HOLT CDE-10747 FPO San Francisco 96601 WE ARE IN THE YELLOW PAGES, UNDER HISTORY . That phrase sums up the Western Pacific deployment of 1975 for USS Harold E. Holt. Those of you who were fortunate to be a part of the MAYAGUEZ rescue, yours is an experience that the rest of us can only envy and take pride in the fact that we had the opportunity to become shipmates. As the years pass and each of us reflects back on the l975 cruise, the following pages will help us recall the extended steaming hours, the hard work but mostly the good times and the friends and shipmates with whom we shared the laughs and fun. It is to you the History-makers that this book is dedicated. May each of you experience favorable winds and following seas in the future. Commanding Officer COMMA DER T. F. HUWLEY U.S. . CDR. It offers a wide selection of places to visit and friendly people with which to make acquaintance. Terraced mountain rice paddies, straw huts, water buffalo, and of course wine, women, and song, are a few of the intrigues. The main means of transporation in the Philippines used by the tourist is the J eepney. They are converted World War II Jeeps that are used as taxis. Each is unique and the drivers pride themselves on their creative decorations. The night life in the P.I. is very ac- tive and offers the weary sailor an excellent opportunity to relax and enjoy himself in his home away from home. KARACHI is a densely populated city with many languages spoken and a variety of life styles prac- ticed. The port is a mercantile delight with out- standing bargains on unique items. Pakistan offered historic temples as well as an exciting camel jaunt along the ocean. Walking in downtown KARACHI you could see snake charmers hyp- notizing their deadly pets, and camels pulling heavy carts amidst busy automotive traffic. The islands offered relaxing recreational opportunities for the crew. The crystal clear water and white sandy beaches brought back memories of Hawaii to most of the crewmembers. Deep sea fishing was a highlight for many. The ship's soccer and basketball teams found worthy opponents in the SEYCHELLES UNIVERSITY Teams. It was one of the most exciting and memorable of the countries visited with thrilling picture taking safaris as a highlight. Elephants, giraffes, lions, and zebras in their natural habitats provided picturesque adventure. The opportunity to visit Kenyan Tribes, such as the Masai, seeing how they live and work, and the nearby Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, provided further adventure. Inexpensive jewelry, woodcarvings, and clothing were available. Mombasa was fascinating and educational. ws.. The Snake Temples, Monkey Gardens, and a thrilling ride on the Tram to the top of PENANG HILL with its fan- tastic view, provided memorable ex- periences for many of the crew. Tri-Shaws usually held two passengers and were economical if the traveler was a shrewd bargainer. XR ,Hsin GEORGETOWN, the Islands major city, boasted PEN AN G pewter and colorful batik material. The city's bustling excitement was highlighted by a ride Via Tram up to Victoria Peak where one of the most famous views in the world was enjoyed. The uni- que floating restaurants of Aber- deen, and beautiful Tiger Balm Gardens provided experiences which will be long remembered by many of the crew. Unfortunately our visit in HONG KONG was cut short due to a typhoon threat. Within minutes the distance could be spanned and HAROLD E. HOLT crew members were standing in Tokyo Sta- tion, about to enter one of the most modern industrial cities in the world. It was easy to see why Japan is ranked third in the world economically. The Japanese work hard for their achievements. Despite the shipyard availability and work accomplished in Yokosuka, ample time was available for the uni- que experience of sampling the Japanese culture. The traditional and modern societies were meshed like reduction gears. Most of the children wore neat uniforms to school while some of the older men and women still donned Kimonos. 3 T say, M A - ' . -,'-. - . , ' Z. It has progressed rapidly economically in the past few years despite its few natural resources. Junk boats crowded the harbor, sharing the waterways with modern sea going vessels. The Singapore slings and modern nightlife rnade the Lion City an enjoyable visit. KEELU G, IWA KEELUNG was our second port call. It is located north of the Capital City of Taiwan, Taipei, and is nestled into a snug harbor, surrounded by scenic moun- tains. Taiwan offered the HAROLD E. HOLT crew a chance to purchase quality items for low prices, and an opportunity to talk and socialize with the local citizens. The people were friendly and anxious to please their American visitors. TAIWAN is a progressive, happy country which strives to stay in the running with the rest of the free world. The city of Taipei is very modern and clean. One of the most fascinating buildings in the world is the Grand Hotel which rises high above the city, exploiting the sunlight with its gilded appearance.
