foreword “Parting is such sweet sorrow.” With this phrase prevailing in their minds, the staff of the 1963 Hamptonian has attempted, since early Sep¬ tember, to compile a book that would serve to arouse, always, fond memories of the years of studying at H.I. From our first day on the campus, stretch¬ ing, seemingly everlasting, to our day of gradua¬ tion, we have acquired a wealth of memories that shall ever remain . . . Cheering at the football and basketball games . . , The walks along the water¬ front in the fall and in the spring . , . The Prol)a- tion activities . . . The Musical Arts Society pres¬ entations • . . The nights in the grill with nodiing to do? . . . and, as always, the midnight cram¬ ming sessions. All of these have made their contri¬ butions to making us, the students, more adaptable, indeed more flexible, as we prepare to step out into the world that exists beyond the gates of Hampton. With these few introductions and previews, we have gained an insight, through sheer suggestive hints; of what extends, what awaits us, beyond those gates. And therefore, with a background of this we, the senior class, feeling adequately prepared to meet the challenge of a world in transformation, depart with affectionate memories, remembering never to forget the source of tliese memories; our home by die Sea, Hampton Institute.
