Language Why does any school offer courses in foreign languages? The answer is that students who are inclined to be more tolerant of other nationalities and to recognize them as people much like themselves. Latin, Spanish, French, German, and Russian are offered for eager, knowledge- thirsty students. Not only the language, but also the dress, customs, and history of the country are delved into and examined. Classtime couldn 7 be this discouraging.

One of the lighter moments of a Comp. V. class with Miss Fisher. English Strong emphasis is placed on English at Hammond High School: It is the one course necessary to succeed in almost any profession. Two objectives are apparent in the English department; effective communication and literary apprecia- tion. Developing an effective means of communicating means learning to speak and write in a precise manner. An appreciation of fine literature and knowledge of how to recognize such literature are rewarding traits of anyone. Mr. Preston , Department Head, takes notes on students during classtime.

Math Under the direction of Miss Thelma Abell, the Mathematics Department of Hammond High School carries on its goal of advancing stu- dents in their field which has become one of the most important studies for the future. Math has been called the language of science or some- times defined as a science of numbers. It is an intricate, precise and challenging study which develops an orderly mind. Top; Miss Abell casts an approving glance toward one of her students. Left; Is it Indian signs of Algebra Mr. Bennett? Bottom: Math students show interest in solving problems.
