The increase of required sub- jects crowded out a lot of the better English student who would like to take journalism . . . also eliminated from the staff those journalism students who had completed their training for a staff position . . . to meet this emergency they set up a dual staff system known as the Purple and White staffs . . .one staff to publish alternate issues . . . The Purple staff was made up of those students having one or more year's experience . . . Delores Benne was editor of the Purple Staff . . . The White staff or training staff, was made up primarily of juniors and sophomores, headed by Jackie Abbott . . . in spite of this careful planning, required subjects will make it necessary to choose next fall's staff mainly from the students who complete their course in journalism this June . . . Special issues published throughout the year with the aid of the school print shop and their new Miehle Vertical Press were the Christmas edition in red and green, the Semi- Finals extra, the Temulac Times C April Fool issuej, the Silver Anniversary Association issue and the special Graduation issue . . . The Hammond High chapter of the Quill and Scroll was publicized as was the Herald in the March-April issue of the Quill and Scroll magazine, which is the official publication for the International Honor Society of High School Journalists, which was written by Mr. A. T. Bolt, supervisor of the Herald, explained the workings of the dual staff system . . . The picture of the Purple staff which illustrated the article was taken by Gerald Rush, Herald and Dunes student photographer . . . Because of the high cost of printing in commercial shops the lock up and press work of the paper was done in the Hammond schools' print shop under the supervision of Mr. A. J. Schultz, printing instructor . . . It was necessary to send the linotype composition and make-up of the paper to commercial shops because the lino- type machine which is on order for the Schools' print shop had not yet arrived . . . The Herald also pioneered in conjunction with the Association in the launching of a possible activity ticket program . . . This plan would insure every student in school a copy of the school paper every week and would eliminate a necessity for costly subscription campaigns which break into the school days during the opening weeks of the fall semester . . . Shouldnit work any hardships on the student body by requiring each student in the school to pay for the paper by this plan . . . this plan would give the business staff a definite financial guarantee which would make it possible to start publishing the paper weekly beginning with the first week of school each fall . . . A versatile rockribbed line plus a smashing backfield proved too much for the Purple as they succumbed 16-13. A safety, tallied when a blocked punt was recovered by a Washington lineman in the Senator end zone, gave the Cats a 2-O victory over the previously undefeated Twin Citians. Purple backs, who couldnit do anything right, failed to go for touchdowns several times when the path was clear. South Bend Washington, future eastern NIHSC champion, tumbled before a battling squad 7-0 at H. H. S. field for its first defeat of the season. Bob Babcock, scored on a reverse play in the opening minutes that sent him 15 yards to pay dirt.. Then it settled down to a battle of lines. The upset win gave the Cats state recognition and some down-state writers picked the Purple as the state's No. 2 eleven behind invincible East Chicago Roose- velt. Hammond High muffed chance after chance as it fought to a scoreless deadlock with the third unde- feated team it met in as many starts, Whiting, at the Oiler field. The Cats penetrated the Whiting 30 yard line four times reaching the eight in the first period, but couldn't push across a tally. Center Bob Hunt and Left Guard Fred Donnersberger starred in the line while Wally Bogielski and Art Mallehan paced the attack. Whiting had possession of the ball on the H. H. S. 24, the closest they came to a touchdown all night, when the game ended. TECH ...,......r..........,..,,,.......,,,,,,,....... - .... 6 E. C. ROOSEVELT .,,.,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,.. 