This can best be told by first taking the Rams apart. After the 1953 season they were hurt by the loss of several key men both in the line and in the backfield. With only three of his first-string backs returning, Coach llarris worried about his line, where he had only two of seven boys returning. With this in mind, Coach faced what could be his toughest schedule in the past four vears. First came Georgetown, South Carolina, that team had its heart set on stopping the Rams' winning streak of 25. After the dust had settled the Rams had overcome the once mighty gators. Second came the Parker fligh Tornadoes, a truly strong team, which Harding had managed to beat only once in the past three years. The Rams proved them- selves master once again by playing almost perfect ball for a half, allowing them to gain only one first down, and that on a penalty. The game ended with the score fllarding 12, Parker 0. Next came the team which held the only mark on the threefyear record of the Rams-'iNorth Charlestonf' The 111ue Devils had managed to tie the Hams in Charleston the year before 20 to 20, but this year the Rams were not to be held, and the score was-Harding 20, Charleston 7. Next the game of games was with f'GASTON1A. It was the team to beat. Once again the Rams received the vast amount of letters telling how bad it would be. lt was no true contest, for the Rams' final score read -llarding 26, Gastonia 6. After reaching what you might call the top, the Rams began to start down. ln their new helmets the Rams downed lliekory 28f1-4. VVHAT DAY WAS 1'l'? IT WAS NOVEMBER 13. W1 IO WERE WE PLAYING? The Central High Kit- tens. This was the chance for the Rams to take the city crown for the third time in as many years. But after what seemed like only a few minutes the game was 7 111 over and the score tied at 1 . The last game for the Rams came with Reidsville, North Carolina. The Lions seemed to know just what it took to beat the Rams, which they did 21-0. But not before the Rams had run up the third longest winning streak in the history of North Carolina. CLASS HISTCRY VVhen we seniors made our first appearance at Harding in 1949, we began to form a chain-a chain of events with each year adding a new link of memories and never-to-be-forgotten adventures. Under the leadership of Clifford Austin we began making eager plans for the first link of our chain. We stared in awe at the big, handsome foot- ball players and the beautiful twelfth grade girls. We found it difficult to remember which hall led where and which door opened to our various classes. We began to show our leadership by send- ing Mike Price to the Student Council as junior secretary. As our second year came into view, we became more confident and better known. We were rapidly taking our places as leaders of the junior high school. We took time out from our various activities to send three officers to the Student Council- Mary Anne Gerrard, Mike Price, and judy Medlin. With Yvonne Salem and Eddie Barnette as presi- dents, we made plans for our first big social-the junior-Senior, the best, we believed, that had ever been presented. Our second year was rounded out as thirty of us eighth graders were tapped into the junior Honor Society. With our chain being almost half formed, we entered into our senior year of junior high school by electing Eddie Barnette and jimmy Duncan as class presidents. It was during this year that Gret- chen Grau, one of our members, wrote our famed Alma Mater-one of the greatest tributes ever paid to Harding. Under the leadership of judy Medlin, the junior Honor Society gave a banquet for the junior foot- ball team, city champions of '52. With judy Medlin and Mary Anne Gerrard as presidents, assisted by Margaret Helms as secretary, new strength was added to the junior Student Council. There was no lack of entertainment, however, as the junior social standards committee presented many formals. Our freshman year was climaxed as eight of us starred in the junior Choir's production of Sunlfon- net Sue. Our feeling of uncertainty as sophomores was soon discarded as Margaret Helms led us success- fully through both semesters. This year was a memorable one as several of our boys played on the winning team that defeated Central for the first time and then went on to win the State AA Championship. We again took up our reins of leadership when we sent Mary Anne Gerrard as secretary to the Student Council. As a conclusion, thirteen from our midst were selected for the Senior Honor Society. As we excitedly prepared for the fifth link of our chain, we had one ambition-that of present- ing the biggest and best junior-Senior ever. We began our task by electing Yvonne Salem and jimmy Butler to guide us. In a dream-land of roses, we presented our junior-Senior on May 15 at the Charlotte Woman's Club. During these long months of preparation, however, we con- tinued to take an active part in other school activi- ties: Carol Ann Davis and Sylvia Dority were elected eleventh grade beauties, Louis Farmer was selected for a berth on the All-City football team, Yvonne Salem and judy Medlin were elected Student Council treasurers, and thirteen juniors were selected to be junior Marshals, Doris Mc- Kinney being elected chief marshal and Margaret Helms, assistant chief. Some of our members were widely known in state organizations as Gretchen Grau was elected Secretary of the State Honor Society, Charles Tanner, Treasurer of the State Bible Clubs, and Margaret Helms, Treasurer of the North Carolina Scholastic Press Institute. The finishing touch for our junior year came when ten of us were selected to be Imperatores. Now the formation of our chain was drawing to a close-we were preparing to add the last and the most important link. We found ourselves the leaders: we had no more upperclassmen to look up to. We had formed our chain with happy, yet sometimes difficult steps. We began our last year by electing Doris McKinney, president, john Kirk- patrick, vice-president, Margaret Helms, secretary, and Carol Ann Davis, treasurer. Second semester officers were Mike Price, president, Kay Small, vice-president, Barbara Henderson, secretary, and jimmy Butler, treasurer. CContinucd on page 981 Page Ninety-seven 1 :F CLASS HISTORY We added beauty to our chain when we elected Libby Brogden as our representative to the Caro- linas' Carrousel, Judy Medlin as Gridiron Queen, Barbara Gay and Margaret Helms as twelfth grade