A memorable day! The day the class of '59 comes of age. The day the tiny acorn planted in the misty days of '53 becomes a full grown oak. As we made our way through the crowded halls back in that distant September we never gave thought to the fact that we were sowin the seed for today's flowering. No, we were en- tirely too busy finding classrooms that apparently didn't exist and boring our way through masses of towering juniors and seniors who seemingly didn't care whether they ever got anywhere on time or not. Becomin better acquainted, however, we found the halls a wonderful place where we could admire brawny football heroes and glamorous cheerleaders and swoon with ecstasy whenever one happened to spare us a word-or even a glance. Our teachers proved sympathetic and understanding. jimmy King became our president for the year. Iimmie Lee Whitley was attendant to the gridiron queen. jimmy King even managed to make the junior hi h football squad. We were beginning to find a place in school life. The tiny acorn was beginning to sprout. With the next year we really started sinking our roots. Vir- ginia Altizer and R. L. jenkins were our presidents, Susan Ham- brick our gridiron attendant. Mayme Io Parr made the cheering squad though she was only an eighth ader, and three of our boys-Jimmy King, Tommy Byrum, and! Scooter Witherspoon- and two girls-Pat Williams and Annelle Sherron-played on the junior high basketball teams. With Ken Parks and Ierry Cates as vice-president and secretary of the junior high student council first semester and Susan Hambrick and Phoebe Stroupe as vice- president and treasurer second semester, we were pushing upward. And upward we went into the senior class of the junior high school and our responsibilities grew heavier. Trish Frye was freshman editor of the AconN and Patsy Mu editor of the Hi-Lites. De Vera Taylor and Pam Worley served as junior student council presidents and Pam Worley and Phoebe Stroupe as secretaries. With Beth Clinkscales at the helm, the Iunior Honor Society sponsored the first 'unior high homecoming over which immy King and Pam Worley mled as king and queen. De Vera aylor served as attendant at both the junior and senior high gridiron courts. jimmy Kin and Ken Parks were co-captains of football that year, leading flue team to victory in the city championship. Lend- in their lungs to the cause were junior high cheerleaders Pam Vigirley, Betty Elliott, Phoebe Stroupe, R. L. jenkins, George hlilitclhelli Judy Blackwood, Susan Hambrick, and Mayme Io Parr, t e ea . When Valentine rolled around, Phoebe Stroupe and Andy Martin were named Valentine prince and princess by the junior high school. And with baseball taking over, jimmy King and Dwaine Godfrey made the varsity team-two lone freshmen. Yes, Phoebe Stroupe and DeVera Taylor really led us through a busy nine months that ninth grade year, as we shot up, branchin off here and there and everywhere-into every part of schoolg life. With the tenth grade we hit a temporary lull in our growth. We were underclassmen again, and other people took the leader- ship in activities outside of those of our own class. Mayme Io Parr was again our lone representative on the cheering squad, but jimmy Kin , Dwaine Godfrey, Ken Parks, and Scooter Witherspoon made varsity football. Emily Broome was our grid- iron attendant, and Phoebe Stroupe our annual beauty. Becky Elam became sophomore editor of the ACORN, and eight of our girls managing to get themselves on the program for junior- Senior, got a taste of what work and fun waited for them when they became juniors. With Ken Parks' leadership both semesters, the tenth grade slipped by, and we found ourselves ready to put forth more branches, more twigs, to really spread ourselves in the two years to come. Spread, did we say? Yes. and sometimes we even overshadowed the class of '58 rowing right beside us. School was hardly under- way when Phoeffae Stroupe walked away with the coveted title of Miss Harding and the position of carrousel princess. We had three varsity cheerleaders, too-Pam Worley, Mayme o Parr, and Phoebe Stroup-and two majorettes-Billie Faye arbour and Becky Bollinger. And on the student council Patsy Page Ninety-two Mullis was vice-president and Pam Worley secretary one semes- ter, and Pam was vice-president and Mayme jo Parr treasurer the second. Working on publications were Becky Elam, ACORN junior edi- tor, Manson Case, ACORN junior advertising manager, Beth Clinkscales. ACORN underclass editor, and Patsy Mullis, Hi-Lites assistant editor. Emily Broome again served as class homecoming attendant, and Deane Benton was chosen class beauty for the ACORN. But as the year drew to a close everything speeded up. New jobs, new responsibilities, greater growth, for Junior-Senior Prom time had rolled around. Under