The Sophomore waiters and waitresses served the banquet. The main course was ham. Following the banquet, the dance was held. Music was provided by Centre Stage . The gym was decorated beautifully with bright crepe paper, a pond, a waterfall, and a summerhouse with hedges on the floor. The Grand March was led by Ruth Harstad and her date, while the band played the theme song Falling . The night was enjoyed by all. PROM 1978 HOMECOMING The 1978-1979 Homecoming festivities began on Thursday, Sept. 28, with Coronation. Dave Hanlon and Sharon Hansen were voted King and Queen, with Tracy Alfson and Tina Sommer becoming Junior King and Queen. On Friday night the football game was a success with Harmony beating Wykoff 42-0! Afterwards there was a Homecoming dance put on by the Sophomores. Middle Row: K. Kingsley, G. Prinsen, K. Bigalk, D. Anderson. Front Row: B. Trouten, D. Girolamo, T. Schroeder. The Harmony track and field team was short on numbers but not on outstanding performances. Bill Trouten headed the list of outstanding efforts as he broke both pole-vault and high jump marks. He vaulted 12'0 and high jumped 5'10 as he qualified for and placed in the Region 1 meet. Keith Hoopman ran the best mile ever in Harmony High history as he was clocked in a record time of 4:48.8. Keith was also outstanding m the shot-put and discus. Dan Girolamo set a school standard in the 330 yard hurdles and proved to be one of the top high-hurdlers in the district as well. Kerry Kingsley demonstrated his prowess in distance running as he was rarely beaten in the 2-mile and narrowly missed qualifying for the Region 1 meet. Dave Hanlon had a fine year in the pole-vault and high jump until he was injured late in the season. With the graduation of Bill Trouten, Dave figures to be one of the best in the area this coming season in both events. Gary Prinsen and Tony Schroeder had excellent years as 9th and 10th graders on the varsity. Each ran individual events plus making up one half of the mile-relay team that was one of the best in the area. 27 ’78 CARDINAL GOLF TEAM Back Row: Gordon Hanson, Steve Harms, Luther Quanrud, Scott Evenson, Shawn Tornow, Jon Storhoff. Front Row: Joe Morgan, Brian Elton, Ron Busse, Doug Harland, Randy Long, Mark Matson. The 1978 Harmony Cardinal baseball season was not as successful as hoped. The interest and turnout for the team was not very good, so many underclassmen earned a chance to play. Many errors and poor judgement proved to be Harmony's weakness, but solid hitting showed hope for the future. VARSITY VOLLEYBALL Back Row: G. Dornink, K. Junge, S. Harstad, C. Lange, M. Prinsen, K. Scrabeck, S. Hansen. Front Row: Coach Dutcher, C. Storhoff, R. Harstad, C. Storhoff, K. Johannsen, J. Milne. This year the girls began their season fired up and ready to play. They defeated Chatfield, Grand Meadow and Caledonia out of the season. All through the season the girls played well together and gave the opposing team a good fight. The season ended with a 5-8 record. B-SQUAD VOLLEYBALL Back Row: J. Hoag, A. Girolamo, D. Hanson, D. Brunsvold, B. Grooters, Coach Sagan. Middle Row: W. Storhoff, T. Willford, R. Ryan, M. Elton The Harmony Cardinal football team finished their season with an impressive 9-1 record and captured the Maple Leaf Conference Crown as well as the District I Title by defeating Spring Grove 25-0! The Cardinals were underdogs in two games (LeRoy Spring Grove) but came out beating both teams by shutouts. The Cards recorded six straight shutouts in six games, which earned them high ratings in the Minnesota State High School League polls. In the seventh game, Spring Valley scored on Harmony and eventually went on to beat the Cards, dropping them from the polls. Harmony came back to defeat their last three opponents and end their best season ever. It was the first Conference Crown since 1963 and their first District Title ever!!! The young Cards can certainly be proud of the aggressive play of the defense and their disciplined, deliberate offensive attack. These B-Squaders are sure to provide the fans with excellent football as varsity players in the next two years. C-SQUAD UNDEFEATED The Eighth Grade Football team concluded their seven game season with an undefeated record. The explosive offensive line and backs were very capable of putting points on the scoreboard. The aggressive Cardinal defense is one of the best Coach Tribon has had. This season's A-Squad was made up mostly of the older students between grades 9-12 with one senior newcomer, Sharon Hansen, who blessed us all with her previous gymnastic training. The team number rose this year to 21 from last year's 13. With the many experienced girls, the team proved to be strong in both A and B squads. Back again for her second year was Assistant Coach Musolf who helped a great deal with the routines. We thank her and everyone else who helped out at practices and the meets. The team shows promise for the future as our height is returning and our B-squad looks very impressive. 44 COACH TEAM GOT IT Back Row—John Brink, Jon Storhoff, Dave Barrett, Vince Ryan, Brian Johnson, Doug Browning, Coach Rhodes, Front Row—John Nagel, Dale Mandelko, Scott Twait, Jim Nagel, Mike Wilhelm, Rich Russet, Dino Lange RICH BRIAN MIKE DAVE The Harmony Cardinal wrestlers agin showed their strength against their many opponents this year, as they ended the year with a 7-5 record. In December, Harmony held their annual Holiday Tournament. Overall, our Cards placed third, but many individ uals placed in their weight classes. Those placing for Harmony were Rich Russet, Brian Johnson, Dave Barrett, Doug Browning, and Dino Lange. The highlight of the tourney was when Rich Russet was awarded a trophy for most outstanding wrestler. 45 The laughter and the tears—the shadows of misty yesteryears LI’L ABNER MUSICAL D. Barrett, T. Sagan Li'l Abner the Broadway musical comedy hit based on the famous comic strip by Al Capp, was this year's all-school musical. Performances were held on November 4, 5, and 11. The tuneful success tells of the efforts of the simple mountain people of the cartoon strip to save their town from destruction. Washington selects Dogpatch as the most unnecessary place in the nation and plan to move the A-bomb tests there from Nevada unless the citizens prove their town necessary. When Mammy Yokum turns up with her Yokumberry Tonic which made Li'l Abner the superman he is; it would appear that Dogpatch is saved. General Bullmoose has other ideas about this situation as he is eager to enhance his sizeable fortune by getting his hands on the formula. The folks from Dogpatch foil his plan and turn Washington upside-down and inside out. It took a lot of patience and hard work to put this production together. Many thanks to all. ONE ACT PLAY Nobody Sleeps is a comedy in which each of the three daughters and their mother criticize the bungling ways of a would-be burglar whom the youngest girl discovers rummaging through the desk when she comes down for a sandwich late at night. A breezy concotion that leaves Spike, the burglar, all broken up and the audience all broken down laughing. Preston, Peterson, Spring Valley, and Harmony competed in the one act play contest on January 20, 1979. The first two were the winners for competing in the district contest. Many new members joined at the beginning of the year, so we had a nice sized group to work with. Our biggest money making project was the raffling off of the afghan, which was made by the efforts of many. We also did some public service activities. The District Convention was one of the biggest events of the year. It was a memorable day, much worth the weeks of preparation. Laura Whalen received the honor of being voted District President. We'd like to thank Mrs. Ofstedal and the others who supported FHA throughout the 1978-1979 Cardinal year. AMERICA JUNIOR FHA—Back Row: Advisor—Mrs. Sagan, B. Brunsvold, J. Cremer, J. Kingsley, R.
