Page Two Students and teachers gather in the halls to discuss the upcoming regional games. Action starts around 8:10 daily at Hammond High, especially around the old grandfather clock in the main hall or by the ever changing, but always interesting showcase. Although now silent, Grand Pap doesn’t miss a trick as students nudge him while being jostled by those attempting to get to their lockers for that forgotten Lit book. It’s a tradition to meet one’s friends in the Main Hall. Hammond High’s Herald seems to be the main highlight, as the students gather to discuss its contents. Activity is created each day in the book- store; selling of school supplies and game tickets are two major functions. The clock in the main hall is a favorite meeting spot as Hammond High students gather around it to chat about the day’s events. Page Three It’s not hard to live up to the theme of the ’65 Dunes for there’s plenty of life in the classrooms, homerooms, the bookstore and the halls. One can regularly hear the slam- ming of locker doors and a ringing hello as an absentee is definitely welcomed b k to the Purple headquarters. In the midst of it all is Dr. Kenneth Feuerbach, genigd prin- cipal of these more than ' tefco-agers, who each morning slowly Wya separate ways to homeroom fot-a UuicjQ-breath and a tip from the I uW fm orr ' plftt’s happenin’ today.” The Bookstore is a popular hav JTW r that of paper, eraser or pencil. Page Four Early morning instructions from Mrs. Geneva Boyd and Mrs. Marion Dobrzynski on Jast) minute menu plans. ’Alive in 1965 Come Alive in ’65 is definitely the theme best describing life at the Wildcat Lair for the year 1964-1965. With the sounding of the 8:25 bell there’s a sudden rushing to the auditorium, up- stairs and down, to the cafeteria and the various other rooms which house the advisories, a compact counseling period and hurried presentation of announcements made available to students who by this time are already thinking about that first hour assignment. There are always a few stragglers filing in and out of the office, too. Some are there to pay locker fines and some to pick up lunches dropped off by thoughtful parents. And now, off to class! ' • ' I jwtt r ,.. J55| mm Double duty is made of the auditorium as it is used upstairs and down as homerooms and study halls. Page Five The Bonfire blazed on as the crowd grew bigger with excitement constantly mounting. Bonfire Homecoming Weekend was the first big event of the year and it climaxed the excite- ment which had been mounting within every- one from the first day of school. Hundreds of students turned out for the bonfire cele- bration to affirm their school spirit and find out if their princess candidate made it, and if their queen candidate reached the finals. Left to right are Mary Jo Shock, freshman princess, Linda Sherry, junior princess, Connie Wydra, queen finalist, Jeanie Talliferro, queen, Jan MacDonald, queen finalist, and Debbie Dorsey sophomore princess. After weeks of building class and club floats, the Homecoming parade proved a mighty success and the senior class walked off with the prize. A fantastic crowd of loyal and anxious fans filled the stands and the game started. In spite of the unexpected rainstorm, that Hammond High spirit could not be dampened and cheers filled the air as Jeanie Talliferro was crowned Homecoming Queen of 1964 at the halftime. Although the game was lost, that Purple enthusiasm carried over to the soc-hop which followed and the weekend was considered a victory in defeat. Jeanie Talliferro as she was just crowned Homecoming Queen for 1964 by association president Jeff Davidson. Page Seven On the train to New York, these Hammond High rejects can ' t find an appropriate place for this interesting sign. That’s more like it. Juniors and seniors from our city High Schools left for Washington and New York on Tuesday, October 20. Upon arriving in Wash- ington D.C., they checked in at the Hotel Harrington, where they started their moonlit sightseeing tour. Lincoln Memorial, and the Lincoln Museum were among the places visited that night. The next two days were spent tour- ing. Included were Arlington Cemetery, the United States Bureau of Printing and Engrav- ing, the Washington Monument, the White House, Jefferson Memorial, Smithsonian Insti- tute, the Wax Museum, and the Capitol Build- ing where some students witnessed Hoover’s funeral. Friday morning was open for students to do as they pleased. Page Eight Friday night the students arrived in New York City. After checking in at the New Yorker Hotel they were given free time until curfew. Saturday morning was occupied by a six hour tour of the city; included were the United Nations Building, Statue of Liberty, The Bow- ery, Chinatown, and the Empire State Building. Saturday night the students enjoyed an evening at Radio City Music Hall where they viewed the