Needle Trades shops began with one sewing ma- chine, one class, one teacher for twenty-six students, including sophomores, iuniors, seniors. Needle trades began in i938 in the old vocational building then located on Michigan cmd Madison Avenues. ln i939 when the school moved into the new building, the Singer Company supplied seven power machines. At this time all the needle trades girls wore uniforms of blue cotton with a white flap at the collar. A primary iob for all girls was working at'Steins. ln i956-57 Whitney employs three teachers to in- struct the three classes. Post graduates may enter the needle trades course. excl 6, Una. as
