the 1973 cardinal of harmony high school 3 the pathway of life leads wherever we may choose. 17 life does not go backward treading on familiar ground, but ever moving onward. 31 together, we set out to conquer the world. 45 • we must learn to take life as it comes, one step at a time. 53 together we lay the foundation for the road of life. 71 lead on, show us how to challenge life’s winding trail. The blow was hard; the shock servere; We never thought death was so near. Only those who have lost can tell, The pain of parting without farewell, She little thought when leaving home That she soon in death would sleep. And leave us here to mourn. You are not forgotten, Liz, Nor will you ever be. As long as life and memory last. We will remember thee. We miss you now, our hearts are sore, As time goes on, we miss you more, Your loving smile, Your gentle face, No one else can fill your place. 2 peggy barrett ‘Maybe men aren’t perfect, but they’re the only opposite sex we’ve got.” Cardeon 4: FHA 3.4; Glee Cl. 1.2; GRA 1.2.3,4. debra brusse Don't lead me; I know where I'm going. However, actual festivities began on September 28 with a formal coronation in the new gym. Mary Harstad and Paul Stevens were crowned Queen and King by Deb Lange and Jim Harstad, last years royalty. Jan Roelofs and Lee Bigalk gave talks describing what Homecoming was like five and ten years ago, respectively. Following the coronation, a pep rally and bonfire was held at the athletic field. The evening ended with a snake dance to the water tower. At the tower, several speeches were given by the Royalty. The parade was held Friday afternoon. The follwoing floats were awarded prizes: the seniors first place, juniors were awarded second, and the freshman received third. In addition to the floats and royalty, the band and girl scouts participated in the parade. Friday night the Cards battled against the Cards from LeRoy-Os-trander, defeating them by a score of 12-6. The junior class worked many long, hard hours and weeks to make our class play Love Rides the Rails” a huge success, with many incidents our class will never forget. A little background on the play is that it’s a melodrama comedy, involving the Harmony, Canton, Mabel Railroad. It schemes for the wicked villains to get the railroad and the girl (Prudence), but little do the innocent heroes know what stands in store for them—namely Carlotta Cortez, Simon Darkway and Dirk Sneath. Leave to the heroes Truman Pendennis and Prudence to save the Harmony, Canton, Mabel Railroad and bring everything back to order. After our last performance most of the cast traveled to Decorah where we ate a tasty meal and left our mark before we journied home again. graduation 1973 To the strains of ‘‘Pomp and Circumstances , 59 seniors marched through the Harmony High School auditorium for commencement. “The Ocean of Life lies before us, the eyes of the future are upon us, for now is the time to move on, was the theme selected by the Seniors. Mr. Ause commented on some of the history of graduating classes. Deb Voigt, Senior class president, awarded Mr. Houdek a special gift in appreciation for service to their class. Mrs. Ruby (ones presented Mrs. Marian Fish-baugher a gift for her years of service on the school board. Following the presentation of the gifts and speeches, Mr. Elmo Dahl, president of the school board, presented the Seniors with their diplomas and thus, closing the final chapter of six years at HHS. The play consisted of fourteen individual sketches about tumbling American life. Each sketch was complete in itself, but they were all tied together by Thurber’s unmistakeable style, which is usually referred to as Thurberesque”. Through his subtle humor and satire, Thurber gives you an opportunity to laugh at our fellow human beings by depicting their various situations comically. The situations were all recognized and associated with, for many of the audience have encountered similar circumstances in their own lives. John Bellingham and Deb Voigt were voted best actor and actress by the members of the cast. The Senior class presented “A Thurber Carnival on April 6 and 7. 82 a thurber carnival V basketball The spring sports season was somewhat shortened with all the bad weather. The basketball team finished the season by only having four losses against their record. In tournament play Harmony defeated Caledonia and was then defeated by a strong team from Peterson. A new addition to the golf team this year was Deb Saxe, the first girl to play on the team. Randy Sikkink was the only golfer who qualified for the Regional Tournament in Rochester. Bob Smedsrud qualified for the Region Track meet at Albert Lea. He ran in the 440-yard dash against some very strong competition and was defeated. In January, the seniors ordered the announcements from Jostens. In keeping with their class colors, the announcements have burgandy numbers and sheild. In the fall, seventh, eight, and ninth grade students busily set out going from door to door to sell magazine subscriptions. The seventh grade proved to be the best salesmen, thus winning day off from school for a class picnic. Individual prizes were awarded according to the number of