Presents, 1958 and 1959, FABULCUS FIFTIES. How fast does ivy grow? As fast as a boy-or-girl-a few inches each year. In 1917 Hammond High School stood new, its barren red brick walls rising from a stark prairieg its student body barren of tradition. Academic Excellencep When an academic subiect is mentioned, the topic of conversation generally changes to something more social in nature-such as Saturday night, or a related field. Academics, however, include more Than the test or the term paper, they include the fun, the quips, and the honors won for work well done. Hammond High School was fortunate in 1959 in having an excellence in academic pursuits. lt was one of three Indiana high schools to receive a special First Class Commission from the State Board of Educa- tion, it was one of the 54 schools across the nation teaching a unified four-year mathematics course, it had more Merit Scholarship semi-finalists than all the other region schools combined, and finally, it boasted one ot the best classes ever graduated from Ham- mond High.
