This book turns the spotlight on these faces showing their differences as they live the part of a student. They may be relaxed, happy or annoyed in their many sided lives but all act as one in forming the student body of Hammond High School. The Faces of Activity Football cheering sections, initiations, talks in the halls and monitor duty — all give the student a form of activity. The Faces of Study and Fun After studying in the library, little disagreements, and being a finalist in the National Merit English contest, a student finds time for dress up dances and bringing the team in for a victory. Faces with Meaning Expressions reveal many things about a person. A solemn face might be worn by a band mem- ber as the “Star Spangled Banner” is being played. Or a happy face sits in the cafeteria at lunch, on the bleachers at a game or in the speech room. Hammond High School contains many faces with many meanings. The Faces of Enjoyment and Creativity A Fun Fair offers enjoyment for those who like to perform, eat or play games, but a school room offers a place to create a theme, a beautiful dive or a batch of cookies. Top Kat members listen to their sponsors as to their next project for earning money. Clubs Hammond High Clubs add worthwhile activities to the student’s life. A special learning comes whether a student is in French club playing Mille Borne, Spanish Club listening to records, earning money in Top Cat club or studying the basic lines of movement in expanded arts. Clubs should be a part of every student’s life. Expanded Arts Club decides on their new officers. n i j The French Club gazes admiringly at the replica of the e iff el tower. Folk 15 sings a song during club period. Clubs strive to achieve a definite purpose for each student. They may offer ancient folk lore, business practices not learned in class, a little more about German or minature modeling skills. 14 Could that be Hitler hiding behind the cover of a German reader? Members of the Miniature Modeling Club assemble replicas of sports cars. H-Men go over the accounts with Mr. Papais. Speech Arts members learn about diction. Hammond High clubs offer participation just as classes do. Speech Arts members do phonic exercises as H-mer ponder on ways to earn money. Chess club members learn to play the game during club periods just as a future nurse listens to a speaker talk on the benefits of nursing. The Future Nurses Club waits anxiously for another speaker. The game of chess is mastered during club periods. 17 The search for knowledge with the long hours of preparation, constitutes an invariable phase of our curriculum. Courses change, teachers come and go, but the basic pattern of learning has endured through many periods of modernization. The student of Hammond High strives toward the education that has become such a necessary part of all our lives today. The addition of many new courses has been of invaluable assistance to students who want to widen their fields of knowledge. The basic pattern in our curriculum is present as it has always been, but it is the minor changes that give our school the growth necessary to an ever-changing, ever-expanding world. Art Art Projects Holiday spirit at Hammond High School is given an added boost by the art students. The festive decora- tions that adorned the halls during the Christmas season were due to their craftsmanship. Students with a creative mind are especially at home among the paints, paper, and glitter of the art room. Christmas display in work room was put together by Miss Schubkegel (above photo) and her assistants. Tt jHgjQKAjrf g Tjt! § — ij I 1 ’’■5c V ; -jsLj m .1 ! Hammond High stu- dents are prepared to occupy a useful and profitable spot in the realm of the business world. Mr. Schubert, Department Head, offers his experienced skill. Speed and accuracy’ in typing will be a must to the secretary. One of the lighter moments of a Comp. V. class with Miss Fisher. English Strong emphasis is placed on English at Hammond High School: It is the one course necessary to succeed in almost any profession. Two objectives are apparent in the English department; effective communication and literary apprecia- tion. Developing an effective means of communicating means learning to speak and write in a precise manner. An appreciation of fine literature and knowledge of how to recognize such literature are rewarding traits of anyone. Mr. Preston , Department Head, takes notes on students during classtime. Language Why does any school offer courses in foreign languages? The answer is that students who are inclined to be more tolerant of other nationalities and to recognize them as people much like themselves. Latin, Spanish, French, German, and Russian are offered for eager, knowledge- thirsty students. Not only the language, but also the dress, customs, and history of the country are delved into and examined. Classtime couldn 7 be this discouraging. Math Under the direction of Miss Thelma Abell, the Mathematics Department of Hammond High School carries on its goal of advancing stu- dents in