The 1984 King and Queen, Kendall Bigalk and Jodi Helium crowned our new King and Queen, Scott Mandelko and Tara Willford. A new addition to the coronation was the presentation of skits by each class and other organizations. These were judged with the eighth grade class taking first place. Spirit Week was sponsored by the sophomore class and consisted of a different costume for each day: Monday - Dress-up Day, Tuesday - Western Day, Wednesday - each class wore a different color, Thursday - Hat Day, Friday - Burgundy and White Day. Although it rained on Friday, no one's spirits were dampened, and the parade took place as scheduled. Again the eighth grade captured first place with their float and the Senior class took second. The game against Preston-Fountain was close, but in the end the Bluejays were victorious. Forever was the theme of the dance which followed the game. Even though their final record was 9 and 6, they had an outstanding season. Losing into the District Tournament, Harmony was seated 5th out of 13 teams. The girls showed great determination which placed them ahead of the team's expectations. The team was led by 6 seniors: Tara, Mary, Sharon, Andrea, Jodi, and Suzie. The team was also made of 7 juniors. The volleyball team looks promising in the years ahead. 29 1st Row: Sandi Fishbaugher, Sharon Elton, Angie McCabe 2nd Row: Julie Runkel, Andrea Wilt, Tracy Kiehne, Alison Herman 3rd Row: Laura Stevens, Sondra Elton, Kim Dotzenrod 4th Row: Linda Young, Linda Brunsvold 5th Row: Martha Dennstedt, Heather Kiehne Captians: Andrea Wilt, Sondra Elton, Tracy Kiehne, Coach Olson This year the 'B' squad volleyball team had a pretty tough season. Lack of experience was the main reason behind the many loses; however, several games were close. It was a rebuilding season since there were only two returning starters from the previous year. The younger members have gained valuable experience which will enable them to do well in the years ahead. Coach Elston said this of the team: I am proud of the way my seniors provided the leadership in a year that would have given them the opportunity to make excuses and let up. They never let me down — they maintained the Harmony Pride, as far as I'm concerned. Harmony 6 ..................... COACH The Girls Basketball team had an awesome season this year. The team consisted of 2 seniors and 10 juniors. The team jumped to a 9-0 record, but had two tough loses in the conference. Even though they lost the Maple Leaf Conference title to a consis-tant Grand Meadow team, the District championship still looks promising. Harmony has had a tradition of a winning girls basketball team in the last 5 years and this years team has kept it up. Due to so many juniors on the team the future year looks promising. The team would like to thank the band for all their support. They would also like to thank everybody else for cheering the team on. 38 TENACIOUS JODI SHARON B GIRLS BASKETBALL 1st ROW: Sandi Fishbaugher, Amy Elston, Julie Runkel, Melissa Guttormson, 2nd ROW: Martha Dennstedt, Heather Kiehne, Kathy Hutton, Lynda Brunsvold, Sarah Overby, Leann Thomas, 3rd ROW: Allison Herman, Susan Funke, Brenda Stevens, Laura Stevens, Amy Spieker, Coach Richard Kiehne. Those chosen for the honor were: Pat McKernan, Michele Soma, Michelle Vagts, Julie Whalen, Barb Grebin, Travis Willford, Jay Wangen, Rich Bigalk, Casey Martin, and Jeff Nagel. Julie Inglebret gave the Invocation, Scott Hendrickson, the Class History, Matt Jar-land, the Class Will, Matt Plowman, the Class Prophecy, and Dawn Evenson gave the Benediction. Gemini provided the music for the dance. The theme was “High On You and the juniors decorated with a double arch of lavander and silver balloons. f HIGH ON YOU National Honor Society is a national organization which seeks to recognize high school students who demonstrate leadership, scholarship, character and service. The students eligible must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Each year four seniors and four juniors are selected from Harmony High to be in National Honor Society, along with the four returning seniors. For 1985-86 the officers were: President Mary Dahl, Vice-President Casey Martin, Secretary J ulie Ingle-bret and Treasurer Rich Bigalk. Also, to acknowledge other honor students, NHS selects Students-of-the-Quarter. The first quarter a senior is chosen, next quarter a junior and finally a sophomore is selected as the Student-of-the-Quarter for the third nine weeks. These students are not in NHS, but have demonstrated the qualities NHS stands for. This year the National Honor Society has taken on the responsibility of doing the outside school calendar for the year beginning in Feb. Also, as a service project, the members plan to visit the nursing home hoping to bring some joy to these people. In the spring the annual banquet and induction ceremony will be held. The members, their parents, Students-of-the-Quarter and their parents will be present for this special night. Instead of each class electing Student Council representatives, everyone who was interested in being a member filled out an application which was read and evaluated by Mr. Curiskis and President Andrea Storhoff. Approximately 40 applications were submitted and only 25 were accepted. Using this method, people who were class officers could participate in Student Council as well. On October 16, 1985 the following