In presenting the 1943 First Lady, the staff has found the task to be 21 pleasant one - - easy because there was so much to include - - hard because so much. of necessity, had to be omitted. With regret, the staff announces this to be the last edition of the First Lady until the war is won. That this be an accurate record of a momentous year is our aim. Hartnett. Even though she has left our midst, there is "some portion of our hearts forever dedicated to her." Mrs. Hartnett was born in Hudson, Michigan, November 12, 1891 where she received her preliminary education at Hudson High School. Majoring in commercial subjects at Cleary's College in Ypsilanti, Mich- igan, she later studied for her degree at Boulder and Columbia Univer- sities. 1 Her first experience was in her home town where she taught commercial subjects at her alma mater. Other positions took her as far from Hudson as Marshfield, Oregon. Teaching in 'Doledo -for the past eighteen years, she was one of a small group who made a school like Whitney possible. To you, Ruth Hartnett, our deepest love and admiration in dedicating the First Lady of 1943. Page seven ful' We Qcvuyel' .... Our nation is en- gaged in the greatest conflict for our preservation of democracy that the world has ever known. PALHTISERS A small organization called the Paleteers, has been in existence since 1940. One day the art classes received an invitation to go to a party given by the art club of another high school. As a result of this party the Paleteers Club was formed. 'The duties of the members are to help with art work on the First Lady and to decorate the school for holidays and special occasions. They also sponsor such social activities as dances, roasts, and entertaining othler art groups. Pagc fzvmzty-smw1z SPORTS Physical Education is designed for recreation and maintaining bodily fitness. There is a large variety of individual sports from which to make a choice. "Among the most popular are badminton, table tennis, and archery," reports gym instructor Elsie Gottshall. Bowling and swimming are two activities outside of school. There are 125 girls ennolled in the bowling league which meets every week. The swimming classes held at the Young Women's Christian As- sociation give the girls a chance to enjoy a summer sport in winter. Modern and square dances are taught during the gym periods. The girls enjoy trying to become proficient in these. Basketball and volleyball are the two principal team games. As part of the physical fitness program theey help keep the girls in good condition and teach them the value of good sportsmanship and teamwork. V , f' u- 141 Q1 Cm .