1 6 E. C. Snapping back after the intermission, however, the Purple crew sent Art Mallehan across twice to wrap up a 13-7 verdict. Once-beaten Benton Harbor, Michigan, High eleven became the Wildcat's second inter-sectional victim, 22-7, in a game played in the land of lakes and apples. The Purple overcame a 7-6 deficit at the end of the first quarter to roar to victory on two touchdowns by Bogielski and safeties by Bob Hunt and Harold Krause, who tackled Benton Harbor ball carriers in the end zone. Art Mallehan scored his third straight touchdown, including the two he tallied in the Clark game, in the first period. A touchdown pass in the last minute of play gave Evansville Reitz a 6-O win over the Cats in the slush of the Panther Bowl in Evansville. Rain, which had fallen for two days and stopped just before gametime, gave the gridiron the appearance of a swimming pool with dabs of clay sticking up here and there. The Wildcats were housed at the famous French Lick Springs, Hotel before and after the intersectional tilt. Ending the season in a blaze of glory on semi- illuminated Gleason field, the Catsvbroke forth with the biggest scoring splurge since their opener to hu ' - iate Gary Lew Wallace, 25-7, in an ' a-W n division playoff game. Tom Tsatsas s atch- ing a pass from W7 alter Bogielski, B c tallied' two six-pointers, and Chuck Fer a touch- down pass to Dan Wisniewski d the season with a 6-2-1 record. The squad after trouncing Whit- ing 15-71, lost the services of Ronald Molen, the team's undisputed leader, for the next four events. In the season's second meet the H. H. S. harriers, coached by John Whitey Wonsowitz, placed second behind Tech and ahead of Clark in the city meet, and then dropped dual meets to Hobart and Horace Mann and also ranked last in the Gary Triangular. Bouncing back after these four consecutive defeats the Purple's thinly clads, paced by Molen, were the upset winners of the Hobart Invitational Cross Coun- try Seventh Annual Meet, the second largest cross coun- try event held in the state. 1947 Cross Country varsity schedule and results: After winning the Invitational, Hammond ranked fourth in the Hobart State Sectional and seventh in the South Bend Conference. Molen finished second in the conference and twelfth at the State Meet in Indian- apolis. Churning the cinders for the varsity squad were Ronald Molen, Sr., john Adams, So., Tom Foreman, Sr., Claude jones, Sr., Cecil Harper, jr., Henry Eggers, So., james Fowler, Sr., and Gerald Graves, Jr. According to Coach Wonsowitz the possibilities for next year are much brighter. The men who will give the '48 team balance are john Adams, Henry Eggers, Cecil Harper, Edgar Menning, Gerald Graves and Rich- ard Tinkham. 1947 Cross Country freshman-sophomore schedule Date Place Team Sept. The count this time was 42-24. x Leading all the way, the -Wildcats swam off with a 46-20 victory over the Whiting Oilers. The Purple took the measure of a weak La Porte squad, with six lirsts and a clean sweep in both medley and free style relays. The Wildcats, playing host, gained another one-sided victory as they defeated the Bears of South Bend Central 46-20. Probably the toughest dual meet of the season was the loss to Horace Mann, 37-29. H. H. S. rebounded with a 47-19 win over Thornton Fractional. It was even more one-sided than their first clash and was the Cats' fifth triumph in six meets. The Solons were next to feel defeat in the hands of the Wildcats, 46-20, as they lost five of eight events. Overcoming a first period deficit the Purple tankers clipped Whiting 41-25. The Papemen marked up a score two times as great, 44-22, at South Bend Central for win number 8. Hammond's splashers, former victims, captured their ninth victory by downing Horace Mann 40-26. The Wildcats overwhelmed East Chicago Washington 46-20 to end a very successful season with ten wins and one loss. Horace Mann edged the Cats, defending champions, to take the N. I. H. S. C. swimming meet, 43-55. Six other schools competed. Larry Smith came within one second of tying the record in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1.09.9. Tom Harrigan, Cat freestroker, set a new H. H. S. time with a 57.4. Also break- ing a record was the H. H. S. medley relay team ofLarry Smith, Allan Fox and Bill Cohoon whose time was 1.50.5. Last but not least was Fred Di Paoli who snatched the conference diving crown. Outstanding splashers of '48 were Tom Harrigan, Perin Schutz, Larry Smith and Fred Di Paoli. Though the team next season will be weak in breast stroke and relay material, the following varsity men will return: jones, back stroke, Di Paoli, diving, Fox, breast stroke, Pepperdine, Spearman and Meggers, free style, stated Coach Jula Papais. - Picture I Medley Team Broke Twelve Year Old H. Nick Morfas, operating at the forward spot, was high scorer with 13 points. A Playing its best game of 1947 the Wildcats completely overwhelmed Hammond Tech's Tigers, 68-44. This was also the first time during the '47 season that a fourth quarter rally was not