Distributive education includes all torms of training for persons employed in the distributive occupations, whether this takes place in a public school, or in the training department of a retail store. Thousands of young people enter the field of retailing yearly, many ot whom later become store executives. Through initiative of progressive retailers and educators the authorization of Federal vocational education funds to encourage training tor'the distributive occupations was included in the George-Deen Act, approved by Congress in 1936. This authorization was increased in the George-Borden Act, approved in l9-46. By these acts the Federal treasury authorized financial assistance to state boards for voca- tional education. In turn, state boards make these funds available to local boards, who organize and conduct classes for persons employed in distributive occupations. LSULLULKLUUE

When Whitney was organized Foods and Institutional Service were two different shops. The latter shop was sometimes called home management. Foods girls received their training in the cafeteria. As in many concerns, the shop had to start from scratch having only a hot plate and an electric roaster on which to cook. Teachers waited in line along with students for lunch. The counters in the cafeteria, today, had not been installed. Home management girls had their training in the tearoom and bake shop. When the tearoom first opened to the public, linen table cloths and napkins were used but soon abandoned for place mats and paper napkins. ' -foods