the leadership of Pam Worley, we selected the theme, Moonglow, and staged a glamorous evening of entertainment for the class of '58. And to give the departing seniors a fitting and dignified fare- well, we chose commencement marshals, headed by Manson Case and Pam Worley as chief and assistant chief. These two, Phoebe Stroupe, Gene Melton, Ronnie Pucke and Darr l Shaver, ushered the class of '58 off the scene. nd so they ma e way for us, the class of '59 to spread our branches, sun our leaves, and grow bigger and stronger as we went toward maturity. with Bernadette Nouel, DeVera Taylor, Becky Elam, U e Judy Blackwood, Patsy Mullis, Margaret Pressley, v ' 2 It's been a wonderful year-a year which has spotlighted so many different ones of us-Betty Elliott as our 1959 Miss Harding and Carrousel princess, Phoebe Stroupe as Gridiron Queen and D.A.R. Good Citizen, Patsy Mullis as Miss Hi Miss, Deane Benton as Gridiron attendant and senior class ACORN beauty, Billie Faye Barbour, Peggy Merritt, Deane Benton, Phoebe Stroupe, and Brenda Griffin. and Iudy Blackwood as Calendar Girl winners in the Cuties 'n Capers show. And on the football sports scene highlights were Bilf Russell. best sportsmanship, Ken Parks, co-captain and most improved player, Dwaine Godfrey, co-captain and outstanding lineman, and jimmy King, most valuable player and outstanding back. Dwaine and jimmy even received All-American honorable men- tion. As for basketball Fred Stewart led the whole city-county scor- ing for the season. Cheering all teams on to their best were Phoebe Stroupe, head cheerleader, Pam Worley, Betty Elliott, and ' .x --- o Parr, and marching at the front of the band -' o as drum major and Margaret Pressley as majorette. Becky Elam and Patsy Mullis wrestled with the publication problems of the ACORN and the Hi-Lites. DeVera Taylor and Connie Wilson sweated blood in their pursuit of ads. Manson Case and Darryl Shaver tried to keep the books out of the red. Raymond Hollifield, Beth Clinkscales, and Phoebe Stroupe, too, helped bear the burden as the annual and newspaper met dead- lines-and bills. Manson Case headed the student body for both semesters with Patsy Mullis as first semester secretary. Randy Lambe and Beth Clinkscales were top honor society officers and ultimately vale- dictorian and salutatorian because of their high ranking grades. And Randy brought prestige to the school-and to our class-by going to the finals in the Morehead Scholarship competition. We romped through Twerp Week, we slaved over the senior olay . . . and loved every minute. We thrilled over Junior-Senior. We wept tears at Maroon and Gold Day-and promptly forgot them in the ex ' ment of the senior picnic. t our head the first semester and Pam Worley the --:-- have come to tonight and our last class get- together. Tonight the class of '59 has reached maturity. Tomorrow we go our separate ways. The acorns leave the parent oak but carry in themselves the characteristics of stock from which they sprang. We leave the class of '59 but carry always in ourselves the mark of our six years association with each other, our teachers, and our school. Pnsv MuLr..1s H istorian 77 ,74... ., SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY Ladies and gentlemen, this is your reporter from Interplanetary Television Station U. U. A. CUniversally Used Atomaticallyj, bringing you the gigantic interplanetary celebration of the coming 21st century. Our base of operations is in New York, and we will be flashing from time to time to our other stations around space. Here in New York the tremendous celebration has been going on for a week. The festivities were opened by a speech made by the President of the United States of Wald CU. S. WJ, Manson Case. Assisting Mr. Case in the opening meeting were his vice-president Mayme Jo Parr, his secretary of Treasury, Connie Wilsong and his faithful advisor and friend, Mr. Darryl -Shaver. President Case, in his speech, praised the work and accomplishments for peace by the U. S. W. CUnited States of Waldl, and especially its planetary scientific com- mission headed by the greatest scientist of all times, Doctor Ran- dolph S. Lambe, noted for his construction of a gigantic system of Space Highways between the planets. Also praised fcg the work on the commission were Edward Chalmers, Bill Ward, Faison Pickard, and George Straton, Doctor Lambe's assistants. Here we have just received the signal from our station on Mars. We shall continue with the festivities in New York after the report of all other stations. Come in, Mars. This is'Trish Frye, roving reporter from Mars, bringing you a report of th dous celebration taking place in the center of the capital city of Mars, Marsonville. For weeks there has been a series of gay parties given by socialites, Betty