their field which has become one of the most important studies for the future. Math has been called the language of science or some- times defined as a science of numbers. It is an intricate, precise and challenging study which develops an orderly mind. Top; Miss Abell casts an approving glance toward one of her students. Left; Is it Indian signs of Algebra Mr. Bennett? Bottom: Math students show interest in solving problems. Under the direction of Mr. Jay Wood the Sci- ence Department offers many basic and ad- vanced courses. The fundamental courses are biology, health, and safety, physics, and chemistry. For scientifically inclined students there are accelerated classes. The study of Science can hold answers to many problems. The study habits of the Science Department includes experimentation and taking notes in class. Science Under the direction of Miss Johnson the Social Studies department offers clues to the perplexing problems of today and tomorrow. Our economic, geographic, and social world is subjected to ringing debates, enlightening lectures, and animated discussions as teachers endeavor to illuminate the Above: Miss Johnson looks to her Government class jor participation. Home-Ec The Home-Economics department is headed by Miss Georgie Thiel and Mrs. Martha Hugus. In clothing I, stu- dents learn the basic fundamentals of clothing construction and good grooming. In Clothing 2 and 3 these skills are applied in making suits and dresses for any occasion. Foods classes teach the basic arts of cooking and nutrition. There are also classes offering the study and functions of certain ingredients and experimental cooking. This year the Home- maker of the Year award went to Miss Connie Brazina. Students complete many projects in cooking class. Student Activities “Activities help a person to make his mind, body and soul stronger. They are as much a part of the student’s life as are his studies.” Homecoming Perhaps the biggest activity of the Hammond High School year is Homecoming, which most of the student body attends. This year the traditional bonfire was cancelled, but the parade was glorious with the senior float taking first place. The crowning of the queen, Linda Sherry and her court: Jane Boyajian and Jane Dycus, Senior Princesses; Cindy Long, Junior Princess; Dawn Dorsey, Sophomore Princess; and Linda Rooney, Freshman Princess, was the stellar half- time event. The cats tried their hardest and played what was said to be their best game, but couldn’t break away for a victory. After the game everyone attended the Homecoming soc-hop which featured the Mystics; then went home to wait for next year when the Homeco ming events would again take place; that is, all except the seniors who re- membered this was their last Homecoming at Ham- mond High. Washington — New York Trip This year’s juniors and seniors had a chance to spend a week in Washington and New York City with other area students. In Washington the students visited such historical sites as the Washington Monument, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, Arlington Cemetery, Wax Museum, Smithsonian Institute, and Mt. Vernon. New York City was the next stop on the trip. Students viewed the awe- some sights of the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, and the United Nations’ Building. A walking tour of Chinatown was also included. An evening on Broad- way best describes Saturday night in New York. Stu- dents viewed the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall and then were free to spend the night “on the town.” Some stayed to see “The Great Race,” while others caught a sub- way to Greenwich Village. One of the most beautiful sights seen on the trip was that of President Kennedy’s grave and the eternal flame. Students learned an important lesson from Michigan City pnsioners. The band adds enjoyment to many auditorium sessions. Many of us have enjoyed the adventures of C. J. Albrecht, introduced here by Lance Springs. Auditoriums During the school year, students anxiously await audito- rium sessions to see many different faces that cross the stage. Entertaining programs are always given by the vocal department and the band. This year Folk 15 not only entertained, but also taught some history. Adventures are offered each year by C. J. Albrecht, with his movies of environment study, and this year an important lesson on the evils of crime was offered by prisoners from Michigan City. The 1966 “Mardi Gras”, held in the Civic Cen- ter, was followed by more fun and excitement at the after-prom party, morning breakfasts, and the Dunes. Baccalaureate Service and Commencement Ex- ercises in the Civic Center officially closed the year’s activities and ended high school days for the Class of 1 966. Senior Play “The Perfect Idiot”, a farce by Eunice and Grant Atkinson, was presented as the annual Senior Play on March 18 at 8:00 p.m. The story is about Dan Tennyson, much- despised Boy-Genius of Center High, who “corrupts the whole school” in his attempt to become socially acceptable. A schoolwide crisis arises when