We wish to thank him for the music which he has instilled in many of his students. His patience and untiring efforts to help students will never be forgotten. He has built the music department from one band with nineteen members to the present senior band of 41 members and also a junior and beginning band. Under his leadership, the senior band has obtained new uniforms. Because of the inspiration and encouragement that he has given to us, we would like to award him the highest honor that is in our power to bestow. Family Man' Carpenter? 3.. In spite of falling curtains and flying rolling pins. the seniors, with the help of their director. Mr. Bartlett, presented their play. Mountain Ga1 , on December 6 and 8 in a typical Ozark Mountain atmosphere. The play revolved around Ma lSharon Johnstonl and Pa lJerry Pemberton? Lindsay on their old farm. It began when Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Kfiichard Whitaker and Blanche Petersonl had car trouble and came to the Lindsays for help. Here they met Oby, the hired man, KDick Kellerl and his prospective bride Sophronia lBetty Johnstonl. They also met Catalpa. the lazy teen-age daughter lArtie Cook! and Dee-Dee lKar1ene Howsel a little orphan girl whose biggest wish in life was to get an education. The Gordons immediately fell in love with Dee-Dee and. after much persuasion, took her back to the city with them, only to find later. through the help of a lady lawyer, Miss McKay Uoann Gokeel, and Lawyer Perrin lEd Penoyerl that Dee-Dee was their lost daughter. 117... Seniors: Cool Ones Cool Kats! 'l'hat's us-the Seniors of '57! Amidst all the Blue Mondays and hard Tuesdays we 'have finally reached the Peak of Blueberry Hill. Greasing the way for our slippin' and sliidin' were our panic maker, Dale Haveng vice-panic maker, Gerry C-ongletong Scratcher, Sharon ,Iohnsftong mint kleeper, Pat Jofhnston and our student council repre- sentatives Dick Keller and Don Lauer assisted by those Groovin' two: Mr. C Fats I Baker and Miss f Marianne j Andrews. There must have been Ninety-Ninfe Ways that we added the green to our money tree. Among them were: Do-nut sales, eats at football and basketball games, a scratch pad sale, and a bracelet sale. ,Iarnuary I9, we presented our Senior Caper and those oats, Deanna Bradley and Eddie Mathews reigned as King and Queen. December 6 and 8, we gave with our Senior Play Mountain Gal . When February 2 rolled 'round all the cats were All Shook Up at our rock 'n' rdll talent show featuring Miss Elvis Presley . We wo-n Third prize for our Homecoming float tabbed You kill 'em, we'll bury 'emu and our Long Tall Sally Patsy Johnston served on the Queen's Court. April l2, most of the Senior boys and teachers need- ted a Transfusion as we presented a hilarious Donkey Basketball game. Our Party Doll Karlene Howse was our candidate for Miss Michigan Yvinter Queen. We attended College Day and on March 27, we attended Career Day where the Senior girls were given the outest tea ever! Then we cats -and chicks boarded the Calypso Boat for New York City Where You'll Never, Never Know What a ball we cut! Farewell, all cats of birdland. Dig ya later! Meanwhile, Hang low .e.. M Weill go! Co! Go! Go, Cats, Go! -19- Junior Class Qfficers ll. to r.l D. Miller. treasurer: B. Juilleret, vice-president: P. Graham, president: M. Tippett. student council representative: S. Terpening, secretary. Juniors: Jivin' Ones The crazy class of '58 really went ape during the school year of 1956 - 57. We started the year by selling eats at the first football game. When the homecoming game rolled 'round we gave with the most and came up with a second prize for our float. Our Sadie Hawkins Dance on October 27 was the sneakiest ever. and it gave us a chance to add to our green in the treasury. But. man, don't you think fOr a minute we were loafing between all these big events! We gave with bread. candy and bake sales which also added to our financial standing. Then came the day we went to Petoskey to learn more about becoming B.M.0.C.'s. That was College Day, and it was the most. By this time we were all showing off our sharp class rings which we had received at the beginning of the prison term. We had a cider' sale that really gassed most of the residents of our fair city but we had fun doing it. and again added to our money tree. We struggled through the brain derbies and found ourselves in the second semester. Again we traveled to Petoskey, this time for Career Day. About this time of year we were slippin' and slidin' through our school work. And why? Man. we were working on our real gone junior play. which kept us pretty busy. Wd gave with the play on the 28th, 29th and 30th of March. Close on the heels of our play was the Junior-Senior Banquet, which was held in the Perry Hotel on April 6. Then for about a month we were real gone on the J-Hofp, held in the grym on May ll. By the end of the school year, our class was really droolin' with schoolin'. 