UUH PRIHCIPHVS HIESSHGE Members of the Class of 1949: Congratulations on the successful completion of your high school course. Your high school careers are now a matter of record. Your accomplishments of the past few years have been of deep interest to Several among you have achieved high scholastic honors. Some of you have attained recognition through dramatics, others have displayed fi t wish musical talent, and several have excelled in athletics. My rs for you is that these accomplishments may be the forerunner of many others in the years to come. My second wish is that as the years speed by you will recall not only the achievements but also the friendships you have made, the opportunities you have had of working and planning together, and the final Joy you share in your graduation. Your high school days, mellowed by time, will assume their true perspective, I know, as one of the most glorious experiences of your life. May this yearbook be a constant reminder to you of all that was best and help you recall with pride your days at H. C. S. ZJWWQ DEDICATION Now, that we Seniors are on the brink of graduation, we wish to express our gratitude and thanks to Irs. Mack. It was she who so conscientiously pulled us through our last three years of Social Studies and who in our senior year, advised and coached our activities, problems and Post Graduate occupations. , It is to Irs. Elva Mack, that we the class of 1949 gratefully dedicate our yearbook, The Chehocton. 3 2 sm Editor - in - Chief ------ -- - ---- Ivan Kinne Assistant Editors -- ----- ------ Roswitha Martz Gilbert Banker Business Managers ----------- ---- Margaret Young Richard Long Advertising Manager ------------- Norma Kills Assistants -------- --- ----------- Grace Gisoldl Junior Representatives Elsie Cook Janet Brannen Jacqueline Johnson Joyce Wright Richard Miller Richard Martin ---------- Helen Hempstead Leander Snyder gacmoiafg can I M ERS OF President Clerk - Mr Mr Mr lr Mr BOARD OF EDUCATION Mr. W. During the short years at H. C. S., we have experienced times of pleasure and times of sorrow, good moments and bad moments, but, in the end, all has worked out for the best. Now, we are leaving, but let us pause a moment to review the events of the past years. It seems but a short time ago that we, as Fresh- men, entered the portals of rooms 307 and 315. June 28, 1949 seemed then very distant, but our Freshman year was quite uneventful, so far as class activities go. Even so, under the capable supervisio P id t Dou las Dewey and our advisor, of our res en , g , Mrs. Palmer, we held a successful tag day and en- joyed s class picnic on Point Mountain. The next year we found that we had risen to the exalted position of Sophomores. We, also, found that our class was diminishing in size. Many of our friends had not made the grade, or had left school. we had gained an important addition in the However, 1 form of Richard Long, our present President. Gilbert 'Pete' Banker was elected President and Mrs. Palmer was again elected advisor. During this year, we originated the idea of showing movies for class profi 1 t and we held several tag days. That spring our as activity was a very enjoyable and profitable round and square dance. Our Junior year was a busy year. That year Margaret Young was President and Mrs. Chamberlain was our advisor. We had dances after the football games, showed movies, held a square dance, and had tag days ti Our most important activity, however, was selec ng our class rings. Over this, there was much disoussi and very informal debate, but the rings were finally ordered and in lhreh we were the proudest class ever saw. In June, we decorated the auditorium for the Seniors and participated in the graduation ceremo- nies. 'Jackie' Johnson presented our Nadvice to the d at seniors' and accepted the key. The honor guar s commencement were Norma Kille, Beverly White, Dorothy Ferris Janet Brannon, Richard Martin, Harold Reichman, Gilbert Banker, and Ivan Kinne. The present district comprises 14 former districts from which students are brought to the school in district- owned buses. A spacious auditorium with a seating capacity of 1000 affords ample opportunity for school entertainments, concerts, lectures, and community activities. t The faculty consists of 56 teachers. Courses of study in the high school include English, history, mathematics, science, commercial subjects, French, Spanish and Latin, home economics, art, music, and industrial arts. Adeouate attention is given to health education, two teachers and a school nurse being in charge of this work. The large gymnasium