VOLUME VIII Editor-Lynn Nelson Layout-Judy Lewis Advisor-Edward Gudera Dedication-4 Administration-Faculty-e Activities-16 Sports-34 Undergraduates-42 Graduates-SO Retrospects-74 Advertisements-78 Dedication ALFRED C. O'CONNELL, ED.D. President August, 1964-February, 1967 HARFORD JUNIOR COLLEGE 401 THOMAS RUN ROAD BEL AIR. MARYLAND 21014 PHONE: 301 -734-7I71 OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT March 7 , 1967 It is a pleasure to write this letter of dedication since we are honoring an individual for whom we all have the utmost respect. Dr. Alfred C. O'Connell, President of Harford Junior College from 1964 to 19 67 , saw that this institution had an excellent beginning on its new campus . He will be remembered by the student body for his cheerful countenance, his willingness to meet with any student, and the personal interest he took in matters affecting students . The faculty members at the College will long be able to recall his professional leadership in curricular matters , his patent competence in administra- tive concerns, and his willingness to befriend all. The community, too, shall fondly remember Dr. O'Connell as a fine educator, a compelling speaker, and the College personified. Unfortunately, however, there will be those who may never have the opportunity to come to know Alfred C. O'Connell as we have had the privilege of knowing him. These are the tens of thousands of students whose pictures will follow in subsequent editions of the 917.1. Although they may never meet him personally, they may rest assured that the quality education they receive at this College is due to the leadership of the President to whom we are dedicating this yearbook and the members of the faculty whom he challenged. To our friend and inspirer we proudly dedicate the 1967 Owl. wM-w Joseph N. Hankin President President JOSEPH N. HANKIN, M.ED. President Administrative Staff JAMES A. ARMSTRONG, MS. Advised by Edward C. Kuhl, Dean of Students, the council is in- volved with student conduct as well as activities and special events. Dean Kuhl, moderator 19 Working as usual with a small staff and a smaller budget, the '67 Owl, moderated by Edward Gudera and edited by Lynn Nelson, strove valiantly to meet its early March deadline. If you are able to read these words in late May or early June, we succeeded. If you have just driven out to the campus through July heat to pick up your yearbook, we failed. In any case tthe bills prove in, we have produced the most expensive yearbook in the college's brief history. We also hope it comes closest to reflecting the energy and enterprise which characterizes one of Maryland's fastest growing community colleges. Editor Nelson 20 Owl 67 Moderator Gudera A new recruit therary Harford's Literary Magazine, at this writing un-named, promises to give stu- . dent artists and poets a means of publica- M agaZIIle tion. The magazine is being moderated by William Gardiner of the English Depart- ment and edited by Howard Kindel and Sue Wilding. Mr. Gardiner gets down to 1 business. 1 Radio Publications Taping a broadcast. The Radio Publications Commit- tee was originally established by the former President, Alfred C. O'Connell for the purpose of presenting the diverse aspects of the college to the community. Since its inception the committee has explored nearly every extra-curricular and academic pro- gram. The show, Perspective, has been well received by both the college and the community. At the present it is being broadcast over four radio stations, WAMD tAber- deem, WASA tHavre de GraceL WVOB tBel Ain, and WSER tElktom. 21 Under the able editorship of Bonnie Porter, the Owleye again provided a forum for student opinion. The news- paper covers not only campus events. but also intellectual and cultural activ- ities in the surrounding area. Homer H. Morris is faculty moderator. Dean Armstrong. Ugly Man winner PGOple to People Marie Riley in London 23 An international organization, People to People seeks to promote understanding among the peoples of the world. Last summer two rep- resentatives of Harford's chapter, Barbara Swall- well and Marie Riley, travelled extensively in Europe. The organization plans to sponsor another ambassador this year. Part of the funds for this trip were raised recently through an Ugly Man contest. Bob Annoni, runner-up