THE SHIELD IS ALWAYS THE VERY YEAR comes the problem of introducing the Shield, of telling its point of view, its theme. This year we found ourselves in difficulties. There seemed nothing new to say. All the clever things, the witty com- ments, the penetrating remarks had been made. Previous Shields had described the handsome boys, beautiful girls. and inspiring teachers to full extent. As we looked through annuals of other years we felt unable to say anything previously unsaid about Harper and the Shield. It was as we examined the pictures that an idea came to us. ,AME AND ALWAYS DIFFERENT idea. Harper is always the same and yet always dif- ferent. From one year to the next our students have the same kind of teachers, belong to the same organizations and study the same subjects. This lends continuity and permanence. However, our student body is always changing. Every year old friends say farewell: we wel- come new friends. This makes Harper an institution where the clubs, organizations, and classes, change slowly in response to the demands of the succeeding years. Thus Harper is a school that preserves the best of the past and welcomes the finest of the future.
