Undergraduates The first step taken in any task is always the most difficult, for it signifies a break with pre- vious methods and experience. Yet this step must be taken without hesitation if the individual is to grow. Nowhere is this truer than in the pursuit of education at the college level. The college Fresh- man can no longer rely on his lofty position as a high school senior; his knowledge, not his social achievement, is the standard by which he is now measured. If he hopes to gain from attending col- lege, he must accept the fact that others know much more thanhe. As Plato pointed out, aware- ness of ignorance is the beginning of wisdom. Freshman year is a year of rapid and lasting changes for the student. The most important changes are those which occur in the mind. The college Freshman believes he has taken a great step from the position of high school kid to college man, that he has become mature and worldly-wise by virtue of his entrance into col- lege; but the final proof of just how mature he is will be how successfully he completes the two years of intensive study which he faces in col- lege.
