Memories forced us of fhe Class of '5l fo feel somewhaf sympafhefic as we focused our crifical eye on fhe numerous prospecfively gross Fresh- men. Approximafely one year earlier was a dafe perhaps fo be remem- bered buf now forgoffen as we imagined our favorife fargef for oppres- sion obviously uneasy under fhe influence of a diminufive gray cap. Pos- sibly a few of us wished no parf as formenfors, buf for fhe maiorify fhe role of Sophomore was ideal. While examining fhe compefency of fhe new men, our affenfion ab- rupfly passed fo our own Freshman Class of old. Day by day, we discov- ered each fime wifh disappoinfmenf fhaf anofher from our ranlcs had failed fo refurn. Af firsf for a few fhe missing faces somewhaf blighfed fhe occasion, buf affer several slow weeks had passed, fhe reducfion in size seemed an incenfive in drawing fogefher fhe Class of '5l. For several years due fo abnormal condifions, classes of unusual size had begun four years of college, buf now fhe frend was baclc fo normal. A group of Freshmen represenfing new blood mafriculafed, and an ac- comodafing Sophomore Class aided in fheir guidance. Well-supporfed feams arrayed in fhe Garnef and Gray won consisfenfly on fhe gridiron and hardwood. These sfimuli cerfainly fhe upholding, if nof surpassing, of fhe well-lcnown l-lampden-Sydney spirif of years before. As fhe final monfhs draw quickly fo a ,close we, fhe Class of '5I, feel perhaps overly imporrfanf. We find ourselves in a new world more deeply conscious of fhe value of uprighf characfer. We feel fhaf now as men we should be prepared fo fake our places upon fhe pedesfal, where as Juniors accepfing responsibilify wifh infelligence and sincerify, we musf sfand as an example fo fhose who follow. To the loyal members of the start much credit must be given. Without their untiring aid and willingness to deny themselves ot sleep in the wee hours preceding each deadline day, these last Tour issues could never have become a reality. The success of The Garnet has entailed cooperation and harmony among its workers. lt has been the result ot the combined etlorts and consolidation ot various individual ideas. lt has not been the product ot one, Rather, it has been an activity in which each student has had the opportunity to exhibit his own particular talent in the literary field, lt has become an integral part of campus lile as an instrument of tree speech. It is a periodical published by the students: and it is they who are re- sponsible tor its success. The Garnet is the students' own magazine. 415' Q CHARLES WILLARD HART Business Manager 1. - lidmpden- Sydney Cvllege 95-4 mmm ll rm lslx IDIWS IEIUIE M vtmumul ur llntvtlntlm Alu ultn ml Jun! ullrvtl AIO Awlnllul Iwltv tlnusu uvluurs II Ili llmmv luvu llllm lv lu! Bill Balas led ali scorers as he has Tor The pasT Three years in Durham. ' ReTurning To sTaTe compeTiTion, The Red and Gray cagers Turned in Two lopsided vicTories over Lynchburg College and The Medical Col- lege oT Virginia. The Tollowing game was a 'musT on The I-Iampden-Sydney schedule. The opponenT was Roanolce College deTending sTaTe champions and The same club which adminisTered Two deTeaTs To Coach ProcTor's charges lasT year. OperaTing like a veTeran in The pivoT shoT, Bill McLean Tore The neTs wiTh nineTeen poinTs To aid The Tiger cause. Four nighTs laTer Coach ProcTor Took his boys To The Blues Armory in Richmond Tc- meeT The Spiders again. IT will be remembered ThaT Hampden-Sydney had never won a game in The Armory, and local papers. recognizing This TacT, had again Taken The Bengals lighTly. Unleashing a brillianf scoring punch and demonsTraTing The virTues oT Tine Teamwork and spiriT The Bengals upseT a high-Tavored V. P. l. Team by a score oT 64-58. This vicTory was all The more remarlcable when iT was realized ThaT Two oT The Tiger sTarTers were playing wiTh iniuries which would have benched lesser men. Bill McLean had a badly sprained anlcle and Wyllys Taylor was olaving wiTh a splinT on his Tinger which he had brolcen The day beTore. BoTh oT These boys saw TorTy Tull minuTes oT acTion and needless To say ThaT wiThouT Them vicTory would have been impossible. However The superior heighT oT The boys Trom Blaclcsburg began To Tell and aT halT-Time The score was Tied 34-34. Early in The second halT The Tigers were sTunned by The loss oT Bill Balas via The Toul rouTe. This loss was somewhaT compensaTed by The loss oT Two Tech sTarTers around Tive minuTes laTer. Meanwhile The Tireless reTrieving oT Jimmy l-lunT and McLean on boTh baclcboards was helping To insure a Hampden-Sydney Triumph.
