Foreword A skilled craftsman carves ci chess piece out of wood. He works slowly and carefully, striving to make the most perfect figure possible. When he is satisfied, he lays the piece away and prepares to carve another. He works, carving and re-carving, until finally he can admire his finished project - stately kings, artistic knights, rigid bishops, all waiting for the game to begin. It is the same with man. As he grows, he creates within himself a certain readiness to begin the game of life. Everyone is different - as different as a king from a pawn. Each man is distinct, an individual working unto himself. But man is also a part of something greater - an institution made up of singular human beings working together for a common goal, a unified purpose. Each man is part of a team working to win the game of life. Just as each chess piece on a playing board moves to guard and protect the other pieces, man moves to help others. This is brotherhood, unity, and love, essential qualities needed to win. Through the pages of the l965 Saga, we attempt to show this brotherhood and mutual loyalty in action among the students and faculty of Harding Senior High School. 5
