FOREVVORD The purpose of this catalog is to introduce you to Hargrave Military Academy, to show you by word and picture what the school is doing for boys under its care. Hargrave Military Academy is -a member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, which is the highest standardizing agency for approved Southern schools. Our graduates are admitted to colleges and universities on certificate without exuaminations and on the same basis as graduates from other preparatory schools of the first rank. The history of Hargrave Military Academy, a Baptist preparatory school, verifies its slogan, "Making Men-Not Money." - Through the united efforts of Rev. T. Ryland Sanford, then pastor of the Chatham Bap- tist Church, and his loyal and consecrated friend, J. Hunt Hargrave, Chatham Training Schoolawas organized in 1909. In 1925 the name was changed to Hargrave Military Academy. PHILOSOPHY The secondary school in America exists to aid and to promote in its students the develop- ment of those powers, skills, attitudes, and ideals which will enable them to become progres- sively useful as citizens in the school community, to the end that they may become useful and honorable citizens in a democratic, social, and political order. Its program must, therefore, be so organized and -administered as to assist and encourage the individual pupil to acquire, to the extent of his native endowments, knowledge and experiences that will assure, so far as may be, a personal responsibility for the realization of a well-rounded life in his relationship to society. In scope, the program should embrace the mental, moral, physical, social, cultural, and spiritual phases of man's existence. Hargrave Military Academy, founded by a group of consecrated Christi-an leaders, and developed under the ownership and general control of the Baptist Board of Missions and Education, believes t'hat it is obligated not only to provide for the mental, moral, and physi- cal development of its matriculates, but also to give the spiritual and religious aspects of life a definite place in its program. A proper attitude toward and relationship with the Supreme Being, developed in a non-sectarian atmosphere, with tolerance and good will toward all, are essential to the building of Christian character and leadership. The motto, "Making Men-Not Money," with all that it implies, sums up the philosophy of the school. The student body of Hargrave Military Academy, which is composed of boys from many social environments, home conditions, and educational backgrounds, may be divided into two main groups: CU those who enroll for the specific purpose of preparing for 'higher education, and C25 those who have failed to fit into the educational program of their home communities. It is the duty of the school to provide a program suited to the needs of these distinct groups. CBJ ECTIVES , Specifically these objectives may be stated as: 1. To provide a corps of teachers trained to lead in acideniic and extra curricular explorations, interests and activities calculated to help the student discover his aptitudes and decide what he will do with his life. 2. To maintain a pleasant, homelike atmosphere with proper care for the comfort, diet and gen- eral happiness ot' the student body. 3. To provide, in so far as possible, individual attention both from the educational and personal points of view. 4. To maintain a Military Training program enphasizing physical exercise and the develop- ment of such traits as punctuality, obedience, orderliness, respect for constituted authority, reverence for our Flag and National Institutions, ia. sense of personal responsibility, self-re- liance, and leadership, as well as the building of strong, graceful bodies. 5. To provide a sports program which seeks to adord adequate physical training, to promote and develop a true conception and practice of sportsmanship, and to create a spirit of loyalty and cooperation. 6. To provide for faculty-sponsored activities, initiated by the students, and developed in accordance with their recreational, cultural and avocational interests. 7. To maintain a wholesome environment, stress character building and spiritual development both by precept and example. 8. To develop the adolescent youth into a well-rounded being, ready and willing to take his place in society, whatever that place may be. -l7I-