Barbara Swallwell enroute One of the newest organizations on campus, the Ski Club promises to be one of the largest and most active. The membership has grown to over thirty students and these pictures, taken during the clubs recent excursion to the Blue Knob ski resort in Bedford, Pa., amply display the club's energy. Edward Ross of the English Department is moderator and Bob Woodward is president. Rustic Set A scene from the Fall production, Corruption in the Palace of Justice by Ugo Betti. Left to right: Howard Kindell, Barbara Swallwell, Larry Hoeck, Bill Carr. Robert Trantham, Russalice Canose, Jim McLean, Top platform: Bob Annoni, John Harrisson. One of the most active and oldest organizations on campus, the Rustic Set by the end of this term will have contributed four productions to the campus's cultural scene. The season opened with a highly acclaimed production of Corruption in the Palace of Justice. This was fol- lowed by a rather odd Christmas play, Masks of Angels. At this writing. the club has on the boards three student-directed efforts, Pinter's The Dumbwaiter, Genet's The Maids, and Che- kov's The Marriage Proposal. Planned for the Spring is a pro- duction of an original script by Wallace Hamilton, Anthony in the Desert. Michele Nelson is president. Jim Hopkins of the English Department is advisor. Lionel Edwards makes an adjust- ment. Radio Club The Radio Club is moderated by Lionel Edwards of the Engineering de- partment. The club possesses a powerful transmitter, and has been able to spread the word about H.J.C. as far away as the Canal Zone and the USSR. WA3 F RX to WA3 FRZ YM-YWCA The YM-YWCA was chartered by the Student Government on December 18,1966. The organi- zation holds membership in the Central Atlantic Area Y with headquarters in New Jersey. The group has already sponsored numerous speak- ers, including Joan Richardson, pictured below. Paul Wyatt is president. Grace Williams of the mathematics department and Francis Harris of the counseling office are co-sponsors. Mr. Harris addresses the mem- bers. 29 Chessmates The Chess Club has been active on campus for several years now. The members participate in intra- mural Iadder-play as well as out- side tournaments. President is Debbie Thomas. Wayne Housum, chairman of the mathematics and Engineering Division, is moderator. Earl Mason stymied again. Rifle Club Although the Rifle and Pistol Club was organized last year, it was not until this year that the group really became active. AI- ready thirty members are en- rolled. It is expected that twenty- five of them will have qualified by the end of the academic year in The National Rifle Association program for safety and marksman- ship. Elmer Worth of the psy- chology department is the spon- sor. 31 g 32 Art mCo-rduv Football Walter Angle HB Peter Bortz T Robert Chenderoni HB Duppy Duppstadt G Alan Dwajeski HB Rick Ebaugh G Alan Elizey G Vernon Fadeley FB Rick Florini G Edward Grass FB Roy Heaps E Jack Hillesland E Charles Jensen HB William Kennedy E James Kessler QB Philip Mamrak T David Meadows C Samuel McKinney T John Morrissey E Roy Mullinix HB Roy Pearce HB Rick Rollins G James Smith C John Steelman T Thomas Warfield T Patrick Welch E Richard Weiner E Rex Caswell HB Jim Morescheller HB Perspeches change asthe ac on 37 comes and goes. 38 Coached by Jack Call and Dick Fordyce, the 1966 Owls acquitted themselves admirably on the field. Although frequently outmanned the team never gave up. The high point of the season and indeed the high point of our young varsity football program came when the Owls de- feated Delaware Valley, 7-0. Basketball The 1966-67 basketball squad, coached by Jack Nichols. chairman of the Health and Physical Education Division. enjoyed the most successful season of any Harford varsity team. Led by Rick Corsetto, the nations' leading Junior College scorer with a 38.5 per game average, the Owls racked up an 18-6 record overall and finished 5-3, good enough for a third place tie, in the Tri-State Conference. The Owls finished fourth in the Con- ference tournament, missing third place by the whisker of an overtime loss t102-105t to Montgomery J.C. Besides Corsetto, John Battle, Dave Foley, Bob McCone, and Ron Stearn made outstanding contributions to the team. The bench, in the words of Coach Nichols, Ncame through when we needed it.