magazines each sold. Everyone has been intrigued with the video tape machine which was purchased this year. After Mr. Elstad demonstrated it at the Christmas party, it was put to use filming basketball games and wrestling meets. Senior home economics girls played host to preschool youngsters several days a week for about five weeks. The nursery school gave them practical experience in the guidance and care of young children. These guys came back this year with a lot of experience and enthusiasm, as well as the makings of a team. The Harmony track team had the misfortune of only getting a total of 15 guys out for the season. Most of these boys were rookies, but the veterans aided them to a respectable season record. Mr. Rhodes, their coach, did a great job and boosted their egoes. The golf team, led by Randy Sikkink, finished the season with a 2-4 conference record and captured 7th place in the district. They began conference play with an exciting victory over rival Preston Bluejays and continued to establish a winning year. The few losses that the Cards did encounter came by very small margins to tough teams. The Cards played host to the Holiday Tournament which featured Caledonia, LaCresent, Preston, and Harmony. Defense was stressed by Coach Elston as the Cards consistently held their opponents to low scores. Congratulations on your fabulous year! 1st Row: Bob Smedsrud. Dean Cates. Sam Morem. Darrell Bates. The Cardinals were undefeated in conference dual meets, winning impressively over strong LeRoy Cardinal and Chatfield Gopher squads. Several new schools were added to our schedule this season. The Cards took on Rochester Lourdes and Plainview, beating both of the teams by a huge margin. Last Summer, the band started the year by taking a bus to Bloomington to march at the Lions Parade. In mid June, we took Cresco by surprise and marched off with first place at their Dairy Days. We headed to Rushford one week later for the Fillmore County Dairy Days where we captured third place. We ended our marching at the Steam Engine Days in Mabel. Our fall, winter, and spring concerts turned out to be a huge success with new innovations being tried. Our faithful pep band provided pep and music for the football and basketball teams. In the past, only the editors did the selection of pictures, layouts, and story copy. Ten of the staff were selected as business managers and were responsible for collecting money from our sponsors and selling the yearbook to students. We also are associated with a different publishing company this year, Paragon Yearbooks. After many hours of dreaming, planning, and working, the 1973 “Cardinal” became a reality. It consists of class news, club news, gossip, editorials, and book reviews. Often it contains poems, jokes, or stories. The staff exchanged newspapers with other schools to gain new ideas. Sometimes these ideas were used in our paper. The student body usually responded favorably to these. All the people involved, especially the staff, have worked hard to make “The Cardeon” a better publication. 1st Row: Kathy Caldwell, ed.; Deb Brusse. ed.; Linda Hovey. assist, ed.; Deb Engle, assist, ed. 2nd Row: Rachel Harstad, Robin Barnes, Susie Hanson, )anelle Harland, Gerri Ward, Jo Wiltgen, Lynn Fos-sum, Mary Harstad. Halloween the members had a taffy pull and carved pumpkins which we then gave to the Harmony Nursing Home. Once again this year we had a special Christmas dinner of spaghetti and ground beef, which was enjoyed by all attending. At the February meeting, we had a Valentines party. Our big spring activity was taking a trip. We had several money-making projects this year. All members baked cookies, cakes, bread, bars, or other edible goodies for our bake sale in December. Also, the F.H.A. served at several basketball games and wrestling meets. In the spring, we had a group project of selling stationary. The money we earned from these projects will be used for paying off the dishwasher in the Home Ec. Dept, and purchasing a plaque in memory of Elizabeth Stevens. 1st Row: Deb Voigt. Pres.: Kim Bigalk. Members sold fruit, rat bait, and gardenseeds to earn money which was used for the annual banquet, supplies, and trips. Rick Fick and Ron Sherburne, District officers, were present for the initiation of the Greenhands, and presentation of the Chapter Sweetheart, Lynn Fossum. A number of boys participated in judging contests of Meat, General Livestock, and Dairy. This provided valuable experience for these members. Bob Smedsrud, a senior, spent a week last summer at a national F.F.A. Seminar in Washington, D.C. There he toured various governmental buildings and met several elected Congressmen. The G.R.A. is divided into two separate groups, being the Sr. G.R.A. and the Jr. G.R.A. Both groups have about the same schedule, but the Sr. G.R.A. has more activities than the Jr. group. We compete with other schools in such sports as flag football, gymnastics, soccer, golf, volleyball, basketball, softball, and track and field. Each month we had a fun activity such as bowling, swimming, skiing, overnight in the gym, and a camp out. We had a very successful and enjoyable year in G.R.A. under the leadership of our advisor.