Rockettes, and “Mary Poppins.” The re- mainder of the evening they were on their own. Sunday morning a three hour boat cruise of Manhattan Island was taken. The rest of the afternoon was free. The following day our kids returned and were greeted by both family and friends. On To D. C. and N. Y.C. Students on this year’s trip witnessed the state funeral procession of the late General Douglas MacArthur. Here are some of our kids paying their tribute to the late President John F. Kennedy at his grave in Arlington Cemetery. Hammond High boys in Washington missed their daily sonic boom so decided to create their own with this cannon. Page Nine Auditorium Stand-Outs Dr. Feuerbach at Association Auditorium, swore in 1964- 1965 officers. Things started roaring for ’65 with the oath of office administered to the Associa- tion President Jeff Davidson by Dr. Kenneth Feuerbach, principal. Echoes of the presidential campaign of the nation where seen and heard on the Hammond High stage as the government classes did their part in an auditorium program prior to election. ft- jCr m IF. I fcMli 1 J Government class put on an auditorium program about the national elections. The Vocal Department put on its annual Christmas program with Seasonal Greetings Cards as the theme. The Holiday Season would not be com- plete without the Vocal Department Vespers and the excerpts for the school audience before the one-week Christmas vacation. Stage settings gave the audience live Yuletide cars. Thanks again go to Mrs. Nancy Jacobs and Miss Esther Waterbury. Band members had a chance to show off their special talents during the band ' s auditorium presentation. The sister-uglies battled with “representatives of the other Region schools for the Regional basketball trophy at a special pep-rally auditorium session. Members of the cast of “Cabbages ' ' presented by the Dramatics Club applauded their club sponsor, Miss E. Andersen, at the end of the play. Page Eleven Trying out with a song and dance number from Mary Poppins is Pat Remich. Rehearsals for the National Honor So- ciety talent show are held after school, as the students show their ability to perform. The acts range from folk singing to mod- ern dance, popular bands, and even a few teachers participate in the fun. Bill Blanford, Alan MacIntyre, Terry Levin, and Pat Martin judged the tryouts for the talent show. Talent Show Rehearsals Come First . . . Page Seventeen Oriental Splendor Prom Ken Lawson and Susan Lloyd (at the right) watch as Dave Munster helps Kathy McCain out of the car before they enter the 1965 Prom. The civic center was transformed into a fantasy of oriental splendor at the 65 Prom. Juniors worked during the months of April and May making murals, flowers, tea houses, gardens, and other decorations. Committees and subc ommittees were formed; the junior students could have been found busily working and building in the civic center on the last two days. A feeling of great accomplishment filled their minds as they finally finished their work. The Grand March ended the 1964 Prom “Moonlight Moments which was perfect with over 200 couples participating. Commencement After four wonderful years of work and play, tears and laughter, and victory and defeat, Hammond High seniors find them- selves at Baccalaureate Services and finally at Commencement Exercises. Whether or not they realize it, the crossroad in their lives has now overcome them, and they will likely all go their separate ways. In years to come, no matter where they are or how successful they are, the ’65 graduating class will never forget those great four years at Hammond High. After slaving through three or four periods, a student looks forward to his lunch hour and a good meal. The ones to thank for this good meal are the Hammond High Cafeteria ladies. They work hard all morning to prepare a good, well-balanced meal for the student body. A look at the numerous six-foot tall boys in the school confirms the success of the cafeteria ladies. For the students who do not wish to eat in the cafeteria, Virginia Laird can be found in the lower hall selling milk, pretzels and potato chips. Outsiders of course saw only the budding drivers getting valuable in- structions behind the wheel of brand new D.E. cars. Art Department Head of the Art Department, Miss Olga Schubkegel, works hard to instill an appreciation of all types of art in her students. In fact many girls took time out to vie for that award through a national test. Miss Thiel proudly announces to Nancy Smith that she is the homemaker of the year. The art of creating, follow- ing patterns and coming up with something having in- structional value and utility — that’s something all can profit by doing. A sewing technique, that Miss Thiel is instructing her class is the threading of the machine. Page Forty-four The Home-Ec. department had two added attractions this