Text from Pages 1 - 88 of the 1972 volume:

As editors of the 1972 CARDINAL, we feel that the following poem by Robert Frost illustrates the choices we, as graduating seniors must make. THE ROAD NOT TAKEN Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth. Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that, the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning eaually lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh! I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. We wish all of you the best of luck in making life's decisions. from THE POETRY OF ROBERT FROST Edited by Edward Connery Lathem. Copyright 1916, (c) 1969, by Holt, Rinehart, Winston, Inc. Juniors and Seniors flocked to the banquet room, which carried out the theme, Tahitian Holiday”. Thirteen sophomores waited on tables. They were, as shown below: Kandace Hovey, Pat Michel, John Bellingham, JoAnn Wiltgen, Paul Stevens, Janell Schrock, Dean Erickson, Mary Harstad, Rusty Barnes, Diana Jetson, Mike Anderson, Deb Saxe, and Lynette Fossum. HOLIDAY A welcome was given by the Jr. class president, Jim Harstad, and Dennis Schrock, the Sr. class president, replied with a Thank-you. Dennis Berg read the prophecy, Dawn Heusinkveld read the will, and Della Jetson read the history. After the banquet, the formally clad juniors and seniors retreated to the gym to dance to Merle Knutson's band. The traditional Grand March was led by the junior and senior class presidents and their dates. HOMECOMING 1 1 f ▼ v— -Jl'A After a long week of getting floats ready, the Homecoming festivities of Harmony High School began on September 23, The Thursday evening activities began with the bonfire being held at the athletic field. Coronation followed with Deb Lange and Jim Harstad becoming King and Queen. This was followed by a snake dance ending at the watertower. Of course, Thursday evening included the traditional hauling out of the underclassmen giving them a scenic view of the area, if they weren't blindfolded. The parade was held on Friday afternoon. In the float division the freshmen were awarded first, seniors second, and eighth grade third. In addition to the floats and the royalty, the band, girl scouts, and boy scouts also participated in the parade which proceeded down main street. Friday night the Cards entered the battlefield against the Chatfield Gophers. The game ended with the victorious Cards winning by a suspenseful 8-6 score. After the game, a dance was held in the gym. The Pages provided the rock music. 20 JUNIOR CLASS PLAY The Cast El Gallo .......................... Robert Smedsrud Luisa .............................. There is a boy, a girl, their fathers, a Spanish gentleman, two ancient actors, and a wall. It seems to be very little, but it is The Fantasticks. Presented by the junior class on November 19 and 20, this was a unique experience for Harmony High, for it was a musical. After waiting many weeks for the books to come, the cast and three pianists began several weeks of practice under the direction of Miss Ripp. With the help of the accompianists, the cast learned their songs which really added to the play. Although it was a lot of work, practices were filled with many memories and funny moments. 23 BUTTER ON Row I: Joan Hovey, Connie Michel, Greg Applen, Shawn Bartsh, Rick Johnson, Sharon Applen, Kurt Harstad, Deb Lange, Curt Hendrickson, and Deb Hanson. The first public appearance of our senior choir was on December 12 at the Christmas concert. On Monday December 20, our choir performed for half an hour on KROC TV 10. We were among ten choirs to sing programs of Christmas music. On Jan. II, the choir sang as a solo choir at the School Board Convention in Minneapolis. Guests included Governor CHORUS First Row: Sheila Sikkink, Deb Hoag, Randy Kraling, Mark Kissinger, Sherrie Wilson, Deb Saxe, Laurel Stoskoph, Joleen Schrock, Deb Lange. On Feb. 16, the choir sang for 45 minutes at the Music Educators Convention at the Radison Hotel in Minneapolis. During Lent, our choir sang at some of the surrounding churches. Our spring concert was a smashing success. Hence, once again, the choir under the direction of Mrs. Ause represented Harmony well. SENIOR First Row: Shelley Ewalt, Sheila Sikkink. Our band had a better year than usual this year. It started off last summer with the band marching in two parades, one in Spring Valley and the other in Cresco. In the fall, we marched at the Steam Engine Days Parade at Mabel. At various times during the year, the band gave concerts which were enjoyed by all. One of these was a rock concert presented to the student body. Members of the band wore weird outfits for the occasion, especially Jim Harstad who found someone's skirt. At the home games, the pep band provided music. The band, along with the chorus, sold candy around the community in the fall. 46 BAND First Row: Kris Kraling, Denise Kiehne, Polly Siklcinlc. Each of the members helped at least one teacher by correcting tests and quizzes, making bulletin boards, or actual teaching. Several girls helped at the elementary school, also. In March, Mr. Schams talked to us, giving some helpful hints for our future college life. We finished our short year with a picnic. 49 First row: Janelle Schrock, assistant editor, Sharilyn Thoreson, editor, Joan Hovey, editor, and Deb Tammel. assistant editor. After attending a School Paper and Annual Convention in September, the editors and assistant editors returned to try to apply their new ideas to our Cardeon. Because the paper is relatively small, some of the best ideas were impractical. The staff published several more issues than in the past few years. They were informative, entertaining, and sometimes thought provoking. Underclassmen really put a lot of work into the paper this year. They were inexperienced, but have learned by doing and hope to have an even better year next year. STUDENT COUNCIL First Row: Don Bellingham, Parlimentarian, Curt Hendrickson, Trees., Kurt Harstad. Activities that were sponsored by the Student Council this past year included: two dances, Hat Day, Clash Day, Earth Day, Student Exchange with Mable-Canton, and selling of car streamers. They also started a project for next year: making mascots out of plywood. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY First Row: Sharon Applen, Jan Schrock, and Kandis Scheevel. The season got off to a slow start due to a very difficult schedule and inexperienced guys. Our matmen improved considerably as the season went on, losing only one meet after Christmas to a strong Decorah team. The Cards compiled a 7-6 season record after a thrilling victory over Chatfield. Harmony finished with a fourth place at District I tournaments with Dick Johnson, John Whalen, and Dan Ryan advancing to the Regional. In the Regions, Harmony placed tenth among 47 competing schools. Individual placings were: Dick Johnson 3rd, and John Whalen 5th. Dick Johnson was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the Year by his fellow teammates. This year's team finished with an impressive 18-6 record. The regular season started with a victory over Spring Grove and ended with an unforgettable last second thriller over Preston, to place second in the Maple Leaf Conference. Tournament time came, and our Cards met the challenge in impressive form, snagging rebounds and swishing shots. Under the expert guidance of Coach Elston, the team went all the way to win the first District I championship since 1945. Mayo Civic Auditorium was the site where Harmony marched on the floor, performed their entertaining warm-ups, and showed their dominance over the defending champion, Preston. As District I champs, we went on to Regional to meet a strong, fast-moving Red Wing team from District 3, but we fail to find a winning combination. Ml LET’S HEAR IT Connie Michel, Deb Lange, Deb Engle, Mary Harstad, Jan Sehrock, Shawn Bartsh, Gret:hen Harms, Sharon Applen, and Polly Sikkink The cheerleader's were very busy trying to earn money to send Deb Lange and Mary Morgan to a cheerleading camp. They came back with many new ideas. The rest of the summer was spent practicing. Football went by very fast; then came basketball and wrestling. Instead of two separate squads, both junior high and senior high girls alternated between the two sports. Several highlights were the cheerleading clinic in Rochester, Holiday Tournaments, District Tournaments, and many thrilling games and meets.