the brawny but brainless football star, “puff” Witomski, is disqualified from all ath- letic events. Dan alone can save the team by tutoring Puff; but in return for this favor, Dan demands that the kids at school make him appear popular. Hammond High School offers almost every avail- able athletics activity to its students. Through participation in swimming, tennis, golf, baseball, cross country, track, football, wrestling, basketball, and newly added gymnastics; students learn the meaning of athletic honesty, hard work, fair play, and satisfaction. The victory was a decisive one, but the Wildcats were forced to forfeit the game because an ineligible player was used in the final minutes. Although the infraction probably would have gone unnoticed, the results of not reporting such an error would have been disastrous for the Wildcats in all sports. Coach Krueger should be commended for his honesty in handling this touchy situation. Hammond High, hosting a fine Whiting team, won this contest 12 — 6, but needed a goal-line stand in the final few minutes of play to preserve the victory. Next on the schedule for Hammond was the long awaited journey to East Chicago Roosevelt for a duel between two of the state’s top teams. As expected, the game was a hard fought contest. After the smoke had cleared, however, The Wild- cats had gone down to defeat 14 — 0. All-Stater Jim Demokas sprints out in a pre-game warm-up, as rugged junior tackle Bill Schleizer looks on. The Wildcats met defeat at Valparaiso, but exploded to a 27 — 7 victory over the Clark Pioneers the following week. With the losing streak snapped, the Cats defeated East Chi- cago Washington 20 — 12 on a freezing evening in the Steel City. A large crowd was on hand to watch the Morton Gov- ernors, Indiana’s top team, in action against our Cats. The half ended with our upset minded Wildcats on top 7 — 6. Morton could not be contained, however, and scored twice in the final period to beat our Cats 22 — 7. The Wildcats tripped Noll to end the season with a 5 — 4 record. Fugged forward Tim Michaw (22) controls the boards against Noll. With three regulars returning from the 1965 Sectional Championship team, Rodney Ford, Terry Fischer, and Tim Michaw, the preseason outlook for this year’s squad was that of happy anticipation. With a very demanding schedule in front of the Wildcats, a successful season would indeed be something of which to be proud. The Wildcats opened the season against Indianapolis Washington, the defending State Champions. Despite a top flight performance, Hammond bowed 86 — 75. Clark provided the Cats with their first win, Hammond winning 72 — 56. Following the Clark game were three important clashes which would give an idea of the future for the Wildcats. Hammond nipped Lafayette Jeff 58 — 56, trounced Gary Tolleston 65 — 51, but finally ran out of steam, losing to highly tauted Michigan City 81 — 72 after leading the Red Devils for three quarters. Hammond High added another feather to its cap, defeating Morton 75 — 57, and Tech 79 — 62 to win the Hammond Holiday Tourney. Following the Tourney, the Wildcats defeated Horace Mann of Gary 84 — 55, Gary Emerson 71 — 56, and respected East Chicago Roosevelt 74 — 62 before running into Val- paraiso. 60 Gunner Wyman has a few words with team before play resumes. Following the Tourney, the Wildcats defeated Horace Mann of Gary 84 — 55, Gary Emerson 71 — 56, and re- spected East Chicago Roosevelt 74 — 62 before running into Valparaiso. Playing in ancient Boucher Gym, the Cats suffered the same fate as top rank Gary Froebel and East Chicago Washington, losing 60 — 58 to the host Vikings. Returning to the Civic Center, Hammond High pounded Gary Wallace 82 — 61, then journeyed to Whiting where they gave the Oilers an 88 — 50 licking. Bishop Noll was next to fall under the ax, bowing 64 — 57 on their home court. Guard Terry Fischer drives doumcourt in the unforgettable East Chicago Washington game. Wildcats gain possession of the ball as other players run down court. February 1 found the Wildcats host to the powerful East Chicago Washington Senators. The game, which drew the largest crowd in several years, was nip and tuck all the way. The buzzer found Hammond High desperately trying to get off a shot, trailing 61 — 59. Following the Washington game, Hammond High pasted arch-rival Tech, 86 — 64. The Cats were then handed a stiff lesson in basketball in the form of a 86 — 73 beating at the hands of Gary Froebel, the nation’s number six team. The regular season ended on a cheerful and hopeful note, with LaPorte falling 73 — 54, Morton losing 71 — 68, and Chicago Carver bowing 74 — 56. Cats Win Sectional After a successful regular season, the Wildcats prepared to meet their first tournament foe, Hammond Clark. A 72 — 50 victory over the Pioneers advanced the Cats to the sectional semi-final against Whiting. The Oilers could not cope with Hammond’s style of ball and bowed 64 — 54. This win put the Wildcats in the final game with Morton. Hammond High won its second consecutive sectional title with a 