lll III HE birth of the modern symphony orchestra occurred with the emersion of the world from the dark ages. At first small ensem- bles were used in conjunc- tion with church plays, dramatized from the Bible. This gradually grew with the addition and development ot new instruments, until at present our orchestras num- ber over lOO pieces. Dedication N appreciation of the na- tional recognition brought this school by its orchestra and bands, and the immeasurable good resulting from such train- ing, we sincerely dedicate this book to Mr. Adam P. Lesinsky. TRINCED instruments, which apparently origi- nated in ancient Egypt, were used for religious services and entertainment. Ade- velopment, the lyre, was a -romantic source of inspira- tion in Greece, and was also used in Rome. Other odd forms were also prevalent during these periods.
