Varsity Cheerleaders 61 62 A THLETICS 63 Athletics—The Spirit Athletics sets the pace at Harding. The won-lost record of the Rams visibly affects the atmosphere of the school. When we see Jackie Greene gracefully rifle a touchdown pass or James Houston slip and slither through three defenders and drop in a lay-up, we are proud. When we see Jimmy Strickland reverse and pin his man in ten seconds flat, when we see a double-play ball move like lightning from Douglas to Utley to Cole, we are proud, and we leap to our feet to cheer. When we win a close game on Friday night, there are proud faces on Monday morning; the outcome of the game determines the pace of the school. In a sense, athletics is Harding’s biggest form of student expression. When Bill Davis crouches on the starting blocks, there are no teachers, principals, or coaches on the blocks with him. When Tom House puts his toe on the rubber and studies the batter, there are no textbooks to tell him how to pitch. Our athletes have perhaps been guided indirectly by teachers and textbooks, but at game time, our boys are on their own. Athletics might also be called the showcase of Harding. Our school is judged by the efforts of our athletes. As Joe Savage passes a green-shirted runner on the cross-country course, it is a victory of Harding’s discipline and endurance over that of Myers Park. As the referee’s hand drops and Mike Yancey and his opponent cautiously circle the mat, a battle is set—not only a battle between Yancey and the boy in red tights, but also a battle between Harding and South Mecklenburg. No matter what Harding’s record may be, the love of a team representing the ideals of our school binds us together. Through loss and through victory, the Rams have kept their feet on the ground and have never given up. Even though our record doesn’t show it, we had the coaches, players, and desire that a great team needs. Our team was great, as a run-down of the games shows: In the first game of the season, senior Bruce Hager returned a 91-yard kickoff to tie Harding with West Charlotte, 26—26. Mike Yancey and Greg Richardson led the defense as the Rams, eager for their first win, easily crushed Olympic, 33-0. September 21 was a bad night for the Rams, as they were de¬ feated, 42—6, by archrival West Mecklenburg. North, then the city’s number one team, beat the mighty Rams by only a touchdown. Hager made his longest run of the season, a 93—yard kickoff return to make the final score 14 6. Senior quarterback Jackie Greene had a hand in all of Hard¬ ing’s scores against South, throwing two TD passes and running for the other six points. Phil Robinson’s two extra points evened the score at 20—20, as the Rams tied the number two team in the state. Before . . . After . . . Because of a knee injury, fullback Boyce Cole participated in only the first four games. Leads Gridiron Team In what The Charlotte News called “a strange game.” HHS bombed the Second Ward Tigers, 21—7. Against Myers Park, Ken Reid and Robert Ardrey scored on long passes from Greene; however, the ‘Stangs whipped the Rams, 26—14. Even though Greene threw four TD passes and set a school record by throwing 393 yards in one game, it wasn’t enough to stop Division Seven leader Ashley. It was a 33—24 heartbreak for the Rams. On our homecoming night, East handed the Rams a 19—6 loss. Ken Reid made Harding’s lone touchdown. In the Ram’s last game, Greene threw four touchdown pass¬ es, but the tough Asheville Maroons scored one more touchdown to defeat the Rams, 41—33. Our great team’s not—so—great record does not show the tre¬ mendous experience that the devoted players received. As South Carolina Coach Paul Dietzel told the Rams at the Football Ban¬ quet in February, “If you accept a challenge, do your very best, and never relent, even a losing season contains a wealth of pride and fun.” Bruce Hager, “Ram of the Year”, in action. 69 Varsity Basketball COACHES-Mr. Campbell (head) and Mr. Pyatt. The journey has been rough, but we, the class of ’68, have made it! We endured the necessary year as lowly sophomores. We tiptoed around, learning the ins and outs of Harding. Assem¬ blies, athletics, and clubs soon filled our thoughts. Meanwhile, our ever-enduring teachers were quietly prodding us to take steps toward maturity. Next, we skipped through our “in-between year.” We yell¬ ed at pep rallies, participated in the Talent Show, put up Christmas decorations, helped in Cuties and Capers, danced to the music of the Tams, and planned a colorful Junior-Senior Prom. Whew! We completed our junior year in record time. As seniors, we are the pace setters. Bruce Hager is out in front as Student Council president. Leaders in athletics in¬ clude Greene, Cole, Hostetler, Utley, Douglas, Cook, Houston, Gordon, and Stilwell. Alan Trogdon runs the Harding Hi-Lites. Randy Goforth manipulates the high-stepping Harding High Band. In the race to choose our most beautiful girl, it is difficult to pick only one. Sylvia Davis is our Homecoming Queen and a Senior Beauty. Our other Senior Beauty is Sandra Kassin. Diane Hucks reigns as Miss Harding. As this year is ending, we feel a tinge of sadness. Slowly we come, and quickly we go—proud to claim Harding as our Alma Mater. 