I-IGLT FF-10 4 USS HAROLD E. HOLT is one of a class of 45 escort ships especially designed for locating and destroying enemy submarines. She is also capable of escorting convoys, conducting missions of search, patrol, rescue, evacuation, blockade, visit and search, or survillance. The ship is powered by a single screw driven by a 35,000 horsepower steam turbine with steam provid-ed by two 1200 PSI boilers. She is capable of speeds in excess of 27 knots with a cruisingradius of over 4000 miles. Holt is equipped with 4 electric generators capable of producing three million watts of electricity. USS HAROLD E. HOLTs armament consists of Anti-Submarine rockets CASROCJ, a single 5 54 cal gun, torpedo tubes, and basic Point Defense surface to air missles. These weapons are guided by an array of highly sophisticated Sonar and Radar as well as by LAMPS helicopters, which the ship has the capability of embarking. The ship is 438 feet in length, 46 ft 9 in in width, and displaces 4200 tons when fully loaded. This deployment marks the fourth one to the Western Pacific since the ship was commis- sioned in 1971. HOLT's insignia is to denote the unity existing between the nations of Australia and the United States. This was accomplished by using, by their kind permission, the coat of arms of the Australian State of Victoria emblazoned on the breast of an American eagle. The coat of arms of Victoria was chosen because it depicts the southern cross constellation, which is also symbolized on the Australian national ensign, and Victoria is the state where the late Prime Minister Holt lived throughout most of his life and repre- sented in the National Parliament. The two crossed tridents in the grasp of the eagle symbolize sea power. The anchor is an ancient nautical symbol. A Queen is picked and the stage is set for the next day's festivities. Bright and early the pollywogs muster for breakfast C?j and quarters on the Foc'sle. Although twenty years had passed almost nothing had changed. The capital city of Honiara where the USS Holt and the USS Whipple called was still a dusty and rustic town with one main street and a shopping complex with 10 family run general stores. The people of the Solomans were preparing to declare their independence from Great Britian and Holt and Whipple were sent as a contingent ofthe U.S. delagation which also included U.S. Senator John Glenn of Ohio and many U S. State Dept officials. Although no one knew what to expect it was soon foundlthat the people were very friendly and out oin invitin man sailors of free 8 8 8 Y tours and into their homes and private clubs. The crew of the Holt saw first hand the battlefields where many of their relatives and friends fou ht d d' d ' ' ' g an ie in one of World War ll s fiercest battles. A reception arrranged bythe State Dept highlighted the visit and was attended by war heroes and dignitaries of several countries. The most memorable sight though was at parade time. Holt and Whipple had organized a Drill Team to represent the U.S - When the American Flag passed in review a roar went up from the crowd that was unequaled for any other flag or float a symbol to us that Americans are still loved and remembered for what we have done to preS9VVe democracy in this world. l so I A ...,....-,M .--f-,.-,.,.,. .....,,,.,.,,,f.,,...,-,f...,..,.. --.-.-,.:.. 4 ,,..5..f,,,.,,..,,. -,-L... -.4-r-. -- -f - L- , , , -V.. .- ---- L- ,N ...Ln- EXAMINING LEFTOVER WW II ARTILLERY 5 , '51 . v ,V :Wish 5 5 DRESS SHIP AT NIGHT IN HONIARA 5,L,,f,Q.,, fm M, .,.,,-, ,wb fs ,., L,,k . 4. ,,,,fwmi5kE+s QW. 5 .,,. , .wfzqff f ,L-, 4' ,, NVQ, -.,XQfw.w -. Being the ship's first visit down under, this was the first chance that the U.S. had to show the people of Australia the ship named for their distinguished statesman of the mid-sixties. During open house and also out in town Holt crewmembers were greeted in a friendly and open manner, and many were invited into homes of families wishing to meet an American. Subic Bay is noted for its fine rattan furniture and its wood carvings, which filled the helo hanger to the ceiling on the return trip to Pearl Harbor. The Subic Bay Naval Base offers many recreational activities, includ- ing golf, skeet shooting, archery rangs, go-cart track, swimming, and many excellent clubs. Visits to Manila and Bajiuo City, as well as night life in Olongapo City made Subic a port different than anywhere else in the Orient. 1-----. ?5'f2':'fri' ..-....,........ 4 4' , . 'Ap . H' .4 ,.
