In the fall, we presented our successful class play, Galahad Jones.” We ordered our class rings in November. When they arrived, everyone felt that they were the best ever seen in H.H.S. Many of our boys helped our football team win its third championship. Others participated in basketball, baseball, wrestling, and track. Several were members of band, chorus, and other clubs. The spring banquet and prom, held the evening of May 6 with all its hours of planning and secretive hard work, was the glamorous highlight of our year. This has been an eventful year for us, but we look ahead to an even better one as we begin our final year as the seniors of ’62. 20 SapJwsnoAei Left to right, Row 1: Joan Anderson, Carolyn Applen, Barb Berg. Our sophomore class is one of the smaller classes at H.H.S., but this does not hinder our being very active in school activities. We proved this by sponsoring a very successful homecoming in I960. Eleven of our members are in senior band, and fifteen in chorus. Mary Miller is a senior cheerleader and Bill Wickctt, Gary Nagel, and Chuck Berning represent us well in varsity sports. Many others also participate on B” squads. We are active in F.H.A. and F.F.A. The newly organized G.R.A. is happy to be represented so well by the sophomore girls. The year has ended, but we are anticipating that our junior year will be filled with even more pleasant memories. Left to right, SEATED: Jerry Vagts, president; Mary Lackey, vice-president. Many of the boys were on the B” squads of football and basketball. Greg Hulcher represented us on the A” football squad. Several boys were also in wrestling, baseball, and track. Several of the girls participated in activities such as Junior F.H.A., and the Cardinal Staff. We were represented in the Student Council by Rita Bigalk and Sybil Thompson. Karen Lind was a junior cheerleader. Later in the year we sponsored our first all-school party, the Senior Farewell. We can all agree that this has been a year full of excitement and fun, and we are looking forward to our approaching Sophomore year at H.H.S.! 22 Qla e. After the annual (and painful!) auditions, the H.H.S. band was ready for business. We had marching or pep band at all except two football games. After Homecoming we started work on our fall pop concert. The light, popular music was appreciated by everyone who attended. This year the band took part in the Christmas Festival by playing a few special numbers, and also for the hymn-sing. The Brass Choir also accompanied a few numbers. The Student Council again gave active leadership in many worthy activities. The annual student handbook was published and distributed at the beginning of the school year. The Council sponsored the magazine drive held in the fall, the money earned being given to the foreign student project, the stage curtain fund and the Cardinal fund. They decorated the halls at Christmas and sponsored the Christmas party. They set up a schedule for school parties and a list for selling at basketball games. They were responsible for having the starting line-up announced at basketball games. Other worthy projects for which they were responsible were: setting-up of various elections; purchase of new book covers bearing the school name; arranging for a mascot for next year’s football games; and a continuing interest in a foreign student for '6l-'62. Many small but important jobs are accomplished by the Council which go unnoticed, but the student body has shown their appreciation by their loyalty and active cooperation. The Cardeon staff of forty-four students worked very hard this year to compile a larger and more interesting publication for the student body. The 1960-61 staff was divided into seven work groups: art, sports, reporters, typists, stencilists, mimeographers and special editors. Mrs. Thiesfeld was our advisor, with Geraldine Kiehne and Marilyn Morem as editor and assistant editor. The end of each month found the staff very busy making the last minute additions and corrections before the mimeograph went into action. It is always with a sense of relief, as well as pride, that the staff begins distribution of another issue of the Cardeon. The seniors of 1961 came through again this year by putting on two excellent performances of their play. The subject of the play. The Night of January Sixteenth, was a murder trial. It had the unusual feature of recruiting twelve persons from the audience to serve on the jury. These persons were not planted, but chosen professionally. With the largest cast ever, the seniors worked very well together to make the play a big success that will not be forgotten for many years. Karen Andre.............. District Attorney Flint .... Donald The Junior Class presented their three act comedy, Galahad Jones” on November 4 and 5, I960, under the direction of Mr. Keith Schwager. This teen-age story was greatly enjoyed by the many who attended the performances. Tommy Jones is a teen-ager who dreams and wishes for the days when knighthood was in flower. His parents, sisters, and friends become somewhat disgusted with the way he acts, but they humor him, and because Tommy is always acting like a knight and trying to be chivalrous they give him the name Galahad Jones. He tries to help their maid's sister-in-law, and in so doing he discovers the gang that has been hi-jacking truck loads of cigarettes for the past few months. Because of this he receives several large rewards, and his family and friends Anally take him seriously. During Mr. Gunderson's three-year reign as head football coach at Harmony, he has had three championship teams, a nearperfect record of 22 victories, no losses and one tie.