Edwards and Joy Pope. Tonight the aerial coliseum has been tumed in as a show place and all the population of Mars is here. One of the most glamorous celebrities present is Mrs. Mars, Betty Elliott, escorted by her husband, Nikki Helms, owner and actor for the Atomic Films Incorporated, also known as the Marsion Dream Boat. Among other famous celebrities was the terrific Barbour and Melton Team, who entertained the guests with their new dancing act, The Pluto Rock. At er Auditorium, named for the famous rocket produc d his assistant Ronnie Puckett, the Mars Symphony Orchestra was led by universally renowned conductor, Raymond Hollifield, who played thernew Mars National Anthem composed by the famous song writer and singer, Glenda Neal. As midnight approaches, throngs are filling the streets preparing to greet the new year and the new century. . . . Now I switch you to the correspondent on Venus, Mar- garet Pressley . . . . This is Margaret Pressley conducting you through the streets of Venus crowded with joyous people. Across the street from the studio is the Venus night club, A la Venus. Entertaining on this new year's eve are the two geniuses of comedy, DeVera Taylor and Sue Raley. In the crowd of gay party-goers were the outstanding athletes of the Interplanetary Football Team, Cecil Collins, Albert Lands, Joe Nicholson, Jimmy Yandle and Jimmy Taylor, with Dwaine Godfrey and Ken Parks as captains. These two captains led the Interplanetary Team to a record of 15 wins and no losses and to the title of Space Champions. With Dwaine Godfrey was his lovely wife, Deane Godfrey, Mrs. Venus. To my right, I see a beautiful atomic display of fire works, made for the people of Venus by Warren Thompson, the Fire Work King, and his assistant, Carlyle Smith. We have just received a signal from Jupiter saying that they are ready to diffuse their reports on the latest new year's eve festivities. So come in, Jupiter. Here is Becky Elam speaking for Jupiter. The spirit of the city is one of Mardi-Gras. For a week we have had a continual parade. Featured in the gigantic spectacle were the Spacettes, Becky Bollinger, Martie Frazier, Jean Joyce, Peggy Merritt, Phyllis Taylor, Janet Gardner and Carolyn Sweezy. Riding high on the queen float was Miss Jupiter, Judy Blackwood, escorted by Mr. Jerry Cates, president of Space Cloth Incorporated, who is also well-known as Mr. Jupiter. Several of the large dances this week have featured the Ric d M is Rocketteers, composd of Tommy Byrum, Buddy Booth, Derrick Lane, C arlie Seawell, including vocalist Sarah Bunn. Besides parades and dances, the showing of the Dream Home of the 21st century was public. Sitting high upon the Radium Hill, this dream building was designed by head architect Scooter Witherspoon and his assistant James Bumgamer. This house features such conveniences as Automatic Weather Con- trol, that is as soon as a drop of rain falls on the roof, all openings are automatically closed. A completely push button kitchen in which a whole meal can be served by the push of only one button. Barbara Smith, who showed these conveniences was recognized as the Universal Homemaker No. 1. Other host- esses showing this Dream Home were Della Foster, Carolyn Gilbert, Brenda Griffin, Frankie Matthews, and Pat Taylor. The interior decoration was done by heads of Push Button Living, Camelia James, Becky Mitchell, Arzelle Lyons, and Jerry Kollar .... And now at 5 till twelve, I return you to our main station in New York, capital of U. S. W. CUnited States of Waldl. Come in, New York. Before we go into the building of United States Wald for our midnight celebration, I want to present to you the most univer- versally outstanding personages of each field. First of all, elected Mr. and Mrs. Universe were Fred Stewart and Phoebe Stroupe. Then we have with us the heads of Inter- planetary Finances, Jeanette Scarborough, Annelle Sharon, Pat Simpson, Pat Keziah, Judy Ligon and Leslie Benson, all taking dictation at 200 words a minute. Now I would like to introduce you to the foremost editor of our time, Patsy Mullis, editor-in- chief of Niki. Society editor of the paper is Judy Kelly who is also known as a socialite herself on earth. Now we have Presi- dent of the Commission of Interplanetary Sports, Jimmy King, with his very outstanding and lovely wife, Pam Worley. They were recently elected Husband and Wife of the Year, forming the happiest couple. Three of society's well-known millionaire playboys are Charles Beaty, Jimmy Benton and R. L. Jenkins. It is now 11:59 and all over the universe, pandemonium breaks out. At the U. S. W. Building, Doctor Beth Clinkscales of the U. S. W. gave the dedication of the new to greater striving in science and to the people of each and every planet. All over the universe, rockets are being launched.