is equipped with modern apparatus adapted to children of all ages. An athletic field in excellent condition affords ample opportunity for tennis, track, baseball, and football, as well as outdoor swimming. The field is lighted for evening sports. A kindergarten has been added in response to local demand. There are 55 children in this department who attend in two sessions, morning and afternoon, thus allowing individual attention to be given to needs and individuality of each child. Here is a school which is so well organized as to give student an opportunity to develop his talents in that field of learning in which he is most interested and has special abilities to that he may become a contented and useful member of society 13 every the end in th ing Spee le G G-1 2 -P -P 4 : u 0 .M 0 '71 I His Bank H S o 3 pulling Horse d O11 Raym en, Jan . A puppet show, ggggh and Judy, sponsored by the Juniors added to the gay Christmas spirit of the school. However, projects to build up the treasury weren't the only things the Juniors did. In 506. beautifully decorated with a tree, ribbons and hemlock boughs, the Juniors and their homeroom teachers enjoyed themselves at a fine Christ- mas Party. 18 S , First Row: A. Connelly, E. Student Council Activities The 1948-49 Student Council had a successful year. There were many things that the Council did with the co-operation of the students which had been left undone in years before. The first was to amend the constitution of 1940 which was obsolete in several parts. Some of our other accomplishments were! to place Student Council suggestion boxes in every homeroom, to establish a student court Cwhlch although far from perfect proved effective in most casesj, to sell Hancock Pennants at the football games to increase the amount in our treasury, to present several assembly programs, and to join the National A350018- tion of Student Councils. Through this National Assoc1at1on,we received many benefits, including several handbooks and a subscription to a student magazine. We,also.Jo1ned the Susauenango Rural Central and High School Student Council Association at the mid-winter meeting ln ' February. As members of the Susquenango Assoc1at1on,we were in position to exchange assembly orograms with neighboring schools, as well as Joining in sending delegates to the national convention at Cincinnati this summer. 25 Standing: Miss-Doolittle, D. All the fun of the school year and its work, the people who have moved to it and away from it, the ones who have received honors, and those who hold important offices in the clubs of the school, the work of these clubs, and the various projects of the different departments of the school, the senior play, the recitals, the advent of the kindergarten turtle, the snowball casualties, those who have perfect attendance, and the headline days when school is out because of snow, these, and all the other events which pack our school days, the JOURNALISM CLUB strives to record in its FLASH column, printed each week in the Hancock Herald, and its magazine the SPOTLIGHT published several times a year through the cooperation of the Commercial Department. This year's editor, Miss Dorothy Ferris, with her staff and her reporters and typists has done an excellent Job in making this year's record fairly accurate and complete. 26 I im... 6 First Row: E. Keel, 32 U Lt last, we are seniors. we are one of the smallest classes in the history of Hancock Central School, but we are very active. 'Dick' Long is our President, Roswltha Marta is Vice President, and those old standbys Norma Kille and Virginia Severt are class secretary and treasurer, with M s. Mack as our advisor. Under the direction of Irs. Chamberlain, and with the cooperation of these officers, we staged a very successful senior play, 'le Shook the Family Tree'. We have, during the year, sold candy, put on several assemblies, and attempted to publish a yearbook. This pro- ject of a yearbook, we hope, will be carried on by succeeding classes. Through a kind donation of time, services and food by Mrs. Marta, we put on a very profitable and very delicious spaghetti supper at the Solitude Inn. All these events and activities were to help us finance the annual trip to Washington and to defray the expenses of graduation. At the close of our high school days, we wish to thank Mrs. Mack, Mrs Chamberlain, Mr. Banker and all our teachers and friends who have helped make our moments at Hancock Central both happy and profitable. We also hope that all succeeding Senior Classes will continue to uphold the tradi- tions of H. C. S. I i f'f 7 Yxqefg, .
