It was they who started us on the long climb to the day when we would re- ceive our diplomas. It was they who were behind us constantly through the years urging us onward toward our goal. Their praise of our successes and encouragement of our failures have helped us reach the long desired goal. We are proud to dedi- cate this bookto our dearest friends, who have done so much for us throughout the years to help us prepare ourselves for whatever the future may hold for us. XVilson jack Murphy if , FCJOTBA For the second consecutive year the Red Rams have been one of the top teams in their conference. Although not boasting as many wins this year as they did last, the Red Rams had a very successful season under the coaching of I. V. Pruitt and Gene Winfree. In the first game of the season the Rams played a very hard ball game to tie the Braves of Cheraw 6-6. Carroll and Samuels were the big guns for Hamlet. The touch- down came on a 15 yard pass from Samuels to Carroll. The highly regarded Pirates of Lumberton came to Hamlet to collect a sure win over the Rams. The Rams, not to be denied a victory, fought hard, and as the final whistle blew, the score read Ham- let 25, Lumberton 0. Then came the White- ville game, which turned out to be a de- fensive battle with the line showing up the backfield. Many times the Whiteville ball carriers were stopped for no gain by such boys as Gene Hennecy, Donald Wilson, Arthur McDuffie, Jimmy Suggs, Martin Hatcher, and Roy Peele. The game ended in a 0-0 tie. Determined to get back on the winning column, the Rams romped the Scots of Laurinburg by a score of 25-0 with jerry Sims, Ray Samuels, 'Clyde Kirkley, and Tommy Hendricks racking up the points. Our next visitors were the lads from Fairmont. Fairmont had neither been de- feated nor scored on until this game. Ham- let licked them by a score of 6-0. The score came on a 30 yard run by Garnet Burns after picking up a blocked kick. Then came the first defeat of the Rams. They went to Wadesboro to be defeated by a score of 21-14. Following the defeat the Rams were defeated by Rockingham 30-6. Although the score was one sided, the Hamlet lads played a very hard game. Being tired of defeats and ties, the team worked very hard in practice for the next game with Sanford, who at that time had not tasted a defeat. The Rams played what was probably the best game of their ,52 campaign. The game ended with Hamlet an top 7-0. No one player could be singled out as being outstanding. It was a team LL 47 RESUME victory. The homecoming game was lost to Tabor City 19-14. The final game was won by the Rams from Clinton 34-13. Again this was an outstanding team victory. We would like to list the names of the boys, who gave the Hamlet football team this good record. They are as follows: Clarke Carroll, Donald Wilson, Iimmy Suggs, Gene Hennecy, Buck Mitchum, Charlie McGilvary, Martin Hatcher, Vide Kirkley, Clyde Kirkley, Arthur McDuffie, .Iimmy Montgomery, Roy Peele, Bruce King, Herndon Thompson, Ronald Parker, Tommy Hendricks, Ray Samuels, jack Murphy, jerry Sims, Larry Edwards, Garnet Burns, Billy Averitt, Isley Barnes, johnny Hicks, Bobby Rea, Doug Haynes, Charles McKeithan, John Land, and joe Martin. A nice thick envelope addressed to Miss Lenna McEwen, Nurse, James Walker Memorial Hospital. Upon opening it I found the invitation to the wed- ding of old classmates, Beverly Gibson and Douglas Walton, Joyce Breeze and Donald Wilson. It was to be June 2, 1963. I drove the ambulance expertly along Hamlet Avenue and drew up in front of the First Baptist Church. A big sign proclaimed: Rev. Charles McKee. Cars were parked everywhere, and for the first time in my life I saw dozens of parked carsv without people in them. QOh, yea! brought the ambulance along, because my motto is-Be Pre- pare . A tall handsome usher led me down thet aisle. He grinned, and I realized it was Ike Gainey, who had gained a few feet. Alex Morrison, leading Broadway actor, was sitting next to me. He informed me that he had finally landed a father part in a play. He seemed quite thrilled. IoAnn Cox is his bookkeeper. Shirley Matheson, he told me, had married a leading Rockingham citizen named Sonny. Bobby Peele had a huge dancing part in an MGM musical called c'The World Owes Me A Livingv written by Mr. Bobby Williams, who said, and I quote: It was nothing. Miss Newton told me all about itf, Martha Sue Woodall, home from the conservatory, began the wed- ding march on the organ. As the bridesmaids passed, I noticed that Dorcas Nelson and Catherine Newton, All-Americans, were signing autographs. Rev. McKee looked stunning in