f pages 5-8 pages 19-38 pages 9-18 pages 39-46 As editors of the 1962 Cardinal, we, Sonja Felland and Linda Hardy, would like to express our sincere thanks to those persons who have helped to make this annual a successful reality. To our advisor, Mrs. Thiesfeld, who has devoted many hours of work and guidance to our special project; Edstrom’s Studio and Mr. Alf who gave his assistance and advice to “the cause”; Mr. Tarras for his excellent photography; the W. A. Fisher Company, the publishers of our yearbook; Mrs. Ingersoll for editing the copy; our fine annual staff for their wonderful efforts and cooperation; and all the Harmony area businessmen who gave their financial support; we extend our warmest expressions of gratitude. 2 ivu We proudly dedicate the Cardinal of 1962 to our superintendent, Mr. Ause. With his unceasing efforts he has enabled our school to progress continuously in order to meet the rising standards of modern education. Hiring fine teachers, guiding our school in her material and educational accomplishments, and fulfilling the numerous tasks required of the eminent office of superintendent are included among his many accomplishments. Mr. Ause, formerly from Preston, Minnesota, received his B.A. degree from St. Olaf and his M.A. degree from the University of Minnesota. While attending St. Olaf, he sang in the world famous St. Olaf Choir for three years and toured the United States extensively. He taught music in several Minnesota and Wisconsin communities before going into school administration. His first superintendency was at Onalaska, Wisconsin. He spent four years in the army, part of this time being spent as a music director. Following his army career, he became superintendent at Askov, Minnesota and then came to Harmony in 1951. He has been active not only in local, community, and church affairs, but also in state activities. He was elected to the State Board of Control in 1958 of which he is presently President. Because of the many things you have done for our school, we wish to dedicate this annual to you, Mr. Ause. 3 George E. Many of our singers were able to take voice lessons and sing in small vocal groups under the instruction of Mrs Zoe Ann Ahrahamson. The halls of Harmony High School have been brightened by you, Erna, our Finnish foreign student. The school and community have enjoyed having you participate in our school, civic, and church activities. We hope this yearbook will bring back fond and cherished memories of your year in Harmony. You have brought about an exchange of friendship and culture between our nations which has furthered the cause of world understanding. Our dearest hope is that you will return to us some day for a visit and that your year in the United States will be one you will enjoy recalling often throughout a long, happy, and useful life in Finland. Under the efficient guidance of our principal. Mr. Houdek. and with the fine leadership of our president. Tom Brokken, the Student Council gave effective leadership to the student body. The council had the pleasure of having as an honorary member, Frna Carlson, our foreign exchange student from Finland. The first activity of the year was the distributing of the revised Student Handbook to the new students in our high school. Our next big activity was the magazine drive. More money was taken in this year than in any previous year. The money was used to buy stage curtains. The council participated in the Homecoming festivities by entering a float in the parade. We decorated the halls and sponsored the Christmas party in celebration of the Yuletide season. A few other projects were the purchase and sale of new book covers 25 bearing the school name; the mascot, which appeared at the athletic events; the new flag on the stage; the high school elections; and fund-raising for the foreign student. The 1962 Cardeon staff consisted of 40 students whose tasks were broken down into seven categories: art, floating, mimeo-graphers, news reporters, sports reporters, stencilists, and typists. Special editors were: sports, Don Haugen; art, Phyllis Masters; exchange, Arlys Berning; floating, Jerry Vasts and Joan Anderson. The assignments were given out at the beginning of each month, and the editors hoped that all assignments would be in on time so that the paper might meet its deadline on the last day of the month. The paper consisted of senior interviews, sports and activities news, and feature articles. When the “Cardeon” was completed at the end of each month, the editors and the staff released a sigh of relief and pride, and . then began another issue of the “Cardeon.” (L at A eon C Left to right, SEATED: Diane Jacobson, assistant editor; and Marilyn Morem, editor. The play, a comedy, centered around the escapades of the Carol family in a small midwestern city. Howard Carol, the father and advisor at the local bank, found more trouble than he bargained for when he made a speech on manners at the local high school. His youngest daughter, Ginger misconstrued his speech and tried out for the boys’ football team. This caused quite an uproar in the ordinarily straight laced town and Ginger received national notoriety. Cast Howard Carol...........Fred Frogner Agnes Carol ...... A telegram arrives, which they quickly discover is false — but the discovery comes too late for them to escape from the place where malign people threaten their lives. Bailey, the relative of most of them, has disappeared. They question all the others, whom they scarcely know whether to trust or fear. They struggle to solve the mystery of the place, the cabinet door that is death to open; the hooded figure; the ghost and the monster that appear from time to time — and back of it all the insistent, dull throbbing signal of the drums. Yet, to break the tension, there is the crackle of laughter at the absurdities of the sheriff and the sauciness of Amelia, and there is warmth and glow of romance that develops in spite of the sunless terror of the place. The peppy Juniors have been busy with many activities this past year. In October, we ordered our class rings which were, of course, the best ever. Our first really big project for the year was the enjoyable presentation of our play, ‘‘Drums of Death. on .November 3 and 4. Many of us were members of various activities such as hand, chorus, and other clubs. Several of our boys thrilled to playing on the football team which has gone undefeated for the past four years. Others participated in basketball, baseball, wrestling, and track; The most important event of the year was, as always, the junior banquet and prom, held in May. Although the past year has been filled with many happy memories, we an. anticipating an educational and fun-filled future as Seniors of ’63. 48 Left to right, SEATED: Linda Mensink, vice president; Carolyn Evenson, president. Our class president, Jeff Soma, has led us into many enjoyable activities such as Beginners’ Band. Junior Band. Junior Science Club. Several boys participated in “C” squad football, and Bill Barrett represented our class on the “B” team. Seventh grade is the get-acquainted year for each class.
