Harlem Consolidated H i f( h School Foreword A country of the people, by the people and for the people is naturally filled with life and duty. The press throughout its history informs the reader that local, state, and national administrations require eternal vigilance. Deeply cut headlines, conservative headlines, bold type headlines—all serve as reminders that each day is important. If they are universally filled with purpose, with honest work, and with charitable thinking the headlines blazen forth happy situations. The public schools have a great role to play in such a democracy. The students are their precious cargo and the headlines they learn to flash world-wide depends proportionately upon the Light and Truth that permeate the curriculum. nineteen hundred and forty-four

Harlem Consolidated High School Dedication History abounds with stories of heroism. Some have been sung, others unsung. We Americans have always enjoyed the story of Israel Putnam who left his plow in the furrow to join the Revolutionary forces in the fight for a land of the free. And history repeats itself. Today's stories of American heroes are legion. They hazard all in Freedom's fight— Break sharply off their jolly games, Forsake their comrades gay And quit proud homes and youthful dreams For famine, toil, and fray. To DON BURDICK, DALE CLARK, ED KIELY, RONALD BIRD, and TED BOGGIE who laid aside their school books so that all youth may dream dreams, we, the class of 1944, proudly dedicate this Meteor. nineteen hundred and forty four