'cause our kats and kittens were real gone on science and math. This was proven by the size of our physics and algebra II classes, the biggest yet! Dig you later. 'gator. Another year of school has come and gone, which C.Y.C. has enjoyed im- mensely. We started the school year by entering the float. Calvary, in the homecoming parade. It consisted of three white crosses mounted on a base of ground hemlock. Calvary was the most unusual float in the parade and truly it was a silent testimony of the Christian spirit in C.Y.C. During the winter a sliding party at Walter Cole's was planned. The night was wonderful and the snow was just right. About fifty people attended this party. The officers for this school year '56-'57 have been David Halter. president: Blanche Peterson. vice-president: Ruth Halter. secretary-treasurer: and Anna Cole. publicity chairman. The sponsors are Mrs. Kenneth Shinn and Mr. Lyle Hoover. Many different churches have been represented by both ministers and mem- bers. New chorus books were purchased from which many new songs have been learned. C.Y.C.'s constitution has been reworded. C.Y.C. meetings have been times of spiritual refreshment and will continue by God's Grace to be so. -31- l Rampage Staff Back row: Kl to :J H. Brager-Larsen, Miss Corey, K. Howse, S. Rampage This year the journalism class worked hard in an attempt to present the students of Harbor Springs High School a better-than-ever yearbook. One of our biggest improvements is the new and better grade cover. We in the journalism class sincerely hope that this 1957 RAMPAGE will serve as a happy memorandum to the graduates ot 57 and all future graduates. We extend our appreciation to our advisor, Miss Corey. who was greatly re- sponsible for the success of this yearbook. Also we give our sincere thanks to Mr. Paul Verseput of the Emmet County Graphic for his cooperation in printing the RAMPAGE of 57 , and to Mr. Voight Troup, our photographer. -.38.. a 1 a I Rams' Roundup Staff Back row: 11. to r.J H. Rams' Roundup A group ot 19 enthusiastic juniors and seniors began journalism class at Harbor High this year. Six more interested juniors and one senior joined us the second semester. One of our main projects has been to publish the school paper.. the RAMS' ROUNDUP. under the guidance ot our class adviser. Miss Lois Jane Corey. We also helped to raise funds for the RAMPAGE by making and selling programs at the homecoming game. Blanche Peterson was editor of the BAMS' ROUNDUP. with the entire journalism class helping in the great work ot putting the paper out. We received a third class honor rating from the National Scholastic Press Association tor the first semester. Caroline Sterly. exchange editor. was kept busy with twenty-one schools on our exchange list. We exchange papers so that we will know what is going on in other schools. and how other papers are organized and published. ..3Q.- Future Farmers of America Back row: fl. to :J R, Lasley. C. Allen. Agriculture Building During the past years the community has been undecided as to whether we need a farm shop building for the boys. In the summer of 1955 it was voted down. A revcte was held later which passed unamously. Construction started in the fall of 1955. It was ready tor use in the fall of 1956. The hui'ding is in a rectangular form and is ninety-one feet long and forty-two feet wide. It is split into three parts. There is a study. room with a dimension of twenty-one by thirty-two feet, which is for study. and work on farm records and note books. There is a storeroom where all our personal belongings are stored under lock and key at all times. Then there is the shop, the 'place of work. Its dimensions are sixty-six by torty feet. We have room for about twelve tractors and many other items such as trailers, fish shanties, buzzurigs, and threshing machines. The approximate total cost is thirty thouand dollars Cwithout the toolsl. The heat and lights run from the school with a very sturdy pipe formation. We are all proud of our new building and surely are glad to have it in which to work and hold our meetings. ....41.. Future Homemczkers of America Back row: ll to r.D V. Thompson. M. Lightfoot. J.
