DEDICATION We, the editors of the 1954-55 Cardinal, present this book to you, the seniors, in the hope that it has pictured, accurately and clearly, the trends of your high school years. We hope that you will always remember your favorite classes, the social highlights, detention hours after school, spirited pep-fests, building passes, the noon and four o'clock rushes, stacked lockers, play practices, extra-curricular activities, and your friends made and treasured. Let the turning of each page return to mind memories of an unforgettable era— your HIGH SCHOOL DAZE. Under the direction of Gordon Peterson, the instrumental department has made great progress this year. If you were on the streets any time and heard the familiar left, right, left, right, and shrill whistle; it was no doubt the marching band. In addition to preparing for the Harmony Homecoming this year, the marching band spent much of its time practicing for the Decorah Homecoming. Mr. Peterson spends most of his time in the band room with the beginner's band, junior band, senior band, or individual lessons. Also, Mr. Peterson has organized and worked with the brass sextet and flute quartet, in addition to the brass quartet, trombone trio, trombone quartet, clarinet quartet, saxophone quartet, and the cornet trio. He also organized a joint concert with Canton and a spring and winter concert. All together, this year has been very successful. JUNIOR BAND—Row I, left to right: B. Matson, C. Harmon, B. Hoiness, J. Brunsvold Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday you hear, from fhe bandroom, fhe voices of sixfy-five senior chorus members under fhe direction of Mr. Gordon Peterson. Highlighting the year's appearance was the impressive Christmas program. The senior chorus members entered the auditorium in a processional, while the junior chorus sang Christmas carols. Soloists for the senior chorus were Shirley Klingsheim and Stafford Storhoff. A vocal solo was also sung by Mr. Reginald Torrison of Luther College. Another big event for vocal students was the annual music festival held at Chatfield. The senior chorus sang O Lord We Worship Thee and The Ash Grove . Numbers were also sung by the small vocal groups. The senior chorus was also represented at the annual Dorian Festival held at Luther College. The festival chorus was under the direction of Mr. Don Craig, who is the director of the Bell Telephone Hour. Dorian members were Shirley Klingsheim, Monica Haugerud, Stafford Storhoff, and Robert Miller. Other high school vocal groups which made several appearances during the year were the Girl's Sextet, Girl's Trio, Mixed Quartet, and Double Mixed Quartet. GIRL'S GLEE CLUB—Row I, loft to right: M. When grandmother was in high school, she probably never heard of a school newspaper. Well, she can't imagine what she missed—the Cardeon doesn't miss a thing. School life is depicted in write-ups on dances, humor columns, student polls, features, editorials, and sports summaries. Fingers fly over the typewriters incessantly, typing the copy submitted by the staff of reporters and columnists. The Cardeon Staff produced and published a school paper each month. A new plan of organization was devised this year by having an editor-in-chief, Geraldine Roche, and page editors. These editors were Paul Sanden, Marion Biel, David Jones, LaRita Trouten, Kay Armstrong and LeEtta Gleisner. Other editors for the paper were Pat Stork, Karen Haugen and Richard Ratcliff. Our able faculty advisor was Mr. Smelser. CARDEON EDITOR—Geraldine Roche; ADVISOR—Mr. Smelser. CARDINAL STAFF Row I, left to right: A. Lyndahl, L. Trouten, L. Manning. B. Copeman, C. Berge. S. From room 201 there comes a fragrance of rubber cement fumes, the pounding of typewriters, vociferous discussions, questions like— Hey, where on earth did the pictures for page 46 go? — Please, someone, get a brainstorm, how shall we lay out this page? or Where's the dummy? —as everyone mechanically spins around. Amid all this general noise and confusion, tne 1955 Cardinal is born. The annual staff was composed of an energetic set of students who were never sure of their specific role on the staff. They all acquired experience in mapping out the dummy, writing copy, and being assistant editors of every section. With the help of our advisor, Mr. Smelser, and editors, Sylbert Kunkat and Shirley Klingsheim, things were set in motion in the fall. By spring, the puzzle of words and pictures were assembled and sent to press. CO-EDITORS, Shirley Klingsheim, Sylbert Kunkat; ADVISOR, Mr. Smelser. It's Great To Be Crazy” The junior class play, a three-act comedy, entitled It's Great To Be Crazy , was presented under the direction of Mr. R. Anderson on November 19th. The story starts when Betty Lou Maxwell writes a letter to a company that looks up family trees. The reply arrives but Mr. Maxwell opens it. According to the letter, his ancestors have been low, shady characters that usually go crazy about the age of forty. By the time a letter comes explaining that the first was a mistake, everything is in an awful muddle. But the letter explains everything and all ends well. The cast is as follows: Betty Lou Maxwell Pat Buchholtz Bernadine ............... Catherine Love Connie Maxwell LaRita Trouten Wilbur Maxwell .......... Garren Benson Janet Maxwell ........................ Pat Jones Hercules Nelson ........ William Brokken Aunt Mary Emily Todd John Maxwell .................. John Young Mrs. Jennings .......... In Harmony High it is made possible through the Student Council. Among the many activities in which the council was engaged this year were sponsoring school parties, choosing lyceum programs, revising the point system and making a student handbook. Student Council members feel that it is a privilege and an honor to represent their classes. Therefore, they put forth their best efforts to make the council an effective organization in their school. The Harmony Card’s started the 1954 football season with twelve returning lettermen and many prospective underclassmen. With all-conference linemen, Dave Klomp and Jim Flynn; hard-running backs, Bob Wilson, Don Brink, and Roger Scrabeck; and sticky-fingered ends, Dean Brunsvold and Elton Sikkink; the big question was, could their speed and trickery off-set the edge their opponents would have in sheer size and weight? The boys from Harmony took matters into their own hands and proved that, the bigger they are, the harder they fall as they romped into a second place tie with Caledonia, while losing only to Spring Valley, who was the District I Champ. The 1954-1955 Cards, coached by John Glesne, got off to a hot start and won seven straight ball games. They then lost the first place berth in District I by losing to Caledonia and a non-conference battle to Canton. Again, they bounded back with four more straight victories, including an impressive victory 80 to 41 over Preston. Wykoff, Spring Valley, and Chatfield turned back the title hungry Cards by dumping them three games in a row. Even though the Cards received a third place spot in a District where anyboby could win, they still ranked high among the Card teams of the past. From this fine team Elton Sikkink; Edwin Jertson; Robert Wilson; Richard Buri; and Captain, Dean Brunsvold will be bowing out through graduation. ® SpVAD—Row I, left to right: H. Berge, R.