beauties, and Gretchen Grau as Miss Acorn. Margaret Helms took over the editorship of the Hi-Lites while Gretchen Grau, editor, and Mike Price, business manager, began planning for the publication of the ACORN. jimmy Butler capably took over the Student Council while Judy Medlinis second semester victory made history. For the first time in ten years a girl had been elected president of the student body. Yvonne Salem, Doris McKin- ney, Gretchen Grau, and Margaret Helms proved able assistants to these two leaders. With Louis Farmer and Bucky Walker as co- captains, the football team ran its unbeaten mark to thirty-five before being defeated by Beidsville Page Ninetv-eight in Western AA Championship play-offs. While tying with Central for the City Championship, the team placed five players-Jimmy Butler, Iimmy Duncan, Louis Farmer, Carol Thomas, and Benjy Thomas-on the All-City team. jimmy Duncan and Louis Farmer were also named for the All- State and Shrine Bowl teams. Now that the senior play-The Pennington Case -the junior-Senior, Class Night, and Baccalau- reate are memories of the past, we come to gradu- ation. The formation of the chain that we began six short years ago is complete. We as individuals are ready to go out into the world to take our places -ready to add more links of happiness and achieve- ments to our chain. Now we are going to try a new and unusual trick. VVQ hope to turn the big clock of time forward so that we may find out what will happen to the great oak of the Class of 1955 when the leaves and nuts finally fall off, never to return to- gether again. After getting our magic oak leaf carpet in the air we must decide where to stop first on our world-wide tour to track our class. Since our class left a name for itself in the field of sports let's try that first. We quickly arrive at Podunk junction for the 1965 Boot Bowl. This is a world-famous game between the low-top shoes and the high- top shoes. Such famous football heroes as Jim- my Duncan, Jerry Cheek, Gene Counts, Doug Shivar, Bobby VVatson, Nick Nicholson and Carroll Thomas are here. However, not all of our great football team is here. Others signed to play Hpron ball like Louis Lumpy', Farmer, captain of the Green Bay Snackers. George Maydanis and Benjy Thomas also star on this team. Yvonne Salem is the mascot. After leaving football our eyes focus on the basketball scene. Here we also find many Harding boys who turned pro . With all the flu and colds going around many famous -coaches are worried, but not Earl Wick, coach of the Weknow U. team. Thanks to the fine bench-warming of Eddie Barnette, Iohn Kirkpatrick, Gene Black, and Conley Green his players are in good shape. Page One Hundred Eight Our class of ,55 has also contributed to our national game-baseball. Larry Earp and Bryon Bullard are two of the greater stars with a desire to climb to the top. Says Coach Clif- ford Ewing of the Biddeville Biddies, Those two are the greatest bat boys in the leaguefl On our next hop we find ourselves at the home of the automobile industry-Detroit. Here we find the newest contender to the field -The Bennettmobile. Our own Johnny Ben- nett is the President of this firm. His leading engineers are Ned Gilliam and Lee Phillips who are teamed with designers Bob Thrasher and Herman Lands. John Grab-a-gear Grimes, Benny ScreechV' Davis, and Frank HBod,' Capps test drive these famous cars. We also find that even one of our girls is now a business tycoon. Ellen Martin is pres- ident of the Neverite Fountain Pen. This pen is not guaranteed for two years, or one year or even six months. In fact, it is not even guaranteed. Buth Ann Eluharty and Doris Frye have started a new T.V. program-Us the Folks Whisper. This is a sequel to the famous We the People Speak. Among the latest speakers were Becky Caudle who spoke on The Im- pression that Horseback Riding Left with Me and Dr. Shelvie Sims spoke on Knife Can Be Beautiful. Another T.V. program that is growing in popularity is 'iThe Problem Panel. The M. C. is Eugene Hopper and the panel con- sists of joe Edwards, Mona Blackwelder, Bayon Eesperman, and Tommie Dover. PRCPHECY Our panel solved all the romance problems of Robert Campbell and Bill King but Bill Shumaker has posed the only question which stopped the panel. We will not tell you what Bill's problem is because all of us have heard of it, but we think that it is about time he cleared it up himself! For our next look at our former classmates we have to fly over the deep-blue sea to the famous old city of Cairo, Egypt. Here we find that many of our former cronies have made a name for themselves in business. Gretchen Crau and Libby Brogden both work as salesgirls in Mordeci's Haberdashery. Charles Tanner owns Tanner's Biddie Bar, which specializes in pure African Biddie cloth. This cloth is woven in to beautiful Bid- die sweaters. Margaret Helms, Anne Baker, jenny Norman and Carol Davis model these lovely sweaters. Harding Tuttle and David Norwood peddle African goat's milk in the narrow streets of this old city. Nancy Walsh models at Montaldo's now where Melvyn Helms is floor walker. Glenda Outen has the job of spraying the sidewalks with that vile perfume every morning. As we return home we see in the vacant lot next to Irwin Creek the new circus, owned by David Allen. One of the main attractions is Jimmy Books the lion-tamer. Bill Mouchet turned out to be a clown and Larry VVelch and Johnny Teat are the strong men. The Flora-Dora girls are Faye Love, Joyce Hopper, Viva Lee Kistler, Carolyn Copeland and Doris Bell. Iudy Medlin is the fat lady and Doris McKinney is the skinny lady. Uur trip is nearly over. We have not been able to track down all of our class because they were out of reach of our magic carpet. We have seen, however, that our family tree has branched out over the world and will continue to grow in the great tradition of Harding High School. - MIKE PRICE, Class Prophet sesgiaifw sgfiwrw Page One Hundred Nine SENIOR CLASS POEM Wfliat clo we clo now-where else to go? You have been victorious while others have failed, and you now enter fields of higher service in the world. As you leave, may you take with you a love that will dispel hatred, pardon to heal injury, faith to surmount doubt and the light of truth to conquer the darkness of error and falsehood. May God grant that you shall be instruments of peace, placing within your hearts a true sense of the brotherhood of all humanity.