needed for victory. High scorers were Dave Anderson who bagged 18 points and Wally Bogielski who racked up 12. Losing 50-36 to a snappy Fort Wayne Central quintet, Hammond High faltered when Dave Anderson left during the third quarter because of injury. The sudden turn of events seemed to knock the spirit out of the Cats' drives and the tenacity from its defense as the Tigers scored 21 points in the fourth period. Hammond High edged Clark 52-50, before a Civic Center crowd that watched in awe as the Cats led eight times before the last minute of play, Clark pulled ahead five times and the score was tied on seven occasions. Babcock led H. H. S. scoring with 18 points, but Neidow chipped in with an even dozen. Bob Babcock, who scored 13 points, netted the needed tally as the Wildcats edged out Tolleston 35-34 in a thriller at Gary Memorial. During the clash of zone defenses, many fans realized that when the Purple hoopsters decided .to take advantage of their opportunities they would be a team to be reckoned with. Until that time they would be an average team. Hammond High, jinxed by teams bearing the surname of Central, was downed by a mighty Muncie Central quint, 35-30, at the huge Muncie Fieldhouse. Nick Morfas, with 10 points, paced the Cats. Sparked by Al Schultz, starting his first game at guard, the Cat hoopsters whipped the Maroons from Benton Harbor 52-41. Superior playing plus brilliant teamwork made victory possible. The Valparaiso game was extremely lopsided, as the King quintet annihilated the Vikings 52-23. Nick Morfas tallied 11 points for Purple high-point honors. In a whirlwind fourth quarter, featuring a Slicer press defense and a barrage of field goals, Hammond High edged out previously undefeated LaPorte 48-47. Pivot man, Nick Morfas connected for 17 points to lead Pur- ple scoring. Horace Mann was downed 48-43 by the balanced efforts of the Purple quintet. Dave Anderson led in the point- making department with fifteen points, followed by Dick Neidow with 12. Bob Babcock and Nick Mor- fas tallied nine and eight points respectively. A The Cats, engineering a scoring spree, took the wind out of the Golden Tornados by routing them 52-32 at the Civic Center. Bob Babcock and Al Schultz, with 13 and 11 points respectively, sparked the King quintet. Long shots, by both Hammond and Emerson, highlighted the game. Invading the home stronghold of the Riders the Wildcats, in a fourth quarter rally, added another to their string of victories by ripping E. C. Roosevelt 51-37. Dave Anderson and Bob Babcock, scoring 13 and 12 points. respectively led Purple point-makers. Gaining momentum as the season progressed, the Wildcats looked very impressive as they romped to their seventh consecutive win by routing Lew Wallace 55-33 at the Civic Center. Dave Anderson paced Hammond High with 12 points. Bob Babcock bagged 10 and Steve Riebe connected for 9. In the game of the year, Hammond Wildcats' captured their eighth successive victory by defeating East Chicago Washington 47-32 before approximately 5,200 roundball enthusiasts at the Civic Center. Dick Neidow copped scoring honors with 12 points. Hammond High nailed down at least a tie for the Western Division title as it racked up its ninth in a row by clipping Hammond Tech 41-29. Cautious ball handling and a press by Coach Lou Birket's proteges almost defeated the Cats but Hammond's size and domination of the backboards were the deciding factors. Hammond High again displayed its erratic nature prevelant at the opening of the season as the Pioneer squad downed the Wildcats 55-41 in a non-conference game. Expert ball hawking and sharp shooting by the Robertsdale hoopsters ended the Wildcats' nine game winning streak. Leading Purple scorer was Nick Morfas with 11. Pagr N.'11t'ty-four Friday, the thirteenth, spelled both good and bad luck to the Kingmen as they bowed to Gary Froebel 59-44 but backed into an undisputed Western Division championship. Nick Morfas, only consistant Cat scorer, slightly softened the blow by connecting for 16 points. The Wildcats came to life after tumbling to two successive defeats to whip Whiting 51-39 in their final regular season game. Dave Anderson, Purple pivot man, outclassed and outscored Whiting's ponderous Hank Mazul by collecting 18 points to the 14 for the Oiler ace. Anderson was aided by Bob Babcock who tallied 14 points. zournamenld Hammond High fought off desperate bids by underdogs Grifiith and Lowell quintets to take both teams, 48-43. and 39-35, respectively, in its initial sectional starts. The Anderson-Babcock-Morfas trio proved too much Tiger mainspring, was held to 9 points