Hke m3 fiancUttaC ScAool ‘irwwtottty ‘7ftt4Me4ofa — .1 'ijf r With sincere appreciation, we, the students of Harmony High School, dedicate the 1963 CARDINAL to Mrs. Rena Ingersoll, librarian and English teacher. During most of her life she has been working with young people in the classroom and in extracurricular activities. She has taught everyone associated with her the importance of self-reliance and initiative. With a limited amount of time for herself, she has never refused to help anyone who has needed her assistance. She has also given herself and time to the betterment of our community. To you, Mrs. Ingersoll, we dedicate this book as our thank you for the many things you have done for us. 4 dmirndfoatuM, MM MR. ALLEN Get reedy tor a test tomorrow.' Social Studies. The twelve-member body Student Council under the excellent guidance of their advisors, Mr. Houdek and Mr. Meule-mans, accomplished a great deal for the benefit of the student body this year. These achievements dealt with major adjustments as well as solutions for many insignificant problems brought before them. The successful year of the school's governing body began with the revision and distribution of the student handbook. Providing each member of the student body with a copy of the handbook was an important change from previous years when only new students received a copy. The Council again supported the annual magazine drive which was sponsored by grades seven, eight, and nine. Proceeds from the drive went to the band uniform, Cardinal, and stage curtain funds. Their only money-raising project of the year was the sponsorship of the Christmas Party on December 19. A new system was devised for honoring outstanding students when the Student Council adopted a plan for a Boy and Girl of the Month Club. The selected students received a Certificate of Honor stating the qualifications for which they were chosen. The Student Council would like to thank the student body for their loyalty and active co-operation. Student ( ouncct O ice Left to right, seated: Jed Thorson. vice-president; Mary Miller, president. Leave It to Miss Gardner was a hilarious comedy centering around the everyday lives and problems in an average high school, Pembroke High. The trouble begins when Jane Gardner, a young college graduate, comes to share the guidance office with the men's guidance counselor, and confirmed bachelor, Mr. Gordon Warren. The remainder of the play is an account of how the guidance counselors try to solve the students' various problems together. The scene is the jury room in the Criminal Courts Building. The time is shortly after the last arguments have been given in The State vs. Julie Fletcher, accused of first-degree murder. The jury has retired to the jury room where they have just elected their foreman. The Jury Room was a dramatic play spiced with humor which was presented on April 5 and 6. During the play, the jury tries to answer the question, Is a sweet young girl capable of murdering her own uncle? The verdict seems obvious until a succession of unusual discoveries provides a surprise ending to a fascinating play. Editor Diane Jacobson, with the assistance of Co-editor Karolyn Kraling and the advice of Miss Kramer and Mr. Grover, has attempted to issue the Cardeon every two weeks. The task was a difficult one; however, the staff did a good job providing a unique school paper. The Cardeon as always offered an opportunity for students with creative ability and interest to gain practical experience in the field of journalism. The staff has worked diligently and has displayed a good deal of talent through their original write-ups. The 1962-63 Cardeon served well as an excellent medium of knowledge, discussion, evaluation and publicity. The staff would like to think that the Cardeon has been a source of pleasure for the students. 38 Left to right, seated: Diane Jacobson, editor; Karolyn Kraling, assistant editor. Although few of the students have had the direct pleasure of putting it out, all f you may join in the pleasure of owning a yearbook. Early in the year plans were started for the 1963 Cardinal. The co-editors, Mary Miller and Sharyn Matson, put much time and effort into this book. It is the sincere wish of the staff that you cherish and enjoy this book now and for many years to come. andcKCii £cUt i Left to right, seated: Sharyn Matson and Mary Miller, editors. Although Harmony didn't retain the conference championship, we did manage to bring our string of consecutive undefeated games to 34 before falling to Chatfield. Losing to Lanesboro, 7-6, for our homecoming was Harmony's most heartbreaking game. For the first time in many years, the Cardinals were kept scoreless while suffering a 7-0 loss at the hands of Preston. Two members of the squad, Roger Schrock and Chuck Berning, were named to the Maple Leaf All-Conference Team and six received honorable mention. Chuck Berning was voted Harmony's most valuable player by his teammates. The season's record of 4-3-1 shows that this was a successful year for the Harmony eleven. ‘Vanaittf cu et ait Left to right. With a 6-4 conference record, Harmony was third in the Maple Leaf Conference. Season play started out fast with a 62-41 victory over the Winona Winhawks. Harmony continued at this clip until they met Lanesboro; here they were stopped with their fi rst defeat of the season. One week later Chatfield handed the Cards their second defeat. The Cards then won six games, one a 49-40 revenge over Lanesboro, and another a highlight of the season, a 101-53 victory over Spring Valley. Top school scoring records were set in the game: the most points scored by a Harmony team in one game, and the most points scored by one individual when Keith Asleson dumped in 46 points. Harmony's hopes for a share of the conference crown were smashed by a 59-57 defeat from Chatfield. Harmony won 2 of the three remaining conference games, losing one unexpectedly to a determined Preston five. After winning two games in tournament play, Harmony lost to the Chatfield Gophers in the semifinals. The Cards roared back in the final game to take third place in District One by defeating Rushford. Keith Asleson and Chuck Berning were named to the Maple Leaf All-Conference Team, and Bill Wickett was placed on the second team. The record is proof that Harmony enjoyed another successful season. 55 'Van itcf 7Vie4tCi iy Left to right, Row I: John Engle. Bing Brokken. Chuck Hoiness, Gary Nagel. The matmen started the season well and won eight meets in a row before dropping a disputed loss to Grand Meadow. They began again where they left off and won their last four meets by large margins. When the Conference Tournament came around, the Cards showed power by walking away with the crown. Buzz Matson, Dave Engle, and Lynn Easier finished the season undefeated. We feel that OBI Music Room could more accurately be titled our Multi-Purpose Room. Here music lessons were given. Student Council and FTA meetings were held, and the Annual was constructed. Our CARDINAL attempts to portray work and play together and includes a small portion of all the events throughout the year. Assemblies, Homecoming, research papers, class plays, cramming for tests, games, record hops, first hours — these and a dozen more activities form a pattern year after year. The Annual records these things and is finally complete as it reaches the hands of the students. We present the '63 CARDINAL with the hope that in its contents you will find pleasant memories of friends and events. 59 Sfto t4 n4, Preston Creamery Association W. A.
