For his many years of dedication to Hamline University as head
basketball coach, the 1964 Liner staff would like to dedicate the
1964 Liner to Joe Hutton. For the past thirty three years Ham-
line has been privileged to have one of the finest coaches in or-
ganized collegiate athletics as basketball coach. The tremendous
records set by his basketball teams are confirmation of his leader-
ship ability. It is no wonder that he ranks among the top five
coaches for both large and small colleges with the fantastic record
of 574 wins as opposed to 176 losses. In the Minnesota Intercol-
legiate Athletic Conference, his record is 337 wins to only 68 losses.
Hutton's teams have won or tied for 19 conference championships,
and Hamline under Hutton was the first college to win three na-
tional small college championships, in 1942, 1949, and 1951, a
record tied in 1959 by Tennessee A. and I. The record for the most
appearances in the small college championship play-offs is also held
by Hutton with 12 appearances and a win-loss record of 36-10.
Joe Hutton holds the distinction of being the first coach to be
selected to the Helms Foundation Hall of Basketball Immortals.
Despite his great past record, Coach Hutton remains a modest,
mild-mannered gentleman which has greatly endeared him to the
hearts of Hamline students and faculty members. Joe Hutton will
be greatly missed on the Hamline campus upon his retirement after
basketball season next year.
