Miss Ellen Juel, foreign exchange student from Norway. Harding’s exchange student for 1968-69 is Ellen Juel. Since her arrival from Norway on August 18, Ellen has participated in many phases of American home and school life. “I have learned to know the American people—how they live and how they think. And then,of course, I have learned to appreciate everything at home in Norway, and I now realize how much I love it!” Ellen will be living with the Thomas L. Helms family until early July. Representing Harding in the Charlotte Exchange Student Program for 1968-69 is James Rash. James traveled to Santiago, Chile, where he lived for a month with the family of Alfredo Arueste. “I liked the slow way the Chilean people go about doing things. One of the main things I learned was not to judge people by first appearances. Although many of the people were poorer than we are, they were much friendlier.” The Foreign Exchange Student Committee promotes understanding between the exchange student at Harding and the student body. It also carries out various activities during the year in order to give financial support for the following year’s representative in the Charlotte Exchange Student Program. They provided entertainment in the form of Cuties and Capers and Homecoming Week; but they also worked to establish more effective student standards. Honor Week, sponsored by the Student Council, provided an opportunity for students to recognize our honor system for what it is and to take an active part in establishing a new code. The Council recognized two new clubs this year, approved a school flag, and formed an Interclub Council, in addition to its other responsibilities. Our leaders and their advisor, Mrs. Wade, worked with students and other Student Council representatives to promote the best school spirit ever at Harding High. Harding’s student legislative body helped, by concentrated effort for the benefit of all students, to make 1968-1969 a year to be remembered. 56 The Honor Society FIRST ROW: Sandra Grant, Marilyn Adkins, Julia Brown, Steve Williams. Harding’s “Golden Rams” 1968 football season was filled with excitement and shortcomings. Archrival West Mecklenburg put a damper on our season’s opener as our Rams were defeated 18-0. However, the Rams bounced back in fine fashion, defeating the Olympic Trojans 33-7. In an exciting contest at Memorial Stadium, Harding came from a two touchdown deficit to take a 21-20 lead over Independence. However, the Patriots drove 60 yards for a score in the final two minutes of the game to win it. The Rams invaded North stadium the following week, hungry for a victory; and the final score was Harding 14, North 7. A wild scoring affair against top-rated South cured any doubts about the weakness of our Ram team. The next week Harding easily scored a victory over Second Ward 28-14. Our homecoming game, which was played in a constant downpour, ended in a Myers Park win, 6-0. Ashley, the runner-up in the state, rolled over our Rams; the next week in a first half defensive battle, East and Harding went in at half time with a 0-0 tie. East came on strong in the second half to take the Rams 20-6. In the final game of the season our “Golden Rams” swamped Lee Edwards High School in Asheville 33-14. Harding’s basketball coach, Pete Campbell, fielded the strongest basketball team in a decade. The lack of height was more than made up for in quickness, ball-handling, and excellent shooting. In what was termed a “rebuilding year” for our Ram matmen, there were many outstanding and promising wrestlers. The final seasonal team record was 5-7, but our Rams lost five of these by less than ten points. There should be excellent returnees for Coach Harold Davis next year. Our successes in spring sports further demonstrated the strength of Harding’s athletic ability. Our track, golf, tennis and baseball teams worked hard and made a fine showing. On the whole, our school had a good sports season. Our 1969 teams lived up to Harding High School’s reputation of skill and sportsmanship. The Class of ’69 Believe it or not, we lived through those trying times—called the Sophomore and Junior years—to become SENIORS. As we look back over our experiences at Harding, though, those trying times are