After weeks of building class and club floats, the Homecoming parade proved a mighty success and the senior class walked off with the prize. A fantastic crowd of loyal and anxious fans filled the stands and the game started. In spite of the unexpected rainstorm, that Hammond High spirit could not be dampened and cheers filled the air as Jeanie Talliferro was crowned Homecoming Queen of 1964 at the halftime. Although the game was lost, that Purple enthusiasm carried over to the soc-hop which followed and the weekend was considered a victory in defeat. The Bonfire blazed on as the crowd grew bigger with excitement constantly mounting. Bonfire Homecoming Weekend was the first big event of the year and it climaxed the excite- ment which had been mounting within every- one from the first day of school. Hundreds of students turned out for the bonfire cele- bration to affirm their school spirit and find out if their princess candidate made it, and if their queen candidate reached the finals.

On the train to New York, these Hammond High rejects can ' t find an appropriate place for this interesting sign. That’s more like it. Juniors and seniors from our city High Schools left for Washington and New York on Tuesday, October 20. Upon arriving in Wash- ington D.C., they checked in at the Hotel Harrington, where they started their moonlit sightseeing tour. Lincoln Memorial, and the Lincoln Museum were among the places visited that night. The next two days were spent tour- ing. Included were Arlington Cemetery, the United States Bureau of Printing and Engrav- ing, the Washington Monument, the White House, Jefferson Memorial, Smithsonian Insti- tute, the Wax Museum, and the Capitol Build- ing where some students witnessed Hoover’s funeral. Friday morning was open for students to do as they pleased. Page Eight
