Loading drill-40n Transfer by high-lii DUR HISTORY The U.S.S. Dickson was named in honor of Lieutenant Commander Harlan R. Dickson, U. S. Navy, of Washington, D. C. He was a graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy, and performed duty as a carrier torpedo pilot in most of the areas of aerial combat in the early days of World War II. He was twice decorated with the Navy Cross for heroism and outstanding performance as a torpedo plane pilot, and was killed in action while flying from the U.S.S. Yorktown on Feb- ruary 5, 1944. The keel of the DD708 was laid in Kearney, N. J., and she was fitted out at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. She was commissioned on February 17, 1945.