75 — 60 win over the Governors. The first game of the East Chicago Regional saw Ham- mond defeating the Crown Point Bulldogs 67 — 53. Follow- ing this game, the Senators of East Chicago bumped off Gary Roosevelt to set the stage for the Regional final. The fieldhouse was jammed to capacity and television cameras were on hand for this clash. The Senators chose to play their best game of the year and whipped the Wildcats 71 — 52. Despite the disappointment, Hammond fans can look forward to next year when the entire tourney team will return. The team compiled a 9 — 0 mark against tough conference competition. The outlook for next year is good with the undefeated doubles team of Benko and Geisen re- turning. Also back for next year will be Levin and Kitchell. These boys will make up the nucleus of the squad with freshmen Mc- Hie and Kramer also figuring in the plans. Kip Thornton receives his trophy from Coach Dawson at Fall Sports ' Banquet. 66 A new era in sports at Hammond High School was begun this year with the addition of gymnastics to the athletic de- partment. Gymnastics stresses strength, flexibility, and bal- ance in its seven events — tumbling, free exercise, sidehorse, parallel bars, horizontal bars, rings and trampoline. Although the sport is young at HHS, the gymnastic team already has competed against teams from other schools. Next year Coach Nicholson’s gymnastic team will have a full schedule. nngs. Wrestling Though lacking in over-all ability, this year’s Wrestling squad featured some great individual talent. The outlook for the Hammond sectionals would seem to be somewhat dim compared with the team record, but the Cats went out onto the mats determined to end any doubts about the ability of the team, both as individuals and as a whole. The sectionals place boys against each other on the basis of over-all individual records for the season. Of a possible 12, the Cats had eight boys who placed into the afternoon matches. Though the Wildcats finished second to powerful Gavit, they made their best showing of the season. Administration Dr. Feuerbach was a very busy man this past year, but he always found time to attend various meetings. In the pictures below he is seen at a meeting of the Hammond Central Lions Club and attending a tea for the North Central Evaluation Team. Dr. Feuerbach leads a very busy life. This year he had many meetings with faculty personnel and also met with evaluators from the North Central Association. In February he traveled to Cleveland, Ohio, to speak at the convention of the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Outside of school he is active in the Woodmar Methodist Church and Hammond Central Lions Club, where he is third Vice-President in charge of club programs. At the games he can often be found in the locker room or on the bench, giving encouragement to both the coaches and the players. In spite of his hectic schedule, he still finds time to become acquainted with students whom he meets throughout the day. Superintendent and Board Dr. Joseph L. Hendrick, Superintendent of the Hammond Public Schools up to March, 1966, has conducted affairs and responsibilities that have benefited the school system. Dr . Spohn, Principal of Hammond High from 1919 to 1951 Many changes have taken place and many new faces have made their appearance in the dunes during the 1900’s. There was Mr. A. L. Spohn, who gave way to Dr. Oliver L. Rapp in the Principal’s Office. One fine April day a man from Allen County, Dr. Kenneth Feuerbach came into the office and said, “I’m the new prin- cipal here.” Then there were new faces at the Board with the coming of Dr. Hendrick. Now this June we find another but familiar person, Dr. Rapp, who took over the Superintendent’s duties when Dr. Hendrick left in March. Best wishes go to the new superintendent as he takes over the reins. Custodians Keeping our halls clean and free from debris, cleaning and straightening classrooms, even clean- ing the swimming pools and preparing them for use — these duties all fall to our custodians. Rain or shine, summer or winter, they keep our school a pleasant place in which to work and study. Frank Kouial, John Newell, and head custodian George Earl take time out to pose for our Dunes photographer. That ' s because we try always to fill higher, more responsible jobs from the ranks of our employees. And the records show — the better the em- ployee ' s education, the better he is at his job — and the better he does for himself. Inland employees continue to gain knowledge and ex- perience in special trades through formal apprenticeship programs offered in the following trades — Machinist, Patternmaking, Boilermaking, Welding, Shop Electrician, Wireman, Mason and Pipefitter. Many concentrate on certain phases of steelmaking by working in production while others work in laboratories helping to assure quality or developing new and better products for our customers. How about you? Inland Steel is steadily expanding. More and more opportunities will be open to you as our growth continues. Are you ready?