pushed away by the memories of the numerous indescribable times that will always leave with us a nostalgic and fond feeling. These memories of Spirit Week, Christmas decorations, talent shows, Cuties and Capers, dances, beauty queens, and the Junior-Senior Proms are events in which we Seniors can take pride. Academic, athletic, and civic achievements can also be added to our list of successes. For this feeling of having spent a worthwhile and memorable three years in the high school, we owe many thanks to the Harding High School faculty, staff, and high-caliber students. When we are hit by the full realization that this is our last year at Harding, we think of the old friends, the understanding teachers, the lunch room scramble, mad dashes to class, and cold football games that we will miss, but we also look ahead to a bright future and unlimited possibilities. All in all, everyone must agree that Happiness is being a Senior! 106 Jo Ann Atkins Janice Susan Atnip Ramona Joy Ayala Phillip Harry Baker Linda Mae Bailes Donnie Bailey Sandra Ballard Mary Catherine Barber James Calvin Barbery Thomas G. (Second Vice-President, Eric Koerber, not pictured.) The Class of ’70 To our class, happiness is being a junior at Harding High School. Having overcome the fear and nervousness of our sophomore year, we have enjoyed taking part in all phases of school life. We look back with satisfaction upon all the work we have done for our school. Throughout the year we have served in many groups and organizations. Many of us—such as Cook, Jackson, Koerber, and Powell—were on the athletic teams. Our members made up a large part of the band and filled positions in clubs and committees. We eagerly participated in school activities this year. We helped to decorate the school during Spirit Week and on other occasions. We worked hard on our skit for Cuties and Capers. Members of our class prepared for the Junior-Senior Prom and served as Junior Marshals. Our class has enjoyed our second year at Harding, but for us this is no time for looking back. We are all eagerly looking forward to the new challenges and happiness of our senior year. ns sheua Abernathy Larry Adams Richard Adams Tom Adams Freddy Adcock Jerry Akins Patricia Alexander Andy Anthony Wayne Atkinson Butch Aughtry Mike Ayers Debbie Bailey Pam Barnes Pam Beck Steve Bell Susie Blackburn Vicki Blackburn Francie Blackmon Susan Bost Deborah Boulware Lana Bowles Mike Bowman Faye Braddy Vernard Brannon Jack Brisson William Brittle Lynn Brookshire Doug Brotherton Bonnie Brunk Virginia Bryan Wanda Bryant Peggy Burks Suzanne Byrum Billy Caddell Ernie Caldwell Debbie Campbell Katherine Cannon Thelma Canty Freida Carland Wylie Carland Donnie Cathey Debby Caughman Tom Causey Eugenia Cavasin Bobby Chesson Marian Chisholm Ang ela Clark Hazel Clauson Tim Clontz Jeff Cochrane Linda Cook Ricky Cook Donnie Cooke Randy Cooper Mike Copeland Clifton Cornelius Marlene Cottingham Marvin Cottingham Bobby Cowick Jane Crenshaw Linda Crockett Anne Crosby Elaine Crump Martha Cunningham Sheryle Daffinee Steve Darnell Sylvester Davenport Myra Davidson Evelena Davis Gordon Davis Van Dawson Martha Deans Robert Deaton Edward Deese Bill Dellinger Denise Dellinger Donna Dellinger Mark Dennis Terri Dettmar Valerie Dixon Mike Dotson Bertha Douglas Danny Douglas Gail Dunn Pat Dzurik Glendora Ealey Sylvia Earnhardt Joel Eberhart 120 Steve Edwards Don Elwood Cassie Eskridge Mike Eubanks Ricky Ferrell Calvin Fleming Trisha Ford Johnny Frazier Mike Freeland Myra Freeland Debbie Freeman Wanda Frye Janet Galloway Linda Garner Kay Gordon Cornelia Graham Robert Graham Helen Griffin Teresa Griffin Vicki Griffith John L. The Class of’71 Even though being a sophomore had its trials, it has been an experience we shall always remember. Before the first day of school, most sophomores were apprehensive and a little scared, but very excited. After the first few days, our frightened state changed to excitement as we became involved. Activities and preparation for Spirit Week really stirred up our enthusiasm, and we enjoyed every minute of it. The little things—such as football games, lunch room scrambles, and new friendships—added much to our first year at Harding; and we, as we journey into our Junior year, with smiles on our faces and notebooks in our hands, feel a twinge 01 remorse that our tenth-grade year is over. All in all, our sophomore year has been happy and memorable. We have two years yet to go, but we have the satisfaction, at last, of belonging to a wonderful, wonderful school. 