year; Mrs. Smith and a crew of young men. As the year progressed so did future cooks; perhaps even a Bobby Crocker. Wildcats of 1964, defending Western Division champions continue to apply their tough defense and a tricky offense to determined opponents. During the course of the season the purple gridders met with some untimely, as well as hard felt, injuries which weakened the team effort. Despite this hardship the Wildcats still showed an impressive season record of 7-2. At the Whiting Football O-Rama the Wildcats first faced East Chicago Washington which ended in a tie. The next- quarter they came alive to beat Whiting 7-0. The Gavit Gladiators then prepared to invade the Wildcat lare but the Big Purple was ready and won by twenty-two points 28-6. The Hammond Wildcats then did the only journeying needed all year to Whiting where they proved too slipperly to hold the Wildcats. Hammond won 32-7. Senior end Jim Michaw was in- jured in this game and played limitedly the rest of the season. A dampened Homecoming proved fatal for the Wildcats as they lost 7-12. Coming back to lead the Roosevelt Rough Riders 7-6, the Wildcats were forced to put from their own end zone. The punt was blocked and Roosevelt recovered and ended the scoring with a seven yard plunge. The final score was Hammond High 7 and East Chicago Roosevelt 12. Hammond Tech then played host to the Wildcats and could not retain them. HHS 28 - Tech 14. It was a cold and wet night when the Wildcats again took to the turf. Senior quarterback Larry Roames took the helm and shut out Gary • Tolleston 31-0. Hammond Clark attempted to beat the Wildcats but ended up on the short end 32-6. East Chicago Washington proved too powerful for the Wildcats by winning 14-7. The Big Purple soon bounced back with a win over the Morton Governors 19-6. This year the Wildcats were ready for the Bishop Noll Warriors. Strong backfield contributed to the win. Football End Jim Michaw finds it rough going as he receives a tackle issued by a Washington Senator. This heated contest ended in a 14-7 loss for the Wildcats. Page Sixty-five Basketball It seems that the Wildcats always start slow losing three of their first four games. They lost to Bishop Noll but then managed to beat Ham- mond Clark. The young Wildcats comprised of many sophomores saw the experience of defending state champs and lost a tough one to Lafayette Jeff (65-67) and then dropped another to Gary Tolleston (47-61). Head Coach Gunner Wyman shaped the boys into a team that wanted to win and in the next outing crushed Hobart (106-48). Whiting also fell (67-36). The holiday tourney saw the Cats lose to highly ranked Tipton (63-67) but once again come hack and beat Clark in the consolation game. Two Gary teams then met defeat at the hands of the Wildcats, Gary Horace Mann lost (67-36) and also Gary Emerson (85-48). Fans saw the roundballers and Coach Wyman pull a close one out of the fire in the closing moments of a over- time period by a score of (68-66) against East Chicago Roosevelt. The Terre Haute Gerstmeyer game was postponed until Feb. 19 because of a snow storm but the Wildcats ran away with the game by a score of (98-66). Gary Emerson then became the third Gary team to fall to Hammond High by a score of (73-43). Valparaiso then ended the six game winning streak of the Wildcats (62-66). Three more losses followed, first to E.C. Washirigton, second to Hammond Tech (66-70) and third to Gary Froebel (62-65). Coach Wyman and Co. then journeyed to LaPorte to topple the Sheers (51-48). Ending the regular season on a happy note the Wildcats beat Morton. February 23rd started a new season for the Wildcat Ten, where one loss can end the season. Coach Wyman impressed this fact to the boys who were ready to accept the responsibility of repre- senting their school in I.H.S.A.A. Basketball Tour- nament. In the first game Hammond High beat Lowell. The next night the Wildcats took on the Griffith Panthers, the earned the privilege of Sophomore Hiliory Hudson (11) and Terry Fischer (15) watches along with senior Jim Michaw as Dennis Dills is helped by teammate Oscar Ortegon in thrilling Sectional Championship Game which the Wildcat Cagers won. meeting and beating Hammond Clark for the third time this year. Arch-rivals Hammond High and Hammond Tech met in the championship game. After scoring 19 points officials threw Hayward Findley out of the game minutes before the half ended. Guard George Green was knocked out by Larry Jackson and did not return. Tim Michaw and Rodney Ford fouled out and senior Jim Michaw received a cut on the head but later re- turned. Reserves then were called upon by Coach Wyman and did an excellent job. Ed Robinson scored seven points in the final period. Hilliary Hudson and Dave Hendrix also did a great job. Terry Fischer did a great job in piloting the team after the other four regulars were withdrawn.