84 We Are Seniors At Last! Doug Agnew Helen Kay Alford Cheryl Allen Sherry Elaine Allison Sandra L. Two Harding seniors have been chosen as the first Unsung Hero and Heroine to appear in a Harding yearbook. Donnie Reid and Suzanne Caughman truly deserve this honor. Donnie was one of few sophomores chosen to play varsity football and has been one of the squad’s most dependable play¬ ers ever since. He has further demonstrated his athletic ability on the wrestling team. Much of the success of the 1967 Junior-Senior Prom can be attributed to Donnie’s hard work; he constructed the platform and other props and has willingly offered his services to do every¬ thing from building scenery for the choir’s musical comedy to carting cheerleaders all over town to get watermelons for the football players. An energetic and enthusiastic student, Donnie has certainly been an asset to Harding. Suzanne, a girl of many talents and abilities, also has contrib¬ uted much to school life. A brilliant student, she was inducted in¬ to the Honor Society in her junior year and has been a member of the French Club and the Student Council. She has spent long hours soliciting ads and doing other te¬ dious, but necessary, jobs for the Acorn. In English 12, she vol¬ untarily led the class in the devising of an English timeline. Be¬ sides this, Suzanne did a great deal of work in the preparation of the Student Directory. Versatility and ability—these are words that describe Suzanne, one of Harding’s most outstanding stu¬ dents. The Acorn staff extends sincerest congratulations to Donnie and Suzanne. 101 LF.IGH CASKEY, Secretary MR. MARTIN SHUFORD, Advisor The Junior Class To us. the members of the Junior Class of Harding High School, being a junior is like being in the middle of a ladder. No longer are we on the bottom rung of the sophomores, but on the middle rung, which signifies that we are, at last, upperclass¬ men. We have worked toward arid achieved excellence, both in the schoolroom and on the athletic field. All of us tried to partici¬ pate in some way. Many juniors, such as Ardrey, Buff, Kisner, Reid and Savage played on various athletic teams. Others, in¬ cluding Alderman, Pistone, and Ware promoted spirit at half¬ time by playing in the band. Others joined clubs and organiza¬ tions to help stimulate extracurricular activities. We participated in many school-wide activities: on special occasions we helped to decorate the school; during Spirit Week, we won first prize for the best-decorated building. The class elect¬ ed Julie Brown as our class beauty. We worked hard at Cuties and Capers, the Talent Show, and the Junior-Senior Prom. Being a junior is like being in the middle of a ladder. We have seen the progress we have made as we climbed from the rank of sophomores, but we also see that we must work much harder to reach the top seniorship at Harding High School. 102 Upperclassmen! f Marilyn Adkins Myron Alderman James Allen Terry Allen David Allison Jacob Anderson Toby Anderson Robert Ardrey Linda Armstrong Jo Ann Atkins Jan Atnip Linda Aughtry Ramona Ayala Linda Bailes Donnie Bailey Cathy Barber Jim Barbery Tommy Barnes 103 Juniors Wanda Bass Thomas Bates Arthur Beaty Billy Beckham Odell Bell Constance Bennett Ivah Bentley Gene Biddix Sarah Bidgood Ted Biggers Janice Blackmon Martha Blackston Charles Blackwell Susie Blackwell Floyd Bost Ted Bost Suzette Bowers Richard Brittle Juniors William Broome Donnie Brown Julie Brown Glen Bryant Steve Buff Joy Bumgarner Dale Burgess Debbie Butler Cindy Byrant Dianne Carlisle Rita Carlton Leigh Caskey Jimmy Champion Bonnie Clark Mike Clark Margaret Clyburn Billy Cochran Steve Conder 105 College Boards Ahead. .. Most of us gladly walk away from the inevitable title of “punky sophomore.” In September, we came through the doors of Harding, full of hopes, alt hough more often than not we used the wrong doors. After nine months, we have learned and accept¬ ed the fact that only sophomores say and do the wrong things. As we look back over the past year, we recall many fond memories. Our excellent J. V. football, basketball, and baseball teams made us proud; Koerber, Jackson, Cook, Dewalt, and Douglas—all made great contributions to the sports scene. We chose Vonnie Yandle as Sophomore Beauty and worked long and hard on ourCuties and Capers skit. Probably the best part of coming to Harding was the prospect of the new friendships and experiences. Although we were the low men on the totem pole, it was not so bad. After all, we are only sophomores once. 116 Sophomores Sheila Abernathy Larry Adams Richard Adams Tom Adams Freddie Adcock Jerry Akins Gene Alexander Pat Alexander Andy Anthony Judy Armstrong Wayne Atkinson Butch Aughtry Mike Ayers Debbie Bailey Brenda Baker Judy Baker Nick Baker Elizabeth G.
