Trustee Rev. Pennington On Gctober 15, 1969, a nation-wide phenomenon called lVloratorium occurred. The demonstration was directed Toward the Vietnam War, not against the Presi- dent or his war policy, but rather, demonstrating for peace. In this light the Hamline Community suspended classes on that day to hold their Day of Concern for International Peace. Many different voices were heard throughout the day including those of Senator Walter Nlondale, Representa- tive Donald Fraser and Attorney General Douglas Head. More specifically, Fraser outlined a three-stage plan for disengagement from Vietnam. He advocated a doubling of American non-military aid abroad and Head urged patience regarding the war. Mondale commented that, The United States is the victim of a fierce sense of pride which has made us lose sight of the limits of our capaci- ties. Earlier in the day three Hamline Trustees, James C. Otis, Rev. Chester Pennington and George Peterson gave a panel discussion on Peace Perspectives: The Law, The Church, The Press. Students involved themselves in the day by attending lectures, participating in discussion groups, a tea and rice luncheon and expressing themselves through the media of paint on the walls of Goheen. The day was thus characterized by peaceful and meaningful interaction on the Hamline campus. All who participated came away with a clearer understanding of the issues involved and a sense of pride in the constructive way in which the members of the Hamline Community expressed their views on this grave national issue.