126 Cathy Adams Connie Alien Judie Allen Ernest Alston Charles Anderson Leslie Anderson Kathy Armstrong Felicia Atteberry Ray Austin Susan Austin Cathy Bamburg Jon Barber Eddie Barnes Linda Beaty Suzanne Beaty Larkin Bell Brenda Benton Donald Bodrick William Bodrick Susan Bonapart David Bost Lillian Bradburn Ginny Braddy Wayne Brannon Debbie Brogden Lamar Buff Vanessa Bumgardner Bonnie Burnette Mike Burris Marty Byrd Teresa Calebro Novella Campbell Christy Carroll Randy Carroll Hal Cathey Mike Causey Cookie Chandler Mike Christy Van Clanton Chuck Clark Arithelia Clyburn Ray Conder Eddie Connell Lewis Cook Linda Cook Regina Cook Vicki Cooke Virginia Craft 127 Ginger Doerrbecker Paula Dowless Cynthia Dunn Ben Durham Bruce Dycus Debbie Earley Kathy Eberhart Brenda Criswell Denise Cronin Bruce Davis Sandra Davis Susy Davis Ricky DeSoto Billy Devine Kenny Edwards Thomas Edwards Barbara Elliott Pam Elliott Sharon Elliot Ricky Emery Jeff Ethington Harriet Eury Alan Fann Jimmy Farnsworth Ralph Farnsworth Ed Fisher Harolee Ford Doug Foster Starr Garmon Edwie Garrett Debbie Goble Terry Goins Teresa Goode Darlene Graham Michael Gray Steve Green Jerry Grier Roger Griffin David Grose Marilyn Grubbs Douglas Gunthorpe Robert Guy 128 Tina Haire Angie Hardin Billy Hardin Trena Hardin Marcia Harrington Alma Harris Shirley Harris Brenda Hartsell Steve Hartsell Shirley Haynes Jerry Heath Jimmy Hege Marcia Hegwood Esther Helms Tony Helms Alonzo Henderson David Hice Craig Hill Debbie Hinson Don Hinson John Hinson Cathy Hoover Cynthia Hopper Ricky Hord Janet Home Sue Hough Kevin House Deborah Howard Brenda Hucks Sandra Hucks Fred Hudson Steve Huitt Alise Hunt Cathy Hunt Jim Ingram Herman Lee Jones Janice Jones Jennifer Jones Roger Jones Phil Joyce Larry Lancaster Vicki Laney Dollie Jackson Phyllis Jackson Eddie James Larry James Sandra James Harry Jay Vangie Jenkins 129 Paul Lanier Debbie Lankford Kathy Lee Mike Lemaster Nick Likas Jim Lindsay Angus Lippard Cathy Lloyd Myra Lowman Ann Lundy Marie Macomson Monda Mahaffey Irene Mandrapilias David Martin June Massey Robert McAlister David McCorkle Manette McDaniel Carolyn McDonald Larry McGowan Ericer McGee Janice McGhee Damaris McMillian Orwelle McNair Larry McSwain Kathie McVickers Janice Mickens Willie Mickerson Lisa Miller Barry Mills Steve Mills Eugene Moore Rose Moore O’Neal Morrow June Moser Robin Moser Debbie Mullis Sylvester Mungo Kathy Nelson Pam Nelson 130 Billy Peavy Joyce Penegar Freddie Perdue Jimmy Perkins Ronald Perry Gordon Pettit Richard Osborne Barbara Paige Sheila Panther Lynda Parker Johnny Paschal Eddie Patrick Debbie Patton Sandra Phillips Tony Price Susan Prophet Tony Randall Ellen Reagin Larry Reynolds Ricky Rhodes Linda Riddle Joe Riley Ricky Roberts Johnny Robinson Sheila Robinson Gordon Rowe Henry Rucker Linda Sanders Verdell Sanders Frederick Scott Cindy Scruggs Jack Seter Tommy Shaw Clay Shelton Terry Sheppard Sharon Shore Doris Shout Janet Shue Darryl Sims Dianna Sloan 131 Jerry Sloop Bobby Smith Carolyn Smith Craig Smith Don Smith Mike Smith Patti Smith Rickey Smith Willie Smith Sherry Spikes Karen Spivey Doris Stanley Reece Steele Gloria Stephens Carole Stockton Harry Stover James Strickland Janice Stroud Uther Stroud Debby Suit Mary Suttle Betty Swanner Sylvia Sweatman Carol Taylor Vanessa Taylor Ralph Teal Dale Tesh Randall Tesh Peggy Thomas Sarah Timmons John Tinsley Ronnie Todd Donald Toll Teresa Trammell Rex Trogdon Ernie Truett Donna Tucker Terri Tucker Janice Turner Chuck Tuttle Beverly Vandiver Tim Walch 132 Sherry Walker Craig Wallace Randy Walters George Washington Billy Joe Watson Mary Watson Magdalene Wells Judy West Claudia White Johnny White Linda White Dale Whitney Paula Wiley Margaret Williams Wanda Williams Tonga Willis Denise Wilson Ronnie Wilson David Wingate Ricky Wingate Karen Wise 133 134 iCOPM i J ■ 7i -•Hw 1 a .21 . ‘MM | | 135 the delight in sharing . . . 136 A D VER TISEMENTS l t p oil e r$ CL re v a Vtcje SfCitfj I$ .
