After graduating from the University of Idaho in June 1956, he attended Of- ficer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island and was commissioned in February 1957. His first sea tour was aboard the USS SUMMIT COUNTY CLST-1 1461 where he served as Operations Officer and First Lieutenant. After duty on the Thirteenth Naval District Staff where he was assigned to training teams for Indonesian and Argentine ship transfers, he served on the USS IOWA J IMA QLPH-21 as Damage Con- trol Assistant. CDR. Peterson was then assigned to the Material Divi- sion of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. After attending Naval Destroyer School he served as Engineering Officer on the USS DALE CDLG-192. CDR. Peterson was Executive Officer of the USS BRADLEY CDE-10411 and attended the College of Naval Warfare in Newport, Rhode Island prior to reporting for duty as Commanding Of- ficer of the USS HAROLD E. HOLT. CDR. Peterson is married to the former Esther McDonald of Bremerton, Washington. They have two children, Christine and Tony.