members traveled to Albert Lea to the annual Fall Convention: Tom Hutton, Rich Bigalk, Tom Young, Casey Martin, Barb Grebin, Kris Johnson, Kathy Hutton, Ross Kiehne, Nick Plowman, Shannon Onsager, and Kory Bigalk. There the officers of the Southeast Division were elected and changes in the Constitution were made. The Student Council sponsored the Christmas movies and the Christmas card chimney. They are constantly thinking of new ideas for the school which sometimes go unappreciated. Thanks for all your work! Each girl was assigned a city and a political party when she arrived. For the next five days mock elections and political meetings were held. Each day there were key speakers, such as: the Attorney General, the Secretary of State, and the Majority Leader of Minnesota, to list a few. The highlights of the week included: the inauguration of the Girls' State Governor and the state officials, sworn in by an Associate Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court; and a trip to the capitol where the Girls' State House and Senate meetings were held. Saturday, everyone said good-bye with the promise of writing to all their new-found friends. Mary Dahl 1985 The experience I had at Boys' State is not one I will soon forget. It was one of the most interesting weeks I have ever had. 1 drove to the college of Gustavus Adolphus, where the 1985 Boys' State was held; with four other Staters from this area. The program started the afternoon of Sunday, June 9th with elections for city officials and the organization of sport teams from different cities. To make things a little clearer: every Boy Stater is placed in a city with about twenty other people. Then, each city is placed with one other town to make a county. So, the collective counties were organized into one state ; hence, the name Boys' State. Every day, from Monday the 10th to the end of the week, the cities were required to assemble outside the dorms, at 6:45 A.M., for morning calisthenics. Then we had breakfast. The morning usually contained a lecture on a different aspect of government and alos the mechanics of it. The speakers ranged from the City Manager of Waseca, the Speaker of the MN. House of Representatives, to the State Auditor of MN. The afternoon also contained a meeting lecture, but it wasn't as long as the morning lecture. Then, there was an athletic period set aside for organized sports such as: tennis, basketball, table tennis, softball, and volleyball. This athletic period was enjoyed by me and all of its other participants. The political facet of Boys' State was ever-present. The boys were split into two parties, Nationalists and Federalists, early in the week. During the rest of the week the two parties held caucuses to elect their candidates for the state election. Everyone was running for something; so was I. I ran for city treasurer, district judge, and state delegate. 1 lost in all of the races except for the state seat. On the last night of Boys' State, there was a choir band concert (where I played with 19 other trombones), the inaugeration of the newly elected governor and the knowledge that the week at Boys' State had come to a close for another year. In one word - hectic. Despite the school's small size it has several extracurricular activities to offer. The average student at HHS is involved in at least one of these, which keeps a person busy. During the sports' seasons two late buses run almost every night after practice. This helps cut down the amount of driving to school and the students' transportation costs, although sports are a major factor in the school, other organizations such as FHA, FFA, and National Honor Society are also offered in addition to the band program. These activities, along with the school work, give the students a well-rounded education. Since Harmony High is having financial difficulties, action must be taken quickly or the state will intervene. The administrations and school boards of Harmony and Preston-Fountain are considering pairing sharing, which would be beneficial to both schools. This proposition has many HHS students concerned; they were allowed to express their views at a meeting with the task force members, the superintendents, and the school board members on November 18. Nothing has been decided yet, and there are many aspects of the situation to consider. Also, if Harmony did pair share with Preston-Fountain, it is not the same as consolidation; it would not be a permanent state. Although Harmony High is having money problems it still is one of the best schools in both academics and extracurricular activities. That's something to be proud of!! The Editors of the annual would like to thank the many members of the annual staff for the work they put in for this year's book. The selling of ads and many hours at the concession stand helped to keep the cost of this year's book down. We would also like to thank our supportive - how's the deadline coming - advisor Mr. Bucholz. His assistance and utmost patience helped to steer us straight in times of disorder. Much of the credit for this year's book goes to the student body of Harmony High School. Their participation in extra curricular activities and sports was great this year. After putting in many grueling hours of work with frustrating times all of the way, we hope you will enjoy reading this year's Cardinal. 88 Sr. Editor Julie, Sr. Editor Eric, Jr. Editor Pat