while points. In the sectional finale, East Chicago Washington also and stellar guarding of Randy Balas, Senator Dave Anderson, 51-47 to forced to Hammond High Anderson for Tech, 37-23, in the tourney semi-final. Dale Vieau, Dave Anderson topped Hammond scoring by netting 13 felt the sting of defeat 36-34. Wildcat backboard control jumping-jack, by Nick Morfas were the deciding factors. collector of 27 points, paced the Cat cagers as they downed a sharp-shooting Emerson quintet win the regional opener. The Wildcats, after losing leads of eight, six, and four points were come from behind in the closing minute to avoid defeat. overcame Michigan City, 48-40 to capture its fifth regional and enter the Sweet Sixteen. Dave and Bob Babcock led Purple scoring with 11 points each. Hammond High, although rallying to close a 32-16 deficit to 41-39 in the final minute lost to a classy. Lafayette Jefferson quintet 44-39 before 9,000 screaming fans at Purdue fieldhouse. Driving hookshot artist, Ernie Hall, rang up 17 points to lead jeff scoring while Dave Anderson, Cat pivotman, swished the nets for 15 points. Hoosier pen jockeys agree that the frigid first half for the Purple hoopsters gave the victory to the Bucking Broncos, who won the state championship the next week at Indianapolis. Angelo Angelopolous of the Indianapolis News summarized the Jeff-Hammond clash with this comment: The Wildcats, obviously a rugged powerhouse, had the game in their hand much of the time-if they could have hit. They were the jumpingest lot--Bob Babcock, Dave Anderson, and Nick Morfas, especially- one could expect of high school teams. They outrebounded Jeff, 43-29, but they waited a minute too long to find the range. . BASKETBALL SUMMARY Hgmmond High School ............ se s. B. Tech is - Clar t more than their match in Hammond as they were trounced 83 to 59 to 19 in the city meet. A ttian : f Q against Hobart and East Chicago Roosevelt ended in a lopsided victory with Hammond scoring 86 poin 55 and East Chicago Roosevelt 20. The Wildca 9 r eled to Notre Dame to meet and defeat Elkhart, Mishawaka and LaPorte in a four-way mee kh was bested 62M to 45m, with the other contenders far behind. A 5 Q Fe The Ca rrner division champs, relinquished the Western Conference title when they were nosed out by Gary roebeli 56 to 52. Eleven other schools competed. points. A Ou! .boot The outdoor season started off on the wrong foot when the Wildcat thinlies were edged by the Flying Panthers from Gary Roosevelt 51 to 45 in a triangular meet on the Purple oval. Froebel followed. close with 42 Hammond changed its pace as it played host to Hobart with a crushing 71M to 37M win. On April 24 the Wildcats won the Roosevelt Relays for the seventh consecutive year. The Purple tracksters trounced 15 other schools with a total of 89M points, the highest number ever scored in this meet. Routed by a score of 90 to 19, East Chicago Roosevelt was probably the easiest opponent of the season to face Hammond. The first day of May was quite a day as the Wildcats rolled over Gary Froebel 5526 to 45M to capture their sev- enth Western division crown. Two marks were erased by Hammond as jim Harper high jumped 6' 2 and the 880 relay team composed of Bob Thomas, Louis Tebedo, Tom Shaw, and Walter Bogielski cov- ered the distance in 1:35.5. Hammond High racked up 54 points at Mishawaka to cop its fifth straight NIHSC track and field cham- pionship. Gary Eroebel and Lew Wallace tallied 295 points apiece to tie for second as the Western division ran off with eleven of thirteen blue ribbons. Ronnie Molen turned in a record-breaking mile performance, taking the lead on the back stretch of the final lap to win by 20 yards. jim Harper won the high jump at 5' HM and Ernie Blackburn put the shot 51' BM besides placing second in the high jump. The Wildcats qualified nine men and both relay teams for the state meet as they swept the East Chicago sectional breaking four records and tying another in the process. They bagged 67 points to 27 for second place Tech. Hammond set new conference times when Ronnie Molen ran a 4233.9 mile, Ernie Blackburn tossed the shot 52' 10252 Jim Harper leaped 5' 11 and the 880 relay team broke the record with a 1133.4 Walter Bogielski tied the 100 yard dash with a 10 second effort. faaehall Squad 'Showed Spirit p This year despite the drawback of lack of practice because of poor weather conditions, the Purple nine, under the mentorship of Coach Pat Patterson, won ten of eighteen games. Seniors pacing the team included: J. Neidow, Babcock, Dickinson, Ogren, D. Neidow, Orr, Clark, Pickford, Malone, Norton, Kreiger, and Hunt.