his green checked zoot suit, and Robert Bishop, best man, brought his fabulous race horse, Blue Flame, along since he could not be without him for one minute or his other horse, Extinguisher, would put out thet Flame. The wedding was finished in due time, and all the guests went to the reception. Dr. Andy Hemphill, Ir. and his wife Bonnie Carnes were discussing a delicate brain operation on some poor student, who got left behind. I think it was Sonny Bennett. Alex Morrison introduced me to a very distinguished man, and imagine my surprise upon learning that it was Clarke Carroll, a practicing lawyer. He was now deep in a case defending Dr. Martin Hatcher, who had been playing the horses. Chris Cosmas finally got a part in a Broadway play, too. She is the maid who udunnitv. Pete Hornaday is a football coach at State. The basketball team made a splendid showing this year. Melrose Grant is now wearing spectacles which look like a pair of those discarded by Miss Newton, his previous history teacher. Upon questioning Alex, I learned that he is a professor of U. S. History. Scott Williams is in the engraving business-and I don,t mean wed- ding invitations, either. Bobbie Sutton with her efficient, world-wide famous stenographer, Shirley Baucom was telling Grey Singletary, Nellie Richardson, and Jeanette Gibson about her talk with Queen Elizabeth and the many horrors of the dungeons in thet palace. CLASS PROPHECY Arthur McDuffie is the most eligible bachelor in town. Iamie McLean can never forget the plumbing business. Here is part of his conversation with the newly-Weds: And if you ever have a leaky faucet, a dripping water tank, or a busted pipe, just call mein Claudette Epting was smiling at Ioyce, and through her tear filled eyes she said: Have a nice time, Cold Dust Twin. 1,11 see you in F loridaf' Gerry McDuffie was surrounded by her three charming daughters and her five dachshunds. Johnnie Carter, star obituary re- porter of the New York Times, came along with Detective Sammy Weatherly in hopes of finding column news. Winnie Mitchum got tired of yelling above the roar of the trains, so she moved to Rockingham and found a fresh new field of SWEET VIOLETS! Bobby Hutchens still tells peculiar stories about his car. Miss Flynt goes along behind him and corrects his English. Tat Howell got tired of being a business manager and married Jack Murphy, a sports writer. Roy Peele is taking orders for French imported convertibles. He fol- lowed his French teacher, Miss Pons over there and decided to stay. She slipped back to America. Doris Lassiter finished her nurse,s train- ing at Mercy and married one of her wealthy patients. Bobby Stephens invented a mix and fix your ownv machine. He owns Birmingham's now. Patty Duke and Shirley Quick are discussing their Nobel prize winning stories. The respective titles were Love, Mystery, and Ad- venture, and 'Tm out for goodf, Iack Brigman and Filbert Robertson are wealthy tycoons. Charles and David Williams opened up a grocery business, and it ran Colonial Stores out of business. I think it,s the C 81 D We Cot It All firm. Peggy Io Blakely shocked the nation by retiring from her very active life of doin gnothing. She lives next door to Margie Warr Sowell. Martha Robinson keeps the books for Saks Fifth Avenue. Ella Rea Hudson has been writing prize winning essays. Mary Moon and Betty Jean Haynes are now head librarians at Hamlet High. Caroline Chavis is doing re- search work on What makes teachers tickf, Ernest and Donald Peele bought the school ten new buses. Barbara Cox walks around telling us what the chemical compounds of things are. Peggy Hendley is assistant manager to the manager of the Hamlet Theater. Dot Billingsley drives a truck. Myra Cochran writes children,s stories. Mary Belle Brigman married a Vanderbilt . . . and built herself a home in Florida. Billy Parker resides in an office and gets to prop his feet up. Mary Ramey, dietitian at Hamlet Hospital, was comparing professional notes with Flora Robinson, who is writing a book entitled Daily Nutritionf, Bennie Lou Rogers became extremely wealthy and married her chauffer. An emergency call came for Dr. Martin Hatcher, and when he came back, he announced that the former IoAnn McIver had a 736 pound girl. My feet are killing me. fm going to beat a hasty retreat before anything else happens. I think Mrs. Phifer had the same idea, because as I walked out thet church door, she gave her friendly smile. Whewl What a relief to be back in my ambulance and heading for home. There she is. james 'Walker Memorial. And there is my house . . . McEwen Dormi- tory. Head Nurses.
