Another Tradition, A maior social event every two weeks, from Septem- ber 19, 1958 to June 9, 1959, proved that an en- thusiastic student body and an active Association could bring social lite at Hammond High from a glowing spark to a roaring tlame. ln early October, the Association made a gamble- 1936 PROM and it paid ott in the largest, most successful Home- coming students could remember. The traditional pa- rade ot student-decorated cars and floats, and a Home- coming Queen with her court, were the results of what a high school Association can do when it has the sup- port ot the students themselves. A Challenge, A Record, Though some may remember 1937 for its over- whelming spirit, for its superiority in academic subjects, or for its pulchritude in girls, most remember it for its athletic prowess. So may 1959 be remembered for its teams. Let us, purely for the sake of illustration, look at its football record. Rated first in State for six weeks in succession, Coach Krueger's Wildcats howled their way through their first eight games boasting an average score of 34-2, to be stopped Halloween night by the Evansville Sports start on Reitz Panthers in a 13-all tie. With its spirit at a new peak, Hammond High rested on the City and North- western Conference titles and waited for the State playoff. lt never came. The boys who couldn't be stopped, were stopped, by one half of a yellow report card bearing the rudely scratched words, WILL PLAY. Had we drawn the right half, perhaps we would have taken State, perhaps not. That is part of the rec- ord, written in mud, and sweat, and sometimes tears. page 42. JULES PAPAIS, 1937
