Page 28 ARDING'S 1936 football season was launched September 19 when the team, accompanied by many fellow students, met the Delaware Willis' eleven at the Delaware stadium. Although the season was opened no score was chalked up. The struggle ended in a scoreless tie. Coach Carl Cramer, who was entering his second year at Harding, had led the squad through strenuous exercises for two weeks before school com- menced in September. The junior varsity, under the training of Coach Bill Williams, displayed promising talent for the future varsity squad. Mount Gilead was the first home guest of Harding September 26 at which game Harding's first victory of the season was scored. Many games were played at night under the newly installed flood-lights. The managers, John Wilhelm, jack Creviston, Vincent Wise, John Rhea, and james Andrews were invaluable to the squads and coaches. A group of cheerleaders were organized by Mr. Faust who taught them cheers and formations. Enthusiasm of spectators and squad was boosted high by this group and by the band under the direction of Mr. Homer Huffman. Richard Clarke and Lowell Jones led the- band. The season was ended at Mount Vernon, November 14.
