TALK, ACTION, FUN: these activities are the center of Student Life . .vo- -1 Wx fe 'M Applying theatrical make-up is an important ingredient in the understanding of the theatre. Q Mrs. Greene offers suggestions on sentence structure to her Junior English class. Claudia Lamphear, a pleasant and sincere speaker, displays her ability to organize, prepare and present an interesting speech. 19 Students were challenged to an elective program of courses within the history and social studies department, which presented a totally revamped curriculum this year. World history and U.S. history now divided into three-semester pro- grams, were selected by students accor- ding to their particular interest. Classes in psychology and senior problems pro- students with the opportunity to personality formation and per- vided study sonal, family, and community relation- ships. Social Studies Invite Student Judy Hunt reviews her psychology test before handing it in. ABOVE. Studying world history is mandatory for sophomores. Mr. Michael Borns lectures on an important event. RIGHT. A relatively new course, Senior Problems, involves the writing of numerous themes. Jayne Veteto elaborates on the art of dating. Interest ln World Affairs Mr. Pete Rodriguez offers an interesting lecture on the differences between a democracy and a dictatorship. RIGHT. Outside reading was an interesting addition to psychology, Larry Caldwdll glances through a contemporary magazine based on teen-age psychology. 1 X! Introductory courses offered in the sci- ence department are designed to give gen- eral background information. Basic science and earth science were held in the new building. Pending the completion of the science wing, biology, chemistry and phys- ics were held in the junior high. These advanced courses are geared to help the more capable students, through experi- mentation and films, ilinderstand the con- cepts and principles of the scientific world. RIGHT. Co-operation is needed in biology as well as in other areas. Irene Tarleton, Barb Smith, Linda Smith, and John Fontanez demonstrate the correct way to type blood. BOTTOM. Nlr. Students Display Interest In Math The capable teachers and outstanding textbooks employed by I-larrison's mathemat- ics department make for success. At Harrison, building general knowledge, as well as a foun- dation tor further studies, is emphasized in the basic courses. Understanding and achieve- ment of problems in matrix, geometric pro- gressions, trigonometry, and calculus are stressed in the more advanced courses. Advanced students are often interested in extra puzzles outside of their class work. Randy Stewart demonstrates his exceptional ability to solve one of these problems. Language Department Lays Groundwork For Cultural Understanding Current foreign magazines are always accessible in the language rooms. Mary Hyde, a French student, glances through a copy of Life, translated into Spanish. Daily practice and review is necessary for first year stu- dents. - S2 of Harrison students interested in languages and customs of foreign lands may choose to study German, French, Latin, or Spanish. New teachers and new equipment have brought many changes in the language department. Participation and under- standing of a language are increased through the use of audio-visual aids provided by the new lan- guage labs. Miss Jeanne Sabo often relates her experience in Spain with the use of many authentic souvenirs. 25 While Sue Wilkins corrects an error on a stencil, Liz Clark adds up a work book assignment in office practice. BOTTOlVl. J. R. Burnett prys loose a set of jammed keys in Typing 1. 93. - '..' 5. ' J. Business Department Acquires New Equipment For many students, training received in high school is the only training they will receive. To accommodate these students and to prepare them for initial employment Harrison has enlarged and modernized its Business Department. Two typing rooms are used to train beginning and advanced students. A wireless steno-trainer enables the shorthand student to select his own speed and to work on an individual basis. The office machines room contains a variety of machines found in most business offices. With the wide variety of courses offered, both for personal and vocational use, and the many facilities available, the business student may select courses which will adequately prepare him for the many job opportunities that await him in the world of business. Drivers Education Movie Emphasizes Speed Kills The traffic problem is one which must be directly and forcefully at- tacked. By 1970, four million young people will reach the legal driving age each year. Under the guidance and instruction of Mr. Donald Hansen, Harrison's Driver Education course prepares students to drive efficiently and safely. This year, classes practiced driving in a 1968 Plymouth Fury provided by Perkins Motor Company. ,p I A Drivers education students Juan Collazo, Jeff Laser and George Scott intently watch the factual movie Signal One. Artists Apply Contemporary Techniques to Classical Ideas Mr. George Burnett and Mrs. Mildred Bay- less instruct the comprehensive courses in art at Harrison. Individual projects selected by the students broaden their creative ability. Clay sculptures, mosaics, stained glass, and block printing were among the most popular pro- jects chosen by the students. For a concen- trated Christmas project Mrs. Mildred Bay- less's classes centered their efforts on making six-foot long cards for the Harrison alumni in Viet Nam. Felis Rivera uses her artistic talent for one of the many projects in art, Christmas cards for Harrison alumni in Viet-Nam. A display of current art projects was in the display case for many weeks. Sketches. modern collages and metal work were among the most interesting. Because the new home economics wing was not yet completed, ho- memaking classes were held in a temporary room in the gymnasium. The foods and nutrition section usu- ally included in homemaking courses was not offered because of lack of facilities, but excellent instruction in the areas of clothing, home improve- ment, home management, and self improvement provided variety for in- terested girls. Brenda Shephard, Carol Orbison, and Linda Drury use the Commons to do their homework for home economics. Students Prepare For Careers As Homemakers Sharon Law and Joan Harper receive help from Miss Darlene Thomas, student teacher. 28 One ofthe duties of Audio-visual students is keeping the equipment in good working condition. Dwayne Greiss, Dave Sacchetta and Mike Parker replace a bulb in a movie projector. A.V., Mechanical Drawing And Shop Head Tlge Vocational Studies Harrison's audio-visual facilities were greatly increased and im- proved. ln order to keep the equip- ment properly maintained and ready for use, a new class. Audio- Visual, was introduced. Students interested in drawing were able to choose between ar- chitectural and mechanical drawing. Training in the proper use of equipment and techniques was stressed in these vocational cour- ses. Shop classes included facilities for wood and metal courses. Stu- dents learned valuable skills and techniques that will help them in later vocational work. i Steve Tesner uses the T-square and triangle to produce an effective drawing 29 Choruses Present Concerts Madrigal Singers STANDING. This year was no exception. The counselors worked hard to make sure every available source of information for college bound stu- dents was at hand. Students not planning to attend college were advised of vocational schools and opportunities. Each student's achieve- ments are kept on record in the counseling office. Mrs. Bauers is responsi- ble for keeping them in order and up to date. Ron Thomas is one of the many students who went to Mr. Dave Crabtree for advice and counseling. Programs And Ideas Mr. Dave Crabtree's counseling office is a familiar place for all students. Joanne Ferrino uses it to confer with a new student Counseling involves a tremendous amount of paper work. Starting league competition against Widefield, the Panthers lost a meaningful game. Going on in league play, H.H.S. downed Academy, Cheyenne, and St. Mary's: then, with one game left in the first round of play, the Panthers were upset by Canon City. Again, Harrison lost a close game to Widefield, starting the second round of play. But, as before in the first round, the Panther men were able to beat Academy and Cheyenne, before losing to Roncalli. Tied with St. Mary's for second place, Harrison lost their first televised game, and second place in the league standings. Paul Gagnon drives up and under for an easy lay up